BenedictGomez 11-01-2007, 10:39 PM Hey all,
I have an immediate business solution for the Balcony/Mezzanine pricing problem that many of us have previously discussed, but it would take very proactive leadership to initiate, and frankly the ability of the Devils to admit they priced the Mezzanine and Balcony sections poorly in the first place. In short,,,,, yeah, nothing will happen until next year, when I'm sure they'll probably raise the Upper Level prices and Lower the Balcony/Mezzanine prices. However, I enjoy creating business solutions, so I thought it would be fun to take a crack at this. Below is what I would do to solve this apparent problem.
Effective ASAP (say after the Flyers game), lower the $65 Balcony seats to $50 and the $100 Mezzanine seats to $85. Issue all STHs in those sections (and there are few STHs located here compared to other parts of the arena) a refund payable in five $100 debit cards per seat (and a check for $40) redeemable for food at concession stands and merchandise in the Devils Den. An event ticket not sold expires worthless if a seat isnt filled, and the Devils would make up in spades through ACTUALLY SELLING tickets at $50 and $85 instead of having tons of empty $65 and $100 seats. Plus, there is a TON of money to be made at the food/beverage counters that can only occur with people in the seats.
The biggest potential problem I freely admit with my plan is that while I think $50 is an appropriate price for the Balcony and would greatly help to sell those seats, I'm not certain those $100 Mezz seats would sell appreciably even at $85, but obviously they would at least sell more than they are now. I'm sure many people will think they should just wait until next year to monkey with pricing (and I respect that opinion), but I believe that when you see such a clear/obvious problem you should fix it immediately.
Thoughts?

It is a problem, however, they prob make more money this way than lowering prices if the differences in sales don't make that differnce...That's why I am for value game pricing.

The Balcony should be 65 yellows/45 light blues, the Mezz should be 80 yellows/65 purples
I still don't understand to this day how they left such a large face value gap in
their pricing.

I think they would sell so many more tickets in those two areas that it would far exceed the "loss" from selling the areas for less. I really dont like "value game pricing" either, because I see that as a slipperly slope. The term "value game" also goes hand in hand with "optimum game" like in Montreal, where it really means you pay 20% more for the same seat at a decent game.

Ottawa jacks up the prices 40% ("premium-plus" game) against the Leafs.

40%!?!?!?! :amazed:
Well I guess that's a good example of what I mean.

Because you guys will show up.
Buffalo does the same thing. Which is real out of the ordinary for them, they essentially give their seats away. Although they might have reached, because the first game in Buffalo this season against the Leafs didn't sellout, right?

Well yeah, even at +40%, it's still cheaper than going to a game at the Air Canada Centre.
I think they had 18,000 and change when the Leafs played in Buffalo at the start of the season. Dunno what the capacity is.
A lot of Leaf fans can't be bothered to go to a game on the other side of the border now because of the ridiculous delays at the border. Tough to plan a day when you could sit at the border for hours on end.
