DoubleA45 10-29-2007, 12:06 AM I had the pleasure of being on the ice for the opening ceremony's at the new building. I was working for FSNY and was with the Cameraman on ice following him with the camera cable. When they called for each team captain to come for the ceremonial faceoff most of the Devils looked confused, a few other players down the line yelled "Patty", I think Madden was the one who yelled first. Elias looked confused, and went out there for the puck drop. I don't know if anyone else picked up on this from in the arena or on tv, but i thought i'd share it wit all of you. Also I gotta say I've never felt that much electricity at a Hockey game, I was in the Meadowlands for a bunch of the Devils Cup games and this was more exciting, Awesome building, and it was good seeing one of my favorite players playing for the devils now Arron Asham, hope you guys enjoy him
Game Breaker 10-29-2007, 12:12 AM I said it in one of the other threads. I laughed the second they asked for the captains to come over for the faceoff and I in fact yelled "Patrik" because to me, he still is the captain. I said it to the people around me that they were going to all be looking around and he would probably be the one to go over.

If Elias is still the Captain of this team in your mind, then I am my own Grandmother.
Elias as a 90 point player should not be the Captain of this team and if he had 90 points he would be fdar and away unargueably our best forward. The best player does not have to be Captain.
Elias does not conduct himself to the media the way a typical Captain would. He does not represent the team like a Captain does. European Hockey players do not make good Captains and this is not a rip on their skill levels and what they bring to the game. It is just proven over history.
John Madden is the Captain of this team in my opinion.
Elias deserves an A as an Assistant. But he should get the F for Failure lately. Lets hope that changes.

Really?
Did you see the game on Saturday?
Did you happen to notice the opponent and who is their captain?
Game Breaker 10-29-2007, 12:25 AM I never said anything relating skill to being a Captain. I just picture him as the captain right now until someone else is named...stay on topic.
p.s. "A" means alternate, not assistant.

Yeah, at the time I noticed the delay and confusion until Elias came out. I guess he qualifies since he was the last captain.

What media would he conduct himself with? I could handle the "local" press.
BTW, Americans make ****** captains too. IIRC, only one has won the Cup.
The Europeans will win it sooner or later.

what???? what about danny alfredson? or mats sundin? europeans havent been p0laying in the nhl as long as north americans obviously so you cant look at the past. there are several very good european captains.
GentlemanOfLeisure 10-29-2007, 01:11 AM Weird that we have no captain, but Guerin, Arnott, Jason Smith, Bobby Holik, and Niedermayer when he comes back, are all captains.

åboriginal 10-29-2007, 01:21 AM their look of confusion is an obvious showing of their lack of leadership. i laughed at it too, but it was so obvious.

My love for Mad Dog grows with each passing day. Way to stand up for Patty.
Luke3026 10-29-2007, 06:47 AM It was embarrasing to see the confusion. Wouldn't you think they'd know beforehand there would be a ceremony like that and decide who'd go out, instead of all those "You go" "No, you go" "Should I go?" crap.
DevilsFan38 10-29-2007, 07:20 AM They both have a Ton of Cup Rings. :shakehead
Right, because the # of rings you have obviously corresponds with your leadership capabilities :shakehead
Lidstrom, Alfredsson, Sundin - they're all great leaders. This idea that Elias makes a bad captain because he's European is ridiculous.
Devilswede 10-29-2007, 08:37 AM They both have a Ton of Cup Rings. :shakehead
Dude, you're just being ridiculous. What has a person's heritage to do with his or her leadership abilities?!
There are a ton of great captains out there, Sundin, Alfredsson and Jokinen being some of them. Just because their respective teams haven't won a Cup doesn't mean they're not great leaders. I'd love to have Alfredsson, Sundin or Jokinen leading our team any day!
Are you saying a guy like Brind'Amour was a bad captain all those years before he won a Cup in 05-06? The same goes with Andreychuk and all the other captains who had never won before they actually did win, and they weren't European.
So please stop with the nonsense before you embarass yourself even more.
Richer's Ghost 10-29-2007, 09:46 AM Our captain was already at center ice - Scott Stevens ;)
In all honesty though - that Madden would have started the yell for Elias to go just proves to me that much more why he would be a great captain. :crossfing
MoonDragn 10-29-2007, 10:04 AM Come home Scott!
Yeah that would be the dream, to have Neidermayer back. Not only would he make a great captain, he'd lead us to the cup again. He's what our team desperately needs.
devsfan8 10-29-2007, 10:13 AM Maybe I did not think to deeply about what I said since there are some highly talented European Captains, all of whom I would take on NJ right now.
I just do not feel Elias himself provides the leadership needed by a Captain.
Again, this has nothing to do with his level of play good or bad.
BenIgnorant 10-29-2007, 10:26 AM I think Elias can be a good captain. When he plays his best he plays with an edge, he plays with intensity, he plays good D, he gives the team a huge lift. He leads by example. In a tiny media market like NJ, it really doesn't matter how a player deals w/ the media as long as they're professional.
I don't really care who the captain is. European has nothing to do with it, Madden can be the captain but it really won't change a thing. Patty needs to play his best and same goes for every other player on the team. An "A" or a "C" won't change anything. They lead by example on ice, in practice, and in the locker room. That's what matters.

Whats even more interesting is all but one of these players are or would be North American Captains. :) And the worst of all of these is guys is Bobby Holik who has not exactly done a great job leading the Thrashers this season.
Richer's Ghost 10-29-2007, 12:41 PM For a minute I though you were Don Cherry
Nothing... NOTHING funnier than listening to him try to pronounce Russian/Euro player names.

If he doesn't play this season, he can come back next year right? I think Lou needs to get in touch with him. He is 100% exactly what we need.

I don't think so. I think he's obligated to complete his 2 year contract before he can come back to NJ unless the ducks trade him to us.

Tao Jones 10-29-2007, 02:45 PM I know there must have been a lot going on for everybody with opening of a brand new arena, but somebody's gotta tell Sutter to be ready to send a Captain out for the ceremonial puck drop before the PA does. Was this Sutter's first NHL ceremonial drop as head coach? I would have thought some other team would be honoring something or somebody to open the season.

I thoguht that was ridiculous that no one knew that was coming...they also dropped the ball on the player introductions in which the first five or sixe guys had to *****foot over the red carpet to skate onto the ice...not prepared at all...But the arena is spectacular!

Yeah I was cringing after Weekes walked over the carpet and it bunched up and the next few players had to walk over the obstacle to avoid tripping over it, would have been disasterous to have a player hurt tripping over a carpet
