Its a mere shame because of the Subject, many arent interested. Im quite fascinated by the whole shogun backdrop to the movie. Tom Cruise was perfect, and this movie doesnt exactly end on a happy note.

The rear projection scenes look rather cheesy, and the ending was predicable (Hollywood happy ending). But the acting was good and it has Ingrid Bergman.

Princess Mononoke ***/**** - solid Miyazaki, but it was a bit too high-adrenaline for my likes.

Bullit ***/**** - ever notice how some of these old u.s. 60's flick look slow due to the absence of complimental music during chase scenes?

Meet the Parents ***/**** - third time, out of pure boredom. Good fun.

Total Recall *1.5/**** - pretty unwatchable and feels aged. I liked it more when I saw it 10 years ago.

Ronin - **/**** - did nothing for me. Chase scene after chase scene and some really annoying characters. De Niro/Reno are a fine pair though.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

I wouldn't say I completely "understood" Eyes Wide Shut, but then again our simplistic, dumbed-down definition of the word means nothing. I didn't really understand "Diner" either... But "Eyes" excellent visuals, dialogue and atmosphere - I appreciated these factors.

Terminator 3: Meh. It certainly could have been worse. Some of the one-liners were terrible, but that My So Called Life chick did somewhat redeem the movie. The super terminator was pretty hot, too. 2.5 out of 5.

Solaris: WTF? It was certainly an interesting character study...I guess. It's just that the damn film didn't make any sense. They said in the movie "There doesn't have to be a reason," and I guess that's right, but the payoff at the end fell short for me. Good, moody cinematography and a script that does make one think saves this movie from truly sucking, in my mind. 3 out of 5.

I seen Lord Of The Rings and hated it, they should have ended the movie a half an hour earlier after they burnt the ring. Then Froto and Sam had to have a couple more of their sappy moments.

That would have meant ditching part of the book which a great deal of fans (me included) would not exactly be happy about. I personally was relieved they didn't end it after the destruction of the ring. One thing which was a bit of a shame was that they omitted Saruman's part form RotK, since that really showed the costs everybody paid in the war.

The Big Fish. Director Tim Burton meets Robert Zemeckis. Or The Big Fish is a kind of Forrest Gump Redux. Mythical storytelling where you decide fact from fiction to put together the puzzling metaphor. They even have the computer graphics manipulations just like in Gump. Nice story about a son's reconciliation with his Dad. Achieving immortality by creating myths; our children will then re-count the magical moments. I don't feel like psycho-analysing it mostly because I didn't read the book. Nice movie but I give it a 7.5 out of 10. Which is still good.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

(1932 version) - pre-Code version, a little bit more violent and graphic sexually, but not by much that the other version. Fredric March did a pretty good version of Jekyll/Hyde. Hyde is this version looked like a cross between the Wolf Man and an ape. But a 7/10, if you remember how old the film is.

(1941 version) - post-Code, hardly any violence or sexual undertones, save the first transformation scene where Spancer Tracy is whipping 2 horses and they turn into Ingrid Bergman and Lana Tuner. The Hyde makeup was a joke, not scary at all, Tracy goes from looking like himself to Kirk Douglas. Had more of a Hollywood glam treatment, but some of the effects were better in the 1932. 5/10

So that would be a "thumbs down?" :joker:

Yeah, I suspected something like that as I watched it. I'm looking forward to seeing the original, because the storyline of that film was mostly what carried it for me. I thought it was absolutely brilliant, and I would have forgiven a heck of a lot of Hollywood hoo-hah for the chance to see that story unfold.

But overall, I still thought this version was much better than most Hollywood treatments. Soderberg has a way of making every frame seem like something's about to explode out of it. Had me right from the opening scene.

I agree with the good doctor, but you knew that already.

Tarkovsky is so great, that Solyaris was considered his *failure*. But at least you're working your way up instead of down, that's always a positive experience.

Better than the other one with Karl Malden as Brooks, THAT'S for sure!

No Man's Land 5/5

Brilliant filmaking. It tells the tale of two soldiers, one Bosnian, one Serbian, trapped in the no man's land together.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0283509/

That was a rather good one, if you liked it I'd recommend Emir Kusturica's "Underground" as well. A movie that proves shooting your own people in a gunfight CAN be funny.

My latest :

Hiroshima Mon Amour 4/5 , much more narcissitic than other Resnais movies, and although it's associated with the French New Wave I've always thought of Resnais and Bresson as separate from Le Nouvelle Vogue, but this film appears to at least have inspired them. Not as good nor interesting as 'Marienbad', and in fact somewhat offensive, condescending and not apolitical enough for the zen-approach the FNW'ers thought they were capable of. Still much more interesting than Daddy Day Care.

The way they shown team USSR playing you would've thought they were Flyers/Bruins or Leafs etc.

Soviet teams were never physical bullies-giants!!!! They won because of great skills, puckmovement ,teamchemistry etc.

Also the goals they scored against the US were all portrayed to be the result of dirty plays. Like they had to cheat to score. :dunno:

Redux wasn't really worth Coppola's time, IMO. He did it for the money.
The added sequences (except for the playful surfboard additions) are all extremely raw and leave a mixed feeling. The French plantation sequence had wonderful potential and starts out incredibly well, but slowly deteriorates into something that resembles old Emanuelle movies.

That playful surfboard addition I found to be incredibly intelligent, and am astonished they left it out in the first place. Bringing civilization (surfing) by way of war on an indiginous people, civilization juxtaposed so closely in an ironic half battle half party, that scene summed up the Vietnam war more than any others in the film.

Nah, they aren't that bad, if you've seen this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102558/) movie, you realize that it's worse than the Pens. But Eraserhead is as bad as the Capitals though.

I don't think so.

As horrendous as the movie is, the score is worse.

Pat Priest spends about 90 percent of the movie tied up in her nightie and screams a lot. Her hair never gets mussed though.

The movie didn't really have a point other than to show the life of this odd guy. Some parts were pretty funny watching him deal with his many disappointments. Some depressing scenes. Overall, a-ok.

I really enjoyed it. Some parts of the story are lacking, but it is an interesting, unique concept that kept my attention throughout. And I want to buy the DVD, which automatically means it is good.

Ayup, "Ceclia Roth". Great actress. I said as much in the other film thread elaborating on my selection of it.

I liked Sandler much more as a mean, vulgar s.o.b. Like from Billy Madison.

People who get drunk, swear and make pee jokes are just simply funny - you have to admit.

The American Soldier 4/5, for everybody who wants to see Tarantino done intelligently, I'd say this is a better version of Le Samourai. Best of early Fassbinder. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065391/

The Marriage of Maria Braun (2nd viewing) 5/5, not for everybody, definately for Fassbinder fans. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079095/

Persona 5/5, (3rd viewing) Bergman knows his hoes. - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060827/

Pirates Of The Caribbean - 8/10

A couple things I could get from this movie, when Jack shoots Barbossa, Barbossa dies "after" Will throws the two gold pieces in yet jack doesn't die from the sword that went through his chest while he was imortal.

Also, Will was stuck inside the ship that was blowing up yet 15 seconds later he is on hte Black Pearl which was a good 200 meters away.

Other then that it was a good movie.
