It was just announced that Kipper signed a 6 year extension that would pay him $35 mill. He will be a $5.8 million cap hit next season, Iginla will be a $7 million cap hit, and Regehr will be a $4 million cap hit. Does this mean that the Flames could possibly be, maybe willing to shop Phaneuf? I mean, he and Eric Nystrom are RFA's at the end of the year, and Langkow, Conroy, Nolan, and Huselius are the notable UFA's. Not all of them can be resigned, and then there's the possibility that someone signs Dion to an offer sheet.

I'm pretty sure Darryl Sutter wouldn't trade Dion Phaneuf to open up salary space for Craig Conroy and Owen Nolan.

Realistically Huselius would probably be let go and Langkow (31 years old) might seek a bigger payday elsewhere.

And at this rate, the only way you'd make the Flames even hesitate about matching an offer sheet would be a huge offer which would require four first round picks as compensation.

If the Preds don't have a steady ownership solution by next summer, I think Shea Weber and Ryan Suter are the more likely offer sheet candidates.

In one word? No.

It would be nice, but I don't see it happening. Stevens would make the best mentor imaginable for Phaneuf, both offensively and defensively.

If the Flames were shoppnig Dion, I highly doubt the Devils would outbid other teams (such as the Rangers) for his services.

It depends how much Brent gets Darryl drunk at the next family reunion. :sarcasm:

Two words: Family ties. We're all Sutters now, and the Sathers aren't invited to our party.

NJ could offer just as good a package as Rangers. Start with Zajac then add on, Rangers have noone on their roster young like Zajac and proven.

Well if the Flames let Langkow, Huselius, Nolan, and Conroy walk, they'll be sitting at a cool $43.22 million...in which case they would have plenty of room to sign Dion. But the question is, if those guys are gone (especially Langkow and Huselius) who the hell is going to score for them. They're going to have to find another center to play with Iginla if they lose Langkow, and we all know that's not going to be cheap. Huselius already has 10 points this season and Langkow has 15. They're big parts of the Flames offense and they're going to want that paper come July 1st. I can see Sutter signing Dion to a deal worth 3.5 per (atleast), however squeezing a LW who's good for atleast 70 points and a center who feeds your top scorer and can toss in atleast 20 goals himself with a remainder of 5 million doesn't sound too easy.

Some people have called Zajac the next Nieuwendyk, and Phaneuf the next Scott Stevens. I think a trade involving the two should be made just based on the history of the two organizations alone.

There is only one way to have a dynasty in a Cap-driven world, and that is to have two teams (one in each conference) working together to ensure they are the most competative teams in the league.

BTW, before anyone states the obvious. I know Sutter will try to clear cap space by dealing Aucoin or Sarich before he lets Dion go...this is just wishful thinking. That being said,

Zajac, Bergfors and a 1st would be what Calgary would want.

Well obviously its not written in stone, but he does have the potential to be. Same goes with Phaneuf. He has the potential to be the next Stevens.

You do know we could be potentially giving up a top 15 pick in a draft that is stone packed with studs? I think that is a heafty price for Phaneuf.

Phaneuf is to Daryl Sutter what Zach Parise is to Lou. I think that pretty much explains the chances of Phaneuf wearing a Devils jersey in the near future...

Maybe not overrated as much as overhyped. Some have been talking about him as an elite defenseman since he came into the league, when I think he's really just now starting to get there. I still wouldn't put him in the top 10 in the league, but he is getting closer.

Phaneuf has been the best defensmen this year so far....granted we are only about 10 games in.

Anyone who thinks he's overrated hasn't watched him this year.

god am i the only one who thinks dion phaneuf is overrated??

I thought he was overated last season, I still haven't seen the Flames nearly
enough this year to make an assessment of him.

Overated in that he's not a god, obviously he's still relatively new to the league and is pretty damn far along considering... compared to say someone like Paul Martin
who came in with promise (albeit far lesser) and hasn't gone very far with it,
possibly even has regressed.

If we didn't have the potential to tank I would make the Zajac/Bergfors/1st
trade immediately. It's too risky, though, where they are right now. BUT, I think with the hype machine going full blast on Phaneuf, that is too little to get him. Bergfors doesn't have alot of value, to me, and Zajac is stil at a stage where you're
not sure what you're getting.

Maybe the Canucks don't want Kevin Bieska. Lesser player but still better than what we have.

I've watched Phaneuf play, and if we're trading all that for him we're gonna be robbed blind. Considering if we miss the playoffs and our team finish somewhere in last place, theres a good chance we'll get either Doughty or Stamkos or any of the other top 5 Defensive Prospects with our first pick that will make Phaneuf look like a 3rd liner.
