Docism's

Since we have a thread on Chicoism's I thought I would start one for Doc. Doc drops a lot of funny lines too...

Some of my personal favorites:

1. "Waffleboarded away by Brodeur"
2. "And its stuck in the parephenalia (sp) of Brodeur"
3. "Spirited ahead by Parise" (Gionta Elias etc etc)
4. I love when he yells "OOAAHHHHH WHATTA SAVE BY BRODEUR!! HOW DID THAT NOT GET IN!?"

the absolute funniest thing he ever said was right before a commercial break during a devils-senators recently

As they were ready to go to break, the players from both sides were in a normal shoving match after a save, and he says "Devils and Senators getting together...I guess we're in Washington." or something similar to that..he said it in such a monotone way, it was hilarious

As a Penguins fan, I would offer Steigerwald, Errey and a 5th round pick for Doc and Chico...

They are hilarious, no other hockey games do I have laugh out loud so much...

I won't rehash everyone's already mentioned favorites, so I'll say the kind of off-topic discussions that take place during the game...

One, Chico's second-guessing of the refs and himself talking about the refs...."now, Doc, oh, Doc, I don't know about that call...ya know what, nope, I'm not gonna say anything about that...well, ya know Doc, I'm just gonna say this one thing and that's all..."

And Doc always has this grin on his face and just sits back and waits... "alright then"

I also like a couple isolated events...I remember last season, Devils and Capitals had an afternoon game that I caught...and whoever the old guy is that doesn't know anything...Stan Fischler, is that it? Picked a couple random names off the Capitals roster and told everyone (the Devils) to watch out for them...the last of which was Eric Fehr...Stan said, "the Devils should 'fear' 'Fehr' (but he mispronounced it as "fear", not it's real pronounciation: "fair")

So they immediately throw it up to Doc, and Doc's opener is..."'Fear' is 'Fair' (referring to Eric Fehr) and he's a healthy scratch today...the Devils coming off a win versus..." It was awesome that he snuck that in there right away...

And I'm sure most of you saw, about a week ago, the whole pizza thing...Chico is standing there admiring a slice of pizza...and just when you think Chico is gonna say something about the game, he sticks the pizza in Doc's face and says, "see here, Doc, this is the thin crust that I like, and they use lots of different cheeses, when I make it at home, I just can't seem to get those cheeses right...and it's got some sausage on it, which I like, ya know what Doc, you're gonna have to give me 30 seconds here..."

Those guys are absolutely the best in the business...

Langenbrunnerian and Brodeurian are definite Docism's.

I always loved the way he says "Big Viktor Kozlov" or "Jon Bates Battaglia", not the words themselves, but the rhythm. (Fun Fact: according to wikipedia, Bates Battaglia is the grandson of one time Chicago Outfit mob boss Sam "Teets" Battaglia).

They're hilarious and they are the perfect 3-man booth for a ball game. I love it when Gary Cohen has to say "...and I think we've lost Keith for the night." Like in a very long extra-inning game, it was in the 16th Keith was trying to feed the plastic duck next to him.

Doc and Chico are the same way, Doc is the pro like Cohen and Chico brings the lighter moments to the broadcast. Those who are both Devils and Mets fans are really spoiled when it comes to their broadcasters.

I had this in The Chicoisms, but had to put it here with a bit of commentary.

Doc " It would not go through the Six Hole which is the chest, Once penetrated by Atilla the Hun."
All I know is the guy has a tremendous vocabulary, and a nose for the game and History of Hockey. Not to mention all the outside hockey references as stated above. He and Chico are great. Chico has a great personality, and Doc lets him go with it.

Lately with the amount of questionable penalty calls, it makes for classic comical commentary between the two. I watch a lot of other broadcasters, and cannot think of another tandem that wortk like these two do. Chico may not be the Best color guy........(man Crush on all the Devs, especially Marty) but he cracks me up more during a game than anyone else has. And Doc is Doc. Chico is by far the more of the 'homer' of the two - but even he catches himself and tried his best to remain objective.

Just last game when the Devils went on the PP 5-3 he said something to the effect of "now if we can just get... well, not we, but if the Devils can get some shots..."

There's a big difference between statements like that and playing to your audience who you know is made up of mostly fans for one team or another. Doc does a great job of cheering for both teams and openly states "both teams are giving up some chances and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, we kind of like it that way" :D

He's 62, so he's got plenty of miles left - so long as he wants to keep going. :) But you have to wonder how the wear and tear of travel to follow not only the Devils but do all those other games on Vs. and NBC and especially things like the Olympics will effect his decision to stay on the air. I would hope he decides to give up the 'extra work' and just decrease his travel to only the Devils away games when that time comes.

You have to remember that Doc has already had his fair share of health issues mainly prostate cancer, but he still keeps going. This is a great quote from the man. He really loves the game.....

What's the hardest part of your TV job?
MikeEmrick:Here's the thing about the job...Those of us who are lucky enough to do what we enjoy doing, long ago fanticized about being in just this position. It sounds simplistic, but I'm pretty simple. I wanted to get in free and see the games from a good location. I've been able to do that.

The hockey year is like a school year, in that it starts on Labor Day and ends around mid-June. I think like a school year, around February or early March, you can hit a lull with the travel adding up. Yet, the travel takes me to a lot of wonderful places and Fox Sports Net pays for the tickets. I have no complaints, it's my 27th year, and I'm thankful to God for good health. I am fortunately nine years cancer free, and even though my surgeon told me this is what I do when I'm a Rangers fan and you're a Devils announcer, his skill and a lot of prayers have made a tremendous difference. http://www.nhl.com/fancentral/chatarchive/emrick.html

"Off the POST with the SHOT!" always with emphasis on post and shot.
I say this on a regular basis, either when I hear a ping noise or someone tries to throw trash away but misses

Doc had a pretty good one referring to Madden and Pando on the PK - paraphrasing but it's pretty close (and it was on the Rangers in 60 highlights in the first period):

'Madden and Pando break out of the zone, if they had a dollar for every time they did that - oh wait, they do' :D

I have no idea, he should have retired 6-7 years ago. For about the same period of time he's been nothing but a floater.
He was good in his day (but not on the same planet as Scott Stevens) but I've never like him, he's a cheapshot artist.

"And the fans are chanting something pertinent to Avery."

Also a few non-televised Docisms from the fan club meeting last night. When being introduced, his credentials were being listed "He does the NHL on Versus, the NHL on NBC, he has done the NHL for ESPN, Fox, and ABC....he then interrupts with "I can't keep a job."

When asked what he thinks about having a second team in Toronto he responded with, "Don't they need a first team there?"

:biglaugh: Thats pretty funny. Maybe they should worry about their team and putting a competing team on the ice for a few years first before they think about adding another team.

Definitely. Somebody made a wiki page about him, too. But some of these guys def. look to the message boards. Whether here or on another site. Its the easiest way to grasp what the fans are talking about, and get public opinion. It's all organized, written out in plain text. No journalism skills needed.

My friend worked for the org. last year, and he said a lot of times they would scope the boards to get the heartbeat of the fanbase.

They should set up a t message board on the actual NJ Devils website, like chicago does.

That would be the easiest thing to access for them.
