I'm going to grab me a ps3 in the next few days. I can't find a 60 without going online and the 60's are all currently being price gouged. I understand the 80's only have software emulation of the ps2 games, but its getting better ever release. My question is this: Is there a loss of quality by loosing the Emotion engine chip?
Is the Emotion Engine really necessary? I've read that there have been updates available for download that have really improved the backward compatibility, as well as providing DVD up-conversion for watching movies.
Anyone else have any input?
Chimaera 12-26-2007, 08:32 PM I don't know, I'd probably wait for a 60gigabyte when the price drops back down a tad after this Christmas rush.

The 60GB PS3's have been discontinued.

but they're not making more, right? So supplies will be more limited, and price will stay inflated.
Personally, I think it's a really crappy thing for Sony to do, but whatever. Make systems that claim to be something, and then make it so it only happens sometimes, and only if you pay even more money.

i'm talking about getting one on ebay.
they were going for 415 or so pre-christmas. That isn't bad. I'd pay a bit more for a 60 compared with a 399 40gb.

Instead of 97% PS2 games being BC (20/60GB), you get roughly 72% PS2 games being BC (80GB)
quality more or less is the same (the ones that work), think now it can upscale to make it look better in some cases

Awesome, thanks. Seems like all the games I would be playing on it have no issues. Seems perfectly fine for me to get the 80gb. Thanks!
bigred50 12-27-2007, 08:37 AM I've got the 40gb model... backward compatibilty was not really an issue for me - and not sure why its an issue for anyone. If you have PS2 games I'd assume you have a PS2 system? Just keep it plugged in as well... although I havent even thought about my PS2 in the 3 months I've had my PS3.
Sure it would be easier I guess if the PS3 would play PS2 dics but I couldnt give a damn.
BikeGiftingMan 12-27-2007, 10:10 AM my ps2 broke, so yesh.
whst kind of stuff can go on that HD, anyway?
I just picked up the 80gb. What a huge ass system! Can't wait to tear into it tonight. I'm using the RCA cables though because my HDMI are on the way. Hope it will look alright.
Chimaera 12-27-2007, 02:40 PM when i thought about getting a ps3,I would need a ps2 compatible one because I never bought a ps2. I kinda skipped that one and played PC games for a while.
The PS3 lacks titles right now, so ps2 games would've been one of the major selling points. God of War 2 mostly.

Do you mean the 80GB software emulation upscales games, where the 60GB hardware doesn't?

Naw, there was an update recently that allowed for all PS2 compatible models to upscale PS2 games, not just specific ones.
I believe the 20,60, and 80 gb all do it. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I know my 60gb upscales . :yo:

Honestly, I felt the exact same way too.
But the 60GB version also has 4 USB ports versus only 2 for the 40GB version. If you're playing a game like Rock Band, that does make a difference. You'd have to have a USB hub to plug in all instruments.
I was able to get a 60GB PS3 for $450 with 2 controllers, Resistance, Assassin's, and Ghost Recon, all without tax or shipping costs. Considering it was only 25 bucks more than the Dell Deal(40GB, Ratchet and Clank, HDMI cable, free shipping), I hopped on that mad quick.
I never had a PS2, but I'm really looking forward to playing the God of War and Metal Gear series, in anticipation for their sequels.
Plus, for some people, they could sell their PS2 for about 100 bucks or more, which is basically the cost difference between the 40GB and 60GB version.

Oh I see. I never thought of Ebay. I lucked out on Craigslist. I just don't like paying shipping and handling or service charges.
