NJDevilsFan21 10-30-2007, 11:44 PM Now I hate the Rangers, but I have to say - this chant is way overdone. Our first game, crowd sold out and pumped... I fully expected plenty of "let's go Devils!" chants early on in the game. Instead there must have been like eight "Rangers suck!" chants in the first five minutes of the game.
During the second period after we scored, the one guy who's always like "Give me a D! DEEEEE!!! Give me an E! EEEEEEE!!!" - the "let's go Devils" chant that started after that was LOUD, and very, very impressive. Everyone seemed be in unison and it was really drowning out other sounds on my tv.
After hearing that chant, I couldn't help but to think... I am actually starting to hate the "Rangers suck!" chant because it's way overdone and is being in used in places when "let's go Devils!" could be chanted to help give our team a boost. If you are Brodeur... Parise... any Devil - what would give the little extra jump? Hearing how much the Rangers suck constantly, or having an entire crowd motivating you?
If we must keep using this chant as frequently as we do... I propose that we at least use it to start a "let's go Devils!" chant right after. Just like the one guy who's like "give me a D!!!" maybe this chant could be used to start a really loud chant where the entire crowd is in unison once everyone catches on.
Just had to voice my opinion - that's all. :)
devsfan8 10-30-2007, 11:48 PM As a member of the section that wears the Rangers Suck Hats and a friend of the guy with the deafening whistle, I will say it is the other people who try to do it atthe wrong times and it gets annoying.
But there is nothing wrong with when he does it as he picks the perfect times and only does it once or twice at most a game.
But the entire crowd joins in on the Rangers Suck chant once anyone whistles. So it cannot be that unpopular or not liked.
Mark Bauman who does the gimme a DEEEEEEE, has been doing that since the early years in the CAA and is very impressive.
Jonathan. 10-30-2007, 11:49 PM It's as overdone as the chant that it's based off of: Potvin sucks. I'm tired of hearing 30 Potvin sucks! chants a game at MSG -- just as tired as I'm sure a lot of Devils fans are of Rangers suck! chants.
It's fine once or twice a game. But not more.

I hear what you're saying, but I think it was only because it was the new arena and people were "christening" it with the Rangers Suck chant and it got a little outta hand. I dont think you're gonna hear it that many times at all the other games.

It was way overdone 10 years ago. When they stopped playing the
"Rangers suck song" to keep it from happening, it spread like wildfire.
Sometimes it gets to embarrassing proportions. Saturday was one of
those times.
Here's what I say, if you want to do that chant 5,000 times in one game,
do it at MSG, then at least it's somewhat clever. Kinda like "We Want Fishsticks!"
That was funny because it was done at Nassau.
The atmosphere of people sitting on their hands and then a whistle and a blurting
of "RANGERS SUCK!", then more sitting on the hands... not too good.
Easton 10-31-2007, 12:21 AM i think it will change to gomez sucks
Haha, that's too much.
I'm pretty sick of it, too. If I had it my way, neither the spelling of "Devils" chant or the "Rangers suck" chant should be used more than once in a game. If it's a game against the Rangers, maybe once a period. It's unfortunate that the "Let's Go Devils" chant never lasts that long, people get tireless after saying it four or five times.
joeskow 10-31-2007, 12:36 AM hate it... it's not original.
pepe22 10-31-2007, 12:38 AM You know it's gone too far when you hear it at the damn Bon Jovi concert. I heard the whistle before Bon Jovi took the stage and I pleaded with my friend not to do it, but of course he screams "Rangers Suck!" and he was the only idiot in the entire friggin arena to actually do it. There were a few older ladies near us and they did not look happy. THAT is when you know this chant has gone too far.

DevsOwnYou 10-31-2007, 01:00 AM I do not mind it when we play the Rangers. But against the other NHL teams, it is quite boring.
Unless, there is some clown wearing a Rangers jersey/shirt/hat in the arena that is rooting for the other team and acting stupid-then the chant directed at him is acceptable.
Mr.Krinkle 10-31-2007, 01:38 AM Yeah it has been a while since we had one of these hasn't it?
Yeah it's overdone, yeah it's unoriginal. No, it's not going away anytime soon, you'll get over it.
DevilsFan38 10-31-2007, 07:27 AM It is way, way overdone. If we're not playing the Rangers it's just stupid. And the "second part" of it is even worse.
Yeah it has been a while since we had one of these hasn't it?

Not really. It makes sense for Rags fans to chant "Potvin Sucks" because they have a reason to be jealous of all the Islander cups during Potvin's playing days. It makes no sense whatsoever for Devils fans, who have enjoyed three cups in recent memory, to be chanting about the Rangers, who have been mostly woeful during the Devils dynasty. I liken it to the way New England fans chanted "Yankees Suck" during the trophy presentation the first time the Pats won the Super Bowl, and also when the Red Sox were celebrating their championships. Get over the inferiority complex, already. Yours is the better team, so don't focus on your weak rival during a time of triumph and superiority. I think there's a place for the chant during Ranger games only, and sparingly at that.
Luke3026 10-31-2007, 07:41 AM I think it's silly. It really speaks to the inferiority complex we have as Devils fans. Don't we have our own identity? Are we really THAT concerned with the Rangers all the time that we have to chant that when we're playing the Lightening, Sens, whoever?
bleedingnose231 10-31-2007, 08:01 AM You can blame it on the new generation coming in (ie the collage age drinking group). I am in section 231. On Saturday, there were a bunch of young guys in the row in front of me that started the chant every 5-minutes. They thought it was hilarious. They were even saying it wrong (Rangers suck, Gomez swallows). Please stick with the Flyers, it has more meaning. I have gotten into shouting matches before over this stupid, unoriginal chant. Its a losing battle.
If it is going to be done, it must be follow up by a good Let’s Go Devilssss.

DevilBesideYou 10-31-2007, 08:49 AM I think a big "problem" with the "let's go devils" chants is: we can never, ever do them in unison. Never at the CAA, and certainly not at the Rock on opening night. So what you have are a bunch of people chanting "let's go devils" from one end of the arena, then another group starts up, but they're not in synch with the other group, then it becomes a big mess.
Personally, I'd like to hear more "Marty's better" and "Parise's better"

Thats because too many sections and groups worry about being better and feel like they always start the chants, instead of just going along with who ever starts, there is too many fans and sections that feel they will only say lets go devils if they start it!

Actually, I think it started when it came out he was a wife beater. They started with the "Potvin Sucks!" and "You beat your wife Potvin, you beat your wife' followed by 2 claps and a few other chants. I could be wrong but I think either the day of or the day before a Rangers/Islander game the lead story in all the papers was his arrest. Most of those have died off though except for the Potvin sucks one.

I'm a Rangers season ticket holder, and they still do the Beat your wife Potvin chants too...
The Potvin Sucks chant is totally lame. Way overdone, long past its expiration date.
As for the Rangers Suck chant at Devils games, to me its an inferiority complex thing that some Devils fans seem to have... which, as a Rangers fan, I cant understand at all. I mean, if the Rangers had been winning all the cups in the past years I could kinda see it, but seeing how the two teams have been doing in the past 10+ years, I just don’t get it at all.
Take the Mets for example... I'm a Mets fan, and I'm embarrassed whenever I hear a Yankees Suck chant at Shea (when the Mets aren't playing the Yankees). It makes Mets fans as a whole seem insecure... why would they be worried about the Yankees?
Now, at least the Yankees have won and the Mets have not... the Devils / Rangers thing is the reverse... I think most Rangers fans pay the Devils no mind unless they are playing each other... you'd think the Devils fans would be in the same position, if not more so...
I'd be embarassed by it if I were a Devils fan... just as I'm embarrassed by it as a Mets fan with the Yankees Suck chant...

NO WAY!
Everytime that is started, we end up losing the game. EVERY TIME!!!
HBK27 10-31-2007, 10:24 AM The Rangers Suck chant is just way overdone now. Maybe once or twice a game MAX wouldn't be too bad, but that's never the case. I'd rather the chant just go away, but I know that's not happening anytime soon.
Game Breaker 10-31-2007, 10:24 AM I like the chant and hope it doesn't stop. Granted, maybe once per period would be better, every 5 minutes is too much.
Hopefully we can get the entire arena chanting lets go devils and whatnot. I just want us to be loud. There were several times on saturday when you could hear a pin drop...whats that about?? Get loud! I took a buddy of mine to a game last year and he said that the arena seemed dead. One of his friends took him to a few isles games and he said they were getting into the games there a lot more than we were. No excuse now, smaller, brand new arena and the team needs us because they aren't playing well right now.

Haha I didn't realize they still did the 'Beat your wife" one, I was at an Isles Rangers game in the Garden last year in a box and all I really heard was the Potvin sucks chants.
At least you can't hear it on the broadcasts though, the Rangers Suck ones are audible on the FSN feeds and it's a joke. I'm sure you'll hear plenty tonight, even though we're playing Tampa.
The inferiority complex is part of it, not from winning though, but from having an empty arena for so many years. It also doesn't help we get Rangers fans showing up to our games against teams like Tampa in Messier and Richter Jerseys.

falling2infinity319 10-31-2007, 12:10 PM I don't understand the whistle followed by the Rangers suck thing. It's a bastardized version of "Potvin Sucks". No oroginality whatsoever. However the chicken dance thing is cool, I guess. (Keep in mind I'm a Rangers fan). I remember I went to a game at CAA a few years back and it was a Pens/NJD game. The chicken dance completely caught me off guard.
I went to games three and four of round one in 2006 and didn't hear a Rangers suck chant once. Kind of peculiar. I didn't really hear any anti Ranger's chants at all, now that I think of it. I do Remember a trade of of Let's go Devils and Let's go Rangers chants though.

I was gonna respond but you pretty much summed it up. But for clarification purposes...Christmas has nothing to do with Jesus in all reality, neither does Easter. ;)
So having those days off is really just an excuse rather than an acknowledgment of any religion.
Oh and I would caution you when saying "PC" Liberals...because if you look at the reality of it...PC people in the majority are overly-conservative and/or Christians. But I do agree with you 110%

Yeah I agree. Everything is a ****ing euphemism of a euphemism and everyone has feelings and needs apologies. We got the FCC telling us what is decent and what isn't...like suddenly as individuals we don't know how to make choices of our own...and then you have a million and one "interest groups" that jump on your back for anything you say that is even remotely close to "offensive" to even a single person.
George Carlin was on the Q the other morning and apparently some DJ played part of his 7 words segment (back when he first did it). ONE person apparently got offended and I think he said the guy got fired and the FCC got involved and there was, I guess, a whole court case about it.
It's just ridiculous.
MacBeatsPang 10-31-2007, 01:34 PM Somebody tripped the bleeding heart liberal alarm. :shakehead:
It's not Christmas in your world either is it? Because that directly implies "Christ", and we shouldnt have Christmas off from school, because religious nature violates the separation of Church and State....blah...blah...blah...blah...blah....blah

I see you'd rather call me names and change the subject than either agree with or refute (or ignore) my argument. I'll give you another chance. Wanna try again?

yeah I got one....your entire response was subjective, skewed, and absolutely ridiculous. We can all argue semantics all day long and nothing is going to change.
maybe he should have called them Crackers instead? Oh wait, but that would imply that they're edible....and well, we wouldn't want that would we?
Maybe we can all sit here and take a lesson from you on how to adequately make a general statement which most, if not all, people acknowledge as such and understand it's meaning directly. No different than any other race related slur, generalization or stereotype. Get over it, it's mostly off topic and an absolutely stupid argument to even have.
Brad Murphy 10-31-2007, 01:50 PM "White trash" is an offensive term, as it implies that all nonwhites are trash.
It does? Since when?
ALine9900 10-31-2007, 01:52 PM It makes us look really stupid when we're playing Ottawa, at our home opener, and people are chanting "Rangers Suck".

I agree and it gets pretty redundant. However we did do it in the train station when we saw some Ranger fans, and to me..that's fair game.
But it really should be personalized to at least the team we're playing. I think we should focus our energy more on taunting the other teams goalies. I always found that sort of fun and it has to get into their heads a little bit. ****, everyone loves doing it to us.

"Subjective?" Of course it was subjective. By definition, pretty much every post on these boards is subjective. "Skewed" is another way of saying "subjective." So no bonus points there either. Then there's "absolutely ridiculous." You can call just about anything "absolutely ridiculous" but you don't explain why. Then you go on about how arguing semantics won't change anything, and present some what-if scenarios that have nothing to do with accepting/refuting/ignoring my statement, before calling the argument "stupid."
But you, like BenedictGomez, haven't offered anything resembling an argument laying out why what I said isn't true.
I won't ask again because, you're right, this is way off topic. I probably shouldn't have brought it up in the first place but I've always been bewildered about why people use the phrase "white trash" —*particularly the "white" part. It's never made sense to me.
Jiri Bicek 10-31-2007, 02:02 PM Eh, i think it's fine once or twice a game.. It gets some of the crowd going which is always good in my book... More than 3 times during a game just wears it out and no one is into it...
btw- I heard the Gomez swallows too.. There's also a video on youtube with someone doing it in their section...

Oh wow I didn't realize we had a real-life linguist on our hands! Skewing and being subjective aren't the same thing at all...you should probably go back to school because whatever education you got that made you think those two things are even close clearly didn't teach you much.
Subjective - meaning/interpretation varies from person-to-person
Skew - To take the information provided and alter it in such a way that it fits your point/argument/statement.
I don't think that makes them the same thing. But seriously man, drop it...it has nothing to do with the rest of the topic.
PS- Don't ever become a lawyer.
MoonDragn 10-31-2007, 02:06 PM "White trash" is an offensive term, as it implies that all nonwhites are trash. Do you ever use the phrases "black trash" or "asian trash?" Trash is trash is trash, no?
Careful when you point fingers.
I believe white trash refers to a specific subset of trash within the poor white community. Its not just that they are poor, but they are poor and have no sense of style or taste. They generally are seen as loud and obnoxious, without any manners or etiquette. They are stereotypically seen in trailer parks etc etc.
I think any type of stereotype is insulting but in this particular case I don't think it implied anything about the other races.
There are no Asian trash. The way the Asian culture works, is that they rather not be embarassed. Given a choice, the poor would rather be poor than to embarass themselves or their families.

Anyway as a Rangers fan I used to enjoy the Potvin chant, but now it's old and I can't stand it. The fact that the Devils fans do it against the Rangers is kind of lame, but what can you do.
Iamthewalrus* 10-31-2007, 02:43 PM NY sucks? lol! I hate NY and NJ, but for devils fans to talk about sucking?

Maybe if you crawled out from under your rock you would realize that we didn't say this when we sucked, up until now.
Thanks for trying to play the game though!
Gunnar Stahl 30 10-31-2007, 03:12 PM I think it's silly. It really speaks to the inferiority complex we have as Devils fans. Don't we have our own identity? Are we really THAT concerned with the Rangers all the time that we have to chant that when we're playing the Lightening, Sens, whoever?
i dont think its that deep. i just think we are displaying our hate for the rangers. i dont think its because we are having an identity crisis
Jiri Bicek 10-31-2007, 03:28 PM I think some are looking too far into this.. It's a chant some fans do for fun.. If you don't like it you don't have to do it, but it's not like it's so bad and embarrassing that you won't go to games because of it.. Personally i don't care what the chant is as long as fans are active during the game..
Mr Bojanglez 10-31-2007, 03:30 PM Lock it up
BenedictGomez 10-31-2007, 03:47 PM "White trash" is an offensive term, as it implies that all nonwhites are trash.
This makes absolutely no sense, but please do explain your logic. If for no other reason than because I trust the response will surely be entertaining.
ADD-devil950003 10-31-2007, 04:00 PM i was up in setion 232 in row 9, and i loved the loudness of the crowd, it was amazing. However, the one rangers suck chant is enough, i heard so many different chants that were really corny involving how we all think the rangers suck. Honestly one rangers suck chant is enough.
DANCIN'WITHJANSSEN 10-31-2007, 05:02 PM Now I hate the Rangers, but I have to say - this chant is way overdone.
it has to be done...maybe not as much as it is, but has to be. I'd rather hear it too much than not at all...plus the gomez swallows, taken from flyers swallow, is a nice touch. Very innappropriate as far as there being children around and stuff, but funny.

But that's the thing... it doesn't exactly get the crowd going. For a moment or two you hear "Rangers suck!" and that's it! Nothing after that, no up-tempo atmosphere at all. Which is why I said if it must be used so much we should at least try to use it as a catalyst for "let's go devils" chants.
Right after the Rangers suck chant whoever is doing the whistling should try to use that whistle and start a chant. 'tweet, tweet, tweet-tweet-tweet - let's go devils! repeat' If everyone can hear the whistle, maybe the entire crowd can chant unison.
The Rangers chicken dance song - now I like that. Outside of play, it's all fun. And about the Flyer's (or Gomez) swallows part. Come on! Maybe when I was like 15 I would have thought that was funny... it's just lame. Not something I want to take part in. :(
newfish 10-31-2007, 05:28 PM The Rangers suck chant does get annoying after awhile. I liked to hear it less, like maybe once every period but when its done 2 times a period it does get kinda boring. Id rather hear the lets go devils chant then the ****ing rangers chant.

The Rangers suck chant is part of being a Devils fan. We could be 0-82 and they could be 82-0 and it would still be done. I never quite understand how any Devils fan could have any type of problem with it, other than it isn't loud enough.
Muttley 10-31-2007, 06:51 PM Actually, I think it started when it came out he was a wife beater.
No. It started sometime in the late 1970's when Potvin threw a hard check on NYR player Ulf Nilssen (sp?) and ended up breaking his ankle, causing him to miss the rest of a season.
DevilsFan38 10-31-2007, 06:55 PM I think this is BS. I NEVER heard this Gomez chant the other night (which was the first opportunity to hear it). I certainly HOPE it's BS anyway.

Yeah, and the "swallows" crap was coming from the first two and last two sections of the Upper Level on the good side of the ice (i.e. 225+226 and 232+233). Everyone on HF that sits up there should turn to the people near them and "politely" tell them how low class that is and embarrass them. Nip it in the bud before it gets outta hand.

If there going to do the swallows stuff they should contain it to once a game. 3 times max for the rangers suck but I know that will never happen. I enjoy a chant every now and then but I don't need it every five minutes. At least we keep the spelling chat to once or twice a game, although I do enjoy that one a lot.

Yes, and this was back when all black people in the south were white folks' property. So what's your point?
Look, I have a simple point. I am by no means a bleeding heart liberal but I just don't get the need to use the adjective "white" here. If you're going to call someone trash, call them trash. The need to modify it with "white," to me at least, suggests that whoever originated this term believed that white people generally were superior to nonwhites. As in, "we all know that blacks are trash, but that guy there, he's white trash." I realize that over the years the term has been used to describe rednecks and poor people who fit a certain demographic, and that those using it today may mean no harm against nonwhites. I just don't understand it.
And I have to say, even though I'm generally anti-Ranger Suck chant, I am going to have a hard time refraining from it on Nov. 14.

As far as the chanting goes, knock yourself out and scream it until you're hoarse if it makes you feel better. It has absolutely no bearing on my life whatsoever. I live in NJ and I enjoy having a pro team here so that I can go see more games, so I'm definitely not chugging the Hate-orade.

BenedictGomez 11-03-2007, 03:05 PM they did the Gomez swallows thing and I laced into both of them.
So, hopefully we can make a little bit of progress if people around these people would just call them out on it!
GOOD FOR YOU!!!! Maybe that's why last night I was only hearing it from 232/233 as on Halloween it was 232/233 + 225/226.

The Gomez thing on Halloween, didn't come out of 225. I have no tolerance for that. If it came out of 226, that's another issue!

Then it was 226 on Halloween, as it was coming from both corners and nowhere in between. Also, (thankfully) I think it's only our side of the ice that does it. :shakehead And that 232 and/or 233 corner is the WORST! They really should evacuate the 50% of decent people there and carpet bomb the rest of them.

Are you kidding me?... It is one of the loudest corners of the rink... Along with 208/209, these are by far the LOUDEST corners of the arena.....
208/209 and 232/233 are the loudest sections so far at the rock!
BenedictGomez 11-03-2007, 05:02 PM Are you kidding me?... It is one of the loudest corners of the rink...
Yes, you're right, it IS one of the loudest sections of The Rock. And that by the way, is certainly nothing to be proud of (and something to be ashamed of) when the section is at its loudest yelling "Gomez Swallows" 4 or 5 times every game. I would send a representative up there and end that S**T real fast if I were the Devils and BOOT people that were caught doing it after being given one warning. Hmmm.. not a bad suggestion actually.

Why do you feel the need to worry about what other people and sections do?
BenedictGomez 11-03-2007, 05:17 PM Here we go again with the "wars" between sections... :shakehead
Huh? I could care less "where" you sit or stand for the game. What I do care about is the classless filth that eminates from 232/233 every game.
Why do some have to resort to childish name calling and put down other sections and fans?
Why do "some" in those sections have to resort to filth when in the presence of children? The "put downs" on those sections were earned. The Devils should make an example of a few people by booting them from the game and that crap will end real quick.

BenedictGomez 11-03-2007, 05:21 PM are those sections the new 228?
I havent had the "opportunity" to wander over there, but I wouldnt be surprised if you're correct.

Fair enough. You're entitled to your Opinion.
I agree inappropriate language is unacceptable, especially with kids around. Its one thing to be loud, but not obnoxious.
Still though you have to show respect to all fans regardless if you like them or not, its a two way street. If things get out hand than go ahead "report" them. But make sure you pretty much single out to the few bad eggs in that section. Just because you dont like a few things said by a select few, dont go saying that the WHOLE 2 sections are bad and everyone is horrible in those sections.
I started alot of "lets go devils" from 233 and the whole crowd joins in when I start them...... Also I chant LEts Go Devils with one verse to go that can be heard in the whole arena before the game starts, I also yell "we love you Arlett" before every national anthem sung. I have been yelling this for many years now...,...and never once chanted Gomez Swallows or Flyers swallow. Those chants are just wrong. I always watch my language at the games out of respect to other fans...
Just dont automatically say that everyone in those sections you point out are bad fans.
cj225 11-03-2007, 06:07 PM are those sections the new 228?
Yes...232/233 is the new 228/229.
fortheloveof666 11-03-2007, 06:11 PM Yes...232/233 is the new 228/229.
funny how that was easy to figure out.
Overtime98 11-03-2007, 06:32 PM Yes...232/233 is the new 228/229.
and the new 225/226 is the new 240/241
and the 208/209 is the new 218/217
thats how they assigned all of us.
cj225 11-03-2007, 06:34 PM and the new 225/226 is the new 240/241

Actually, 225 is compiled from 239-241....just to make that an accurate statement.
And they didn't assign me there, I chose to sit there.
fortheloveof666 11-03-2007, 06:38 PM RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WE'RE THE CRAZIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :biglaugh:

hahah. let's just hope the team makes both our nights in about 20 minutes ;)
DevilFisch 11-03-2007, 07:05 PM I got no issues with the Rangers suck chant as long as the Devils are playing the Rangers. I welcome it then.
I got issues when it's done multiple times when the Devils are playing someone other than the Rangers. It makes the fanbase look like they aren't paying attention and that they incredibly dumb. I wouldn't mind modifying it to whomever the Devils are playing to make it appropriate (e.g. duh duh duh TOR-ON-TO SUCKS).
Adding Flyers swallow at the end is just childish. Come on, guys, you can do better.
