Bodhisattva 12-07-2007, 10:49 AM I like Renny and staff. They have done a decent job. The team is decent. Plays sound D more times than not.
Renny seems to really have the greatest effect on the non-stars though. At least it seems that way. Totally, sincerely impressed with what he's brought out of Orr, Hollweg, Tyutin, Girardi etc.
But does he really have the chemistry, talent to motivate the Jagr, Shanahan, Gomer, Drury etc
This team has played like **** the last two games.
Do you ever wonder if a a more gritty guy was the coach he'd swift kick this team in the ass? Lord knows the Rangers have oooddles of talent top to bottom.
What if Ted Nolan was the coach of the Rangers? Or the "punisher" Sutter?
We dont have to look far to see coaches who are willing to become extreme motivational characters in their players lives
Isles4ever11 12-07-2007, 10:51 AM Please, a two game swing is nothing to worry about. It's a very long season, and teams will have their ups and downs. I'm confident the Rangers will get back on the right track soon.
Rags225 12-07-2007, 11:02 AM it's Kind of funny that you mention that b/c Last night after turning the game off I had part of the Movie Miracle stuck in my head.
When Team USA ties Norway and Brooks said "If you don't want to work during the game fine we'll work now!" and they did all those sprints after the game.
Sorta wished Renney pulled of that last night.
Bodhisattva 12-07-2007, 11:07 AM How about Sutter demanding pushups in practice after every shot that doesnt go on goal.
Shoot wide- give me 20
I couldnt imagine Renny EVER demanding that of the Jagr
nyrmessier011 12-07-2007, 12:16 PM It's simple.
When your captain is the laziest guy on the team and isn't motivated, theres a trickle down effect
NYR6814 12-07-2007, 12:22 PM We're talking about Jaromir Jagr here. Not Mo Vaughn. For you to sit at a computer and question a PROFFESIONAL hockey player's motivation or work ethic is completely moronic. I was at the game yesterday, Jagr played hard, and even played defense (amazing since our DEFENSE didn't play defense). The team lost, teams lose; the Rangers are a streaky team at this point in the year but DO NOT blame Jagr for poor goaltending or defense. That whole "trickle down" theory you came up with is a crock. They ALL need to play better, that's obvious.
HockeyBasedNYC 12-07-2007, 12:38 PM I think this is a legimate question and not just another panic thread like most of them here.
I also like Renney and the staff and what theyve done, but this is always the sticking point with me.
I'll never forget a behind the scenes Ranger program two seasons ago, when they made the playoffs for the first time in a long time. Renney was giving his "pre-playoff speech" during a post-season meeting when everyone was getting ready for the playoffs.
I'll never forget how drab his speech was and how disinterested the players looked. It wasn't motivating by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it was flat out bad. It was almost like he didnt want to say the wrong thing. Yes it was a different year and maybe players and even coaching tactics have changed since, but Renney is not a pure motivator. Hes a tactician, a good coach, a great PR guy and a great player manager.
But when it comes to purely motivating the team i think its left up to the players. Renney doesnt seem to want to lead by voice or pump up his troops with a rally cry, its not his sort of thing.
We've talked about this before and mostly everyone who likes Renney says this is one of his big cons. Theres no killer instinct in his coaching style and sometimes that leaks into the players' collective consciousness.

Have you been watching the hockey games? It's "completely moronic" for you to think every player is completely motivated or plays 100% all the time just because he's a PROFESSIONAL. Wow, he backchecked yesterday once or twice, the only reason you think he played hard is because when he does backcheck or hit somebody YOU NOTICE. Just because you were in the building doesn't mean you can tell me how he played, I watched the game buddy. If we start losing a ton of games and can't compete for a realistic shot at the cup, you'll see the washington days out of the guy, mark my words. He's done too much in his career, is not historically a motivated guy and is getting too old. Nylander isn't here anymore, stop whining and learn how to play with the guys we have. Skate hard to the bench on your changes so Orr can get on the ice and try to prevent a goal.

I feel the same way too. I think TR is really smart and has some great systems. He just seems too "matter of fact". This teams play, of late, lacks fire, motivation.
Maybe Jagr needs to do some pushups
