OT: The outdoor game?

I plan to make a day out of watching it, perhaps traveling up there and getting some scalped tix (probably not).
What's everyone else think of this one? Nationally televised, 78K people.

I'm going to be watching.

The best part about the game is it is the second half of a home and home between the two teams so hopefully it should be an intense game.

I'll definitely be watching. I'm sort of hoping it snows though because it just sort of makes it more like some Canadian pond hockey, though not in Canadia of course.

You don't want lake effect snow though. That would end up cancelling the game.

I also think ratings would soar if Doc and Chico were the color guys. Everyone would get to hear the glorious voices we hear every game.
I love them.

I'll take Doc but forget about Chico, he's annoying.

I'm so excited for this game.

Not sure if it will be huge for the sport. When they did this in Edmonton back in 2003, it didn't really increase attendance or TV ratings around the league after the event.

I don't plan on watching it, especially between two teams that I really don't care about.

Want to know the perfect recipe for me not watching a game?

1. Take my two least favorite teams in the whole league
2. Put them on national television so the announcers will be sure to orally ******* them the whole game
3. Put the game on at the same time as my favorite team
4. Have my college playing their first New Years Day bowl in a decade, also at the same time.

Perfect recipe here for my tv to be viewing elsewhere.

I don't even remember it being on TV last time....was it?

I think it'll atleast make a splash if an American football stadium is filled for hockey. Maybe not HUGE for the sport, but there will be an impact.

It was on TV nationally here in Canada and it was on Center Ice.

That game wasn't on TV in the states. This games isn't going to cause any dramatic increase but it is a better showcase for the league than the All-Star Game because this will feature actual hockey.

I dunno, I think this game could give the bowls that day a run for their money ratings wise.

I'm a college football fan, but I'll definitely be watching this game instead. There's plenty of meaningless bowl games to watch.

Outdoor hockey games don't happen that often and it will be the first one I've ever actually seen since none of the others have ever been televised.

Ratings for the bowl games will probably only consist of fans of the teams playing anyway (since the national championship is the only one that really matters - and actually, this season even that game will be a joke thanks to the BCS), whereas most hockey fans will probably have at least some interest in this game.

Okay, but unless you have it on network television, there's no point in saying that it was on in the US! And that's a good attitude you have there. As a hockey fan you should want to see this game!

I don't care who was in the game, it's still fun to watch! Buffalo is hot right now and the Penguins are in our division.

They had to have Crosby in the game in order to even remotely promote this game. Everyone knows Sidney Crosby, even if you aren't a hockey fan!

Everyone knows Sidney Crosby, even if you aren't a hockey fan!
I don't think that's true.
Wayne Gretzky transcended hockey (like Michael Jordan transcended basketball¹)...I think he is the only person whose name you can say without having to add "...the hockey player." Maybe Mario Lemieux was as well known to the non-hockey fan.
}:-(>
Crosby may be widely known outside of hockey circles in areas where where hockey is heavily publicized (i.e. - a Torontonian or Bostonian who does not follow the sport is probably familiar with his name and its association with the NHL through simple repetition of his name during the local news sports broadcast²: someone tuning in for the Celtics score will hear his name if he or she doesn't switch channels between time the NBA highlights are given and the NHL coverage is shown); whereas someone tuning in to the local New Orleans station for info on the Saints might not get that Crosby saturation - I don't know how much the NHL is discussed in that particular sports market.
I don't think I've seen two seconds of hockley coverage on Telemundo (although they'll show a soccer match between Costa Rica and Portugal played in Portugal).

1) To his credit, Gretzky never made a movie with Bugs Bunny
2) Note I didn't say "ESPN", who so heavily segregate their hockey content - maybe half a minute's worth crammed in the middle of NBA Slam Dunks and College football that they hardly have time to mention Crosby anymore.

Down here in Atlanta, I know a few non-hockey fans that know the basics on Crosby, nothing major, but he is known by the redneck football fanatics.

I don't care about it either. It's just the same exact game of hockey that we all know and love, but it's being played outdoors. That's all.

The novelty wears off after about 30 seconds of watching it on television.

Some people pretend that they are really "into it" in order to try to somehow imply that they are bigger hockey fans than most. It's kind of like some people being forced to say they actually liked the godawful movie Slapshot, as if admitting you don't like it means that you're not a "true" hockey fan.

I appreciate your honesty in comming right out and saying it and then watching some of the fanboys attack you for your personal opinion on the insignificance of an outdoor NHL hockey game.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres, at an outdoor game at Ralph Wilson Stadium....yawn

I would have watched the game if it was just a regular, indoor game.

I never saw the Oilers-Canadiens game in 2003. I thought ESPN would carry the Canadian feed live. If was shown on ESPN a week later, no one ever told me. Maybe it was on ESPN Classic, which I didn't get at the time.

The Weather Channel is showing a high of 32° F (0° C) on New Year's Day, and AccuWeather is calling for 31° F, which is either 0° or -1° C.

I would love if the Devils could play the Rangers in one of these in the future at Giant Stadium or Yankee Stadium. There has been talk of a Rangers-Islanders outdoor game at Yankee Stadium, but I think the Devils would be a better choice. With the Devils' participation, the game could be held in the larger Giant Stadium. I would love to see the Devils play in Meadowlands one last time with the old red and green sweaters.

Yankee Stadium might work due to the New York Yankees leaving after the 2008 season. The rink could be shoved in with goals just behind home plate and just beyond second base. Temporary stands could be constructed in shallow center field to get some fans closer.

I wouldn't think "it would be cool". I'd watch it because the Devils were playing and not because it was an outdoor game.
