Grant Marshall, a 34-year-old veteran forward with 700 NHL games behind his suspenders, set up two goals and then scored the gamewinner himself on a power play with 3:39 left in regulation, lifting the struggling Lowell Devils to a come-from-behind 4-3 triumph over the Portland Pirates yesterday in front of a turnout of 1,442 at Tsongas Arena.

The victory ended a five-game (0-4-1) winless streak for the Devils, who had scored only five goals and been shut out twice during that tailspin.

"You need guys like that," acknowledged Lowell coach Kurt Kleinendorst, "and it was nice to see Grant step up. Every team needs those gritty, veteran players.

"You have no idea how the young guys look up to those older guys. They get tired of hearing me say the same things after awhile. But when a guy like Grant talks, they listen."

Man I miss seeing him in the Devils games and hearing him interviewed. He's almost a good as Jim McKenzie.

:in my best Don Cherry voice:
"What a couple of good guys I tell ya."
