Brooklyndevil 11-29-2007, 01:24 PM This Clarkson kid is becoming very noticeable in many of the Devils recent games. He usually throws a few key hits in every game; he knows how to pass the puck and can stickhandle a bit too. He is also becoming very proficient at playing the puck along the boards and noticed that he’s also learning how to play defense by some of his smart play of late. If he hand any luck or a little more finish he would be one of the team’s leaders in goal scoring. He definitely isn’t shy about shooting or taking the puck to the net. He just needs to work on his balance a little more, because there are times when he spends too much of it on his butt. Plus this kid will throw his hands up if necessary. I just see him getting better with every game and gaining more confidence. He’s already a fine player who will only get better with experience. I can see him being a productive 2nd line player in the very near future. We’re lucky to have him.

DevilDog 11-29-2007, 01:38 PM Love the addition of Clarkson to the Madden line. Chico and Doc were discussing that Madden was teaching him that defensive responsiblity will lead to offensive opportunity and his progress has been obvious. Plus I think Clarkie's fire is inspiring Madden and Pando. It's really given that line some snarl.
I think we've only seen the tip of the iceburg from these 3 and really look forward to seeing how this line develops as the season progresses.

He should have played against the Rangers, but I think somebody was afraid that Avery and Clarkson would go at it, and after that Avery incident I don't think they wanted that kind of debacle. Next game however I hope Clarkson lays Avery out.
I've watched Avery play and I've watched Clarkson. With more experience, Clarkson has the same potential that Avery does.

its sad that a ranger fan would come into this thread and try to throw potshots, but in my experience, it is what i expect from rangers fans. a sniff of sucess and their heads get huge. 2 points is nothing to brag about.
onto the topic, clarkson is making great strides from the early games this season. he used to frustrate me how quickly he would drop his gloves, not fight, i mean literally drop his gloves. in his first few fights, his gloves were off before the other player even acknowledged that a fight was happeneing, and a coupld times, he dropped his gloves when there was no fight. this used to be a penalty and he has gotten lucky not to burn us by getting one. but his scoring isnt there yet, but everything else is coming along nicely.

Devils did start slow this season and so far thru 24 games have 26 points. Last season thru 24 games, Devils had 28 points and yet wound up winning the Atlantic Division with 107 points. Season before that, at the 24 game mark, Devils had 26 points (same as this year) and wound up winning the Atlantic Division with 101 points.
Looks like we are EXACTLY where we should be at this point!!

You might also want to check where the Rags were at that point as well...because I faintly remember them leading the division for a while, then at some point around the all-star break falling into the basement and even out of the top 8 for a while and crawling their way back in at seasons end.

Yup, and more times than not, they have been doing that alot. Their team has always been inconsistent because it is a mishmosh of Free agents thrown together and expecting to have "Chemistry". At least they stopped trading away their young talent and maybe in a couple of years you'll see a consistent lineup.
Yes it seems they got all the talent on their team this year, but looks can be very deceiving.

Yea but the last two years we also came out flat in the playoffs and get sent packing in the second round. There's plenty of room for improvement.

JerryGigantic 11-29-2007, 04:12 PM Clarkie played his best game as a Devil last night. He was all over the ice, and finally got that "wrap around" to work for him. Too bad Pando is down now, as that line is turning into something really special.
Madden is back in peak form and David certainly couldn't ask for a better teacher on how to play solid two-way defensive hockey.
MoonDragn 11-29-2007, 04:22 PM I wanna see a Asham - Madden - Clarkson Line. I wonder how that would work.

Prolly right on that count, but Asham does deserve more minutes.
Brylin took his shifts after Pando was hurt and is a natural LW, so my money is on Sarge.

Yeah but that line just didn't seem to click with Brylin. I want to see Asham on the offwing and what he can do there, Sutter likes to experiment anyway.
Ronnie Bass 11-29-2007, 04:42 PM If I had to choose between Clarkson and Avery it would be Clarkson in a heartbeat, nothing against Avery but in the long run of things I would really feel Clarkson will prove to be the better goal scorer and definitely the better teammate to play with.

Amen to that. Could never see Clarkie taking shots at the team in the offseason. Never in a million years.
And the way he talks about Madden, with almost reverence, is freakin' heartwarming. (Like after their sweet 2 on 1 goal two games back... "Well, I lost a wheel coming in, but Dog waited and made the perfect pass... And it is pretty easy putting one in the net with a guy like that passing to you...":))
MoonDragn 11-29-2007, 04:56 PM Yeah, you talk about chemistry. You know Clarkson is gonna learn alot just playing with Pando and Madden and we'll have another generation of Checking line... Dunno who would ever replace Pando, but the new line would be xxxx-Pelley-Clarkson somewhere in the future.

It's like he is in awe of them and honored to play with them, you can tell Clarkson has a lot of character and is someone you would take on your team any day of the week.
He's gonna be a good one alright.
fortheloveof666 11-29-2007, 05:04 PM I think it's notable that after Clarkson was a healthy scratch for a game he came back roaring. He's been all the better, hell, wasn't it his first game back when he fought Malone off the opening face-off?
I bring this up because...maybe the same effect can be had on one Andy Greene.

If this kind of thing does work; I wouldn't mind seeing this tactic used on rookies in the future depending on their play during the beginning of the season.
Clarkson is one of my favorite Devils out there. He's definitely improved the last few weeks and he is starting to learn when to drop the gloves. I was happy to see him finally get that wrap around. It seemed like it was taking him forever to finally bank one in. I also love it that he's with Pando and Madden; watching his interview last night it definitely sounded like he was learning alot of MadDog and Pando. Gotta love those guys.
fortheloveof666 11-29-2007, 05:14 PM Good point. Hopefully Andy comes out flying on Friday.
Me too, I truly like the kid and have since we brought him up. I really think he's an intelligent player which is as important as anything else. Unfortunately for him, his size doesn't allow him to be as physical as he needs to be. But if he can just play smart positional hockey with a bit of an edge and be a little stronger with his shots on the point, I really think he can be great for us.
I really think that, for a change, we should make him out goto guy for just one PP. Have him get in position at the point to just take a rip at the net and see where it goes. I really think it could help his confidence too.

I think it was towards the end of last season. But, I remember when Greene was taking point shots and actually got his first goal off one of the post I think, which was pretty sweet. He defiinitely has a strong shot and it would be great to utilize it on the PP.

BenIgnorant 11-29-2007, 09:41 PM Clarkson has looked MUCH better in the last several games. I'm very pleased with the way he has been playing after being scratched. He's showed an excellent attitude. Better defense, better offense, my only complaint would be that he still takes some lazy/unfocused penalties. Oh and his conditioning could improve a bit. He seems tired at the end of shifts.
He's a subpar skater, so I don't think he'll ever hit 20 goals (maybe in one or two fluke years) but he's good enough that he'll be a career NHL'er, who can hit double digits in goals regularly when given 10+min of icetime.
Classic Devil 11-29-2007, 10:03 PM I was somewhat upset Clarkson didn't make the team a year ago, I thought he would have made a valuable fourth liner. He played very well for his short stint with the team last year, it was only a matter of time before he was going to break out and become a regular.
