Hopefully, the ice should be in better shape tonight. There hasn't been an event at the Rock since Saturday. That gives the ice crew four days to make improvements. Here's hoping, anyway.

Hells Empire, was that you in the Star Ledger the day after opening night, talking about the construction of the Rock, pictured with Vanderbeek, and how you know every single nook and cranny that went into the building?

The Bergon record indicates that Sutter plans no line-up changes other than adding Elias. So, all the Greene lovers can relax. This is a good test playing a patient and good defensive team that just beat the Rags and Islanders. I want this team to be good, no, very good, because being mediocre will just hurt them in the long run. Go Devils!

and hows that gonna work? We were going with 7 defensmen and 11 forwards without Elias. With him in the lineup we need to sit one extra defenseman. Plus it also said Sutter wanted to play Rachunek. That means we'll have to sit 2 defensemen that was playing last game against Tampa.

As long as that ice is good we're gonna win. I've noticed our team is very sensitive to the conditions of the ice. Good Ice = good win for us usually.

Every game we've had bad ice we had trouble scoring more than 2 goals. Every game we had good ice we've scored 4 goals or more.

Ok, guess my message didn't go through when I had that network error message 10 minutes ago...

I can't wait for the game tonight. The stars are my second favorite team along with montreal. I hope it is better than the last home game against the isles. I felt like I was watching paint dry and I was sweating my ****s off. I'm taking a buddy to this game, so I hope he gets to actually see a good devils game. The last game I brought him to was against the pens in march when we lost 3-0. Not to mention, Marty needs this one to get to .500 on the season and to get above .500 against dallas.

I'm very much hoping the d is:

White-Martin
Greene-Rachunek
Vishnevski-Brookbank

If it is indeed like this, I believe we will have all of our best players on the ice, including the offense. I also think this is how the rest of the season will pan out. No room for rupp and janssen. Good trade bait though, hopefully with all the 3rd/4th liners we have and extra d, we can get something decent in return.

This should be a dandy!

I doubt there's a whole lot of fisticuffs though - East vs West games usually don't have the edge like in Conference games.
Should be a lot of fast break up and down the ice action though! Someone give Doc an extra glass of water - he's gonna need it.

How do you guys think the Devils play tonite?

I have heard they will not be as crisp and ready to go in the start (http://www.localapple.com/thread2267.html) of tonites game.

I for one disagree - back at home with the confidence and fresh legs should provide for a much more competitive game tonite.

As I said, it will entirely depend on the ice conditions. Our team relies on fast skating. Our guys are faster than most teams in the skating department. If the puck moves good on the ice, we got this game in the bag. Dallas depends on a good defense. But with the pucks moving fast theres a good chance their defense will break down and we will get a few points.

We need our fastest guys on ice tonight. Anyone slow will just get us in trouble.

Um...

The three times the Devils played this season after a three day rest, they have won all three games (10/17 W 5-4 against Pens, 10/31 W 6-1 against Lightning, 11/21 W 2-1 against Pens). I love our chances with "three days rest"!!

I think he was asked that question in an interview that's on MSG sometimes w/ Fran Healy (sp).

The only chance that would happen is if Marty stuck around to a point where his skills were clearly diminishing and the Devils had a young stud goalie prospect in the pipeline immediately ready to make the jump and be a clear #1 starting NHL goalie, AND Brodeur decided it would be cool to play one year for the hometown team

The odds of all of this happening? About 1%

I would imagine he would stay and help grow the young star goalie and serve as inspiration. Then maybe retiring and becoming a goalie coach with Jaqcue Caron to ensure any future goalie prospects have the best teachers in the game to learn from.

Even though I'm not a Devils fan, I will be going to tonight's game. I got a pair of tickets from my uncle and will be taking a long-time friend of mine from Philly. It should be fun.

The Devils are obviously playing a team that is red-hot right now in winning six straight, but I'm sure the home club is very motivated to put an end to it. I expect a low-scoring game tonight. If New Jersey can learn anything from the Rangers, do not take penalties against the Stars. They'll burn you. They're not deadly on special teams because if they were, they'd be atop the league standings (which they aren't). It's efficency with the few chances they get on the power play that has gotten them back on track after a slow start to their season.

Marty actually talked about that in his book "Brodeur: Beyond the Crease". He said that he probably wouldn't like to play in Montreal. He really never developed that special love for that team.

He was asked if he ever would consider playing for a different team he said that Boston and Philly were two cities he enjoyed coming to and in playing in.

Not playing Marty against Montreal is like going with your backup in the 7:th game of the Stanley Cup Finals....it's not happening. :)

Sutter's made a lot of questionable decisions this year. I would rank this one of the highest. Why on Earth would you sit your 3rd best defenseman if he's healthy?? This is the guy that is suppose to bring us back to being a contender? Well he's making a weak defense even weaker. Sutter's not some kind of chump that Lou picked up off of Broad St. You guys are acting like he's benching a Norris trophy candidate. Greene is a rookie, and he may be plus 10 (+/- is the dumbest stat in the history of sports) but he only has 4 points. He is playing well defensively, but he's not moving the puck or generating offense like he's supposed to. And if anyone knows how to get the most out of their younger players, it's Sutter. I'm guessing from the comments that Sutter feels that Greene's been getting too content in his game and not making quick enough decisions or moving quick enough. The decision was made in discussion with the whole coaching staff, which means Robinson, Albelin and MacLean, too, so maybe they see something the average fan doesn't.

I trust them. My experience has been pretty steady in finding that the experts usually know more about the things they are expert in than do the non-experts.

Am I missing something? Did we just place Greene on waivers, because that's what it seems like. Dude, he's sitting out for a freaking game. He's obviously not playing as well as Sutter and the coaching staff wants him to play so they're sitting him. It's not like he's been banished to the 9th circle for eternity. He'll be back in the line up, this is just Sutter's way of motivating him. I trust that every decision Sutter makes is in the teams best interest. Relax.

Games early in the season are a good time to evaluate how good your borderline players are. Greene isn't going anywhere but Brookbank or Mottau could be sent down, so imo tonights game might be their shot at making the lineup.

Plus for as good as Greene has been I think he's certainly got the potential to be even better and maybe watching a game or 2 could give him a better perspective on playing his position.

Um, maybe Sutter wants to test him? Maybe he thinks Greene isn't playing to the best of his abilities? Maybe he's slowly losing his job to Mike freaking Mottau? He's gotta be better than that, no? Mottau is a 2nd pair AHL defenseman and he's taking Greene's playing time. Everyone *****es out Sutter for exactly that. But, from their respective positions, Mottau is actually *earning* the ice time. Greene is
floating.

This *is* seeing what you have in him.

He has been mediocre this year, which is kinda understandable since it's really his rookie season. But he shouldn't be allowed to float through, he'll never get better.

Parise got to this same point in his rookie season (actually Parise was probably worse), and they dumped on him for a good deal of the season. Clearly he came out of it better since, no?

Andy Greene needs to remember that he's a college UFA and he's not entitled to a job in the NHL, and he's playing like he is. It's not the same guy from the playoffs
last season.

This Greene thing is being blown WAY out of proportion.. It's not like he's been rock solid on D (Not saying he's been bad either.. He's been steady).. I think the hype from last season, and how well he played, is carrying over to this year and overshadowing his play

Dunno about that. That last game against tampa, Greene took the puck away from Lecavalier at least 3 times during the game. He did it so nonchalantly you'd think he was a veteran.

We'll see what happens tonight. If the rest of the D plays well tonight then we won't have a problem.

Relax.

apparently you're the one who needs to relax. You sound like a hypocrite when you sit up in your bully pulpit, go off on another rant and demean every post.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, because I've liked what I've seen from the Greene. For a rookie he shows alot of defensive upside. His offensive game has been alittle disappointing, but we have no Scott Niedermeyers back there anyway. Excuse me if I like to see young players play over journey men.

Let the guy do his thing, Sutter>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>everyone on this board combined.

well i dont agree with benching greene i agree with your statement. Greene has been very good in my book, but he is not neidermayer.

that being said, i totally disagree with sutter here. in his defense all of the defensman have been playing well as late so what is he going to do? Mottau has been used on pp so i understand that move, and brookbank has been steady and has a right handed shot which helps on the the transition

Hells Empire, was that you in the Star Ledger the day after opening night, talking about the construction of the Rock, pictured with Vanderbeek, and how you know every single nook and cranny that went into the building?

Yes that was me in the Sunday Star Ledger that weekemd. I was in the paper on two occasions.

Elias has skated with the team yesterday and this morning. He will be in the line up tonight vs. the Stars. Oduya, Greene Weeks and Rupp were the last ones on the ice this morning @ the Rock.

I also got the chance to finally meet Mike Modano after their morning skate this morning. What a great guy, very cool and would have loved to see him play here in New Jersey. He likes the new arena and thinks it is pretty cool looking with all the features that the Rock has also he said we did a great job too. I am hoping to get his stick sometime late tonight before they leave or it will hopefully be left for me in the morning when I get to work.:)

It should be a good game and now heading back to the Rock now for the game.

Damn. I thought there was talk about sending more teams to Europe for games and therefore not entering our players into the Olympics?

2010 will probably by the last NHL olympics. THe NHL doesn't get anything out of the olympics becuase the playes stop being NHLers when they go over. The league would have already pulled the plug had the 2010 games not be in Vancouver and thus a riot would happen in Canada if the NHL didn't go.

They don't look all that great either. They've gotten better in the last few minutes, but they certainly looked poor to start.

this might only be funny/interesting/fascinating to me, but I want to share this as well. Before the game I'm in the bathroom and all of the sudden I hear a voice behind me, its the lineup being announced by the press announcer. I was spooked for a second.

No reason to keep Marty in there, they aren't scoring 3 tonight...and besides Weekes would probably be better.

starting these games at 7pm is stupid. Some people have to work till 6 and can't possible get to a game. I was going to try tonight, knowing I'd get a ticket. I forgot about the 7pm start time till I looked at the game thread. I'm not making the effort to watch 2 periods of hockey.

seems like I saved my money and time.

I just don't get it...how a team can come out and play like this after playing so well the previous four.

Another guy who looks like he's playing his first NHL game out there is Colin White...he got completely lost on that 2:nd goal. I guess he's nervous and it's his first homegame this year..and playing with one eye..I'll cut the guy some slack.

Marty Brodeur on the other hand..major disappointment in the first period. It's so frustrating to see this kind of play....

Not a great period, but this would be a 0-0 game if Marty didn't let in those softies. So they're not outplaying us, which is a plus, but being down 2-0 to Dallas (of all teams) is a big minus.

team came out flat in first 10 minutes.

they have a pp here to start 2nd a goal here will change game but no goal will boost dallas who is due for a power play and w/marty shaky that could mean trouble

devils seem to play very tense at home

id like to see weekes come into the game for the 2nd
the defense created the opp for dallas' 2nd goal with the poor clearing choice, but marty shouldve stopped it. 2 softies arent good.

I know and its tough but after 4 amazing games by marty I am willing to give him a bye there. So Marty is not all there tonight. Its no excuse for the rest of the team to be too just because marty is. In fact they should bail him out.

Why does Mottau have eight minutes of ice time and White only has just a shade under 5? I know Mottau plays the PP, but thats ridiculous, Mottau has more ice time than Martin too.

Both teams came out flat IMO.. Brodeur has been the difference (unfortunately, not for us). I completely agree that the team needs to rally around Marty because he's been huge during this winning streak. As for the bad goals, Marty has earned my respect/confidence for life based on past service alone.. but I still can be disappointed about that period :)

from where I'm sitting, the ice doesn't look all that fantastic. Even after the zamboni cleans the ice it still doesn't look right. The ice doesn't seem to be freezing all that well. It looks like when I go play open hockey with the guys and there's always one dude who can't wait and gets on the ice before it sufficiently freezes. That's what the ice looks like from up here.
