Devils9789 11-27-2007, 12:48 PM He's an unrestricted free agent next year, hes kind of underachieving this year. Lou could try and sign him or even trade for him, hes a Rafalski type player (power-play quarterback). Hes also making 1.4 million this season, which is really good for a d-man with his numbers.
2003-04 COLO, NHL 79 10 24 34 28 +7

Except he'll command $3.5M or $4M next year.
He has a powerfull shot too, and unlike Martin, it somehow manages to get on net.
fortheloveof666 11-27-2007, 12:56 PM Minus the money factor, I'd take him...he's faltered a bit from what I understand in Colorado from where he was maybe 2 years back. But I think a team like ours could maybe get him in line.
But again, money permitting. I don't think he's worth more than like 2.8 tops.
The Cuban 11-27-2007, 12:59 PM hes a Rafalski type player (power-play quarterback).
We could really use that. I'd say yes.
MissionHockey 11-27-2007, 01:12 PM What would Colorado want in return? (I swear if another person says Parise/Zajac I'm going to flip ****)

nothing because he's a UFA...
PS-I think trading for a UFA is stupid and to sign a pending UFA on a trade who is underachieving is even worse.

Example: Atlanta Thrashers and Keith Tkachuk.

Yeah exactly, it seldom works out (Carolina was fortunate however) and plus if they don't work out you gave up **** for nothing.

Exit56 11-27-2007, 01:56 PM surprised nobody brought up Ryan Smyth and the Isles :)
Colin Whites Eye 11-27-2007, 02:58 PM ive always liked this guy...definitely would be up for signing him
Brodeur2007 11-27-2007, 03:35 PM If he does become a UFA, i'd sign him.
ADD-devil950003 11-27-2007, 05:20 PM i would love to see liles on our blueline, we'd look something like this i guess
White Martin
Greene Liles
Corrente Vish
oduya is a healthy scratch if Corrente can come in next yr

Not for nothin but...I'd really rather keep Rachunek than Oduya.

If under your scenario we got Liles, and Corrente does comes up, Odontya will not be in a Devils Jersey.
Randal Graves 11-27-2007, 05:52 PM He has a lot of good qualities, but he's pretty small. We have too many small/non physical dmen as it is.
Randal Graves 11-27-2007, 05:53 PM surprised nobody brought up Ryan Smyth and the Isles :)
The trade was bad in that the Isles gave up good talent, but Smyth worked his ass off during their 1st round exit. Unlike Guerin who really stunk it up.

Not sure I'd classify Nilsson and O'Marra as good talents at the moment. Not saying it was a smart move by the Isles, but they might have given up the equivalent of Christian Berglund, David Hale, Ari Ahonen, etc etc. At a certain point, those guys were high rated prospects but eventually the teams had a sense that they weren't going to live up to those expectations. So might as well try to extract some value of them while you still could.

Who would we give up though? Bergfors isn't going to get it done by himself. I don't think we should sacrifice another 1st round pick either because I don't think the team could with stand without another one of those. Our defense is dreadfully weak as is, and with the potential to lose Greene and Martin to FA in the upcoming years would be too much for the team to handle. Liles isn't going to command as much as Smyth, but I guarantee the going rate will be much more than we can dole out at the moment.
Brooklyndevil 11-27-2007, 07:44 PM What the Devils actually need is a player like Radek Martinek. I know who? But if the Islanders ever fall out of contention, I would love to get this guy. He plays good positional defense and blocks a ton of shots, unfortunately he's only making like
$700k and doubt they would move him, but he is good.

I think the potential is still there, but it wasn't 2 sure fire prospects (those likely wouldn't be traded for a UFA at the deadline). In time we may see that the Islanders gave up too much, but I was mainly just pointing out to the original poster that Smyth wasn't that bad of a pickup.. it was more that the Isles weren't really contenders and shouldn't have made the move.
fortheloveof666 11-27-2007, 08:11 PM Brian Campbell (sic?) is a UFA next season. He reminds me of Rafi plus:

I know he seldom does it, but still...that's one of the hardest hits I've ever seen.

I agree with you there, although I think some of our HF tendencies probably overvalued Nilsson/O'Marra because they were former 1st rounders. If the Islanders were ready to part with them, then it's possible that they had already identified that they weren't part of their plans down the road regardless. I don't mind the Islanders going all out to make the playoffs......I think we've seen in the last six years that there's seemingly a Cindarella who makes it to the Cup.
Plus I thoroughly enjoyed that the Leafs' playoff hopes were in the hands of Scott Clemmensen and Wade Dubliewicz.

I agree. Their stock has dropped but I don't know if it was only because they were expendable or if it was a rookie GM trying to cement his job by getting into the playoffs. Likely a combination of both. The Oilers have a knack with developing young players so we'll know soon enough I guess.

That was great! For one day, I felt what it was like to have the Devils as my home team, then have them turn overnight into public enemy number #1 for playing Clemmer :D. He was such a "horrible goalie" they decided to sign him in the offseason. Those wacky Leafs.
Colin Whites Eye 11-28-2007, 12:02 AM Campbell is an all star caliber dman and will probably want big money
and with the state of Buffalo's D right now, i doubt that theyd let him walk. id definitely take him though
