Cronuss 11-24-2007, 04:56 PM I heard from someone that they ordered Bruins/Devils tickets and the tickets called the team the New Jersey "Blue Rays" or something like that.
Was this just a misprint or is there anything to worry about here?
I'm not a NJ D fan, but I don't want to see their name changed...
Anyone know anything about this?

I don't think the religious freaks really have much say, so no I doubt that's the case.
StriderTB 11-24-2007, 04:58 PM There's no way. The New Jersey Devil has nothing to do with any "satanic" devil. The Tampa Ray Devil-Rays changed their name because they're sissies who can't afford to lose any of their 29 fans.

Yep, after building a $350+ million dollar arena with the Devils logo/color scheme EVERYWHERE, they're going to change the name to Blue Rays.

BenIgnorant 11-24-2007, 06:04 PM As hilarious as this is, I think it's safe to say the Devils would not change the names of an AHL affiliate, ECHL affiliate, and build a stadium that has their logo everywhere, and spend 25+ years trying to build a brand and get more recognition, and then change the name to the freaking New Jersey Blue Rays. This sounds like A) misunderstood sarcasm B) a Ticketmaster fraudster with a sense of humor C) "someone" needs a trip to rehab, but should post here first with some of their other ideas.

Well considering my post will get deleted if I say it the way I want to say it, I'll be less offensive and just say their mental capacity is often limited by their religious ideals and anything that even closely resembles the opposite they're often in great opposition to.

Yeah, but that's a state senator. They're as important as the people that
round up shopping carts at a grocery store.
As for the south, it was assumed they would change their name if they had
moved to Nashville after 1995. There was alot of resistance to the name, and
even to the selling of alcohol at what became the Sommet Center.

A proposal like that wouldn't come from anyone else but a state senator or congressman. I'm sure he had received some letters and complaints or maybe it was a personal agenda of his own. heck if i know. I'm sure its not the first and wont be the last time devils face opposition to the name.

It was a personal thing. I think it's one of those deals where they all get to say their piece and that was his piece.
I'm sure there's a couple of crackpot letters every now and then too.
As long as they don't have any kind of pagan rituals, sacrifices or dark masses

That's actually completely untrue. The reason they seem so is because they basically all abide by the unwritten rule of invisibility...don't make too much of a splash, don't do anything radical to make yourself stick out and incumbency is pretty much a sure thing.
However you can pretty much blame the health care problem in NJ alone on the sole fact that no one in NJ probably even knows who their respective representative is in the state Senate, meanwhile lobbyists such as Prudential and Pharmaceutical companies are down in Trenton every 20 minutes making sure their voices are heard and the wind blows their way. There are many other examples, but in NJ the insurance/healthcare and pharm industries are some of the most prevalent.

But, the people have made their voices heard.
It doesn't matter who they are and what one of them says, they're unimportant pawns in a team-sport politics game.
I think by and large, what we have in Jersey is what the people want. They may

I'm not disagreeing really, but I think in what you said it sort of undermines the actual importance of the position. Most people, in any state, tend to only really voice their opinions the most nationally or locally otherwise their way of doing so is in elections..which in state/local, you're looking at about 30% of the registered population MAX and during a presidential election probably about another 25-30% more than that.
Their jobs though, aren't THAT easy, because it's more complex than you'd realize...but either way the yes/no they press is extremely important because something hangs in the balance.
What most people will never realize is, Senators and Assemblymen/women do quite a bit of "casework" where they'll hear from a constituent and then try and help solve their problem. I work for the judiciary in Middlesex and I can't even tell you how often we get calls from Senators and whatnot trying to press us to help these individuals.
The overall point though is, if there was a big enough movement, something would be done or at the very least there would be a political acknowledgment of the situation. Politicians listen to people who are likely to affect their re-election or progress. Religious lobbyists are some of the most influential people in politics.

JerryGigantic 11-25-2007, 01:23 PM Haha I used to think that until i saw our new intro video at the Rock. It literally has satan in it....Great stuff!
I was surprised (and disappointed) by the "Satanic" appearance in the home opener intro vid. Some people on this board liked it, but I thought it was both cheesy looking -- and uncalled for -- in its literal mindedness.
I prefer the team to stick with the original intent -- a reference to the "Jersey Devil" mythology -- first and foremost, and anything else one takes from the team colors, forked tail logo and the team mascot "NJ Devil" (your Beelzebuddy!) is their own business.
But that video is pretty solid evidence the team is having it both ways -- and actually IS referencing Satan, his own bad self, as part of the branding. (Unfortunately.) So those hypothetical southern "Jesus freaks" may be on to something after all...

Southern Americans need to ease up in your country... Going after professional sport franchises, for referencing a word, in their name, is damn right pathetic...

Well they didn't actually go after us or anything really. The guy in the article was just some idiot mouthing off because he just wanted to hear himself talk. Plus I'm sure he has absolutely NO vested interest in this hockey team anyway, so who cares?
My point about the South was merely that if we were there with the same name...it would never fly and would likely be changed at the drop of a hat regardless of the actual origin of the name (being it's historical NJ and nothing else really).

It is, but it isn't. To me there's a HUGE difference with that. I don't necessarily understand the whole idea behind them changing their name because I don't think it's disrespectful at all. But that's the world we live in.
Now the Washington REDSKINS, that is pretty much worth changing although it never will.
I mean...that's the equivalent of a racial slur.
But when you consider how mistreated natives of this land have been throughout history and even until this very day in most cases, I could understand them not wanting a bunch of white people prancing around on their good name and never really understanding anything about who THEY are.

I grew up a Redskins fan (as my parents met in Washington D.C. and I was born there, and the family had season tickets already...), so I've heard that name protested more than a few times. A borderline slur... There is a point to the argument. But that name ain't changing, either, as the brand is hugely valuable.
I flat out LOOOOOOVE the Chris Rock take on this controversy, with him making the analogy to a New York team of another name (as it were...) He takes that whole argument to the next level, as only he can.:biglaugh:
