Kozlov interview

K: So far the special thing is that the team has a winning attitude. The Carolina game was an important match, and you could feel the desire to win in every player.

SE: Did you not get a little shot of anger when in Atlanta your team was kept in the locker room while they raised their banner?

K: Well, it was a ceremony, they deserved it. As for our team, it was just starving for victories, and came out with passion. Guys dialed in and worked their tails off, like one is supposed to. But as you yourself understand, two games is nothing.

SE: Sure, but do you yourself feel that this team is capable of doing great things this season?

K: Based on two games? It’s a bit too early for that.

SE: Do you already have an almost telepathic link with Ovechkin?

K: No, there are still things to work on. We'll play more together, and we'll get a lot more comfortable.

SE: Has he been impressive in the first few games?

K: Alexander? Yeah he always impresses. So strong.. An awesome player! Its easy to see that he is an acknowledged team leader. Guys look to him, and he is trying to show them that its not in vain.

SE: How is it for you, as a veteran, to be playing with such young linemates? Do you have to show them the ropes much?

K: Hell/Oh no! Just send in the puck, and they are already gunning for it, stomping everybody, deking, scoring. I am all for it! And in general this team has spunk, young, with a great attitude. One just needs to understand that the season is a marathon, not a sprint, and success in two games means absolutely nothing.

Ovechkin interview

SE: Tell me about your partnership with Kozlov?

O: Everything is great, and getting better with every game. I don't want to jinx it, but I am very pleased. We're talking a lot, both during practice and games, constantly discussing what's the best play in different situations. I'm just extremely lucky that now Vitja is here. Take our goal in the 1st period. I was going to charge into the zone, but then I saw that the D-men pulled back in a line, and there was nobody behind Kozlov. So I lined up behind "the choo choo train", yelled "Vitjka!", and he immediately left it for me.

SE: The level at which Washington is playing right now - is it that of a playoff team?

O: Its better not to think about it right now, and to just go out and continue to play the same way. From here to playoffs is like on foot to China.

Exactly. huh?

(BTW, thanks for the story/translation Art)

Good attitude, they aren't letting the success get them too high - that will go a long way towards not letting the first loss of the season lead to a tailspin of lost confidence etc.

Just to clarify, Ovie does not call Kozlov "a choo-choo train" here, he simply refers to his tagging along behind Kozlov's back, "train cart style".

Yeah, I mean how the hell does one translate that? :)

To native English speakers, what is it called when children go sledding downhill in winter, and decide to ride together, one behind another?

An accident! :D Probably tobogganing, but there may not be a direct translation.

No worries, we understood the intent. We greatly appreciate the translation.

Good attitude, they aren't letting the success get them too high - that is what Caps Message Board posters do instead

that stood out to me as well CG, both are shaking off the early wins as "nice but mean nothing" in the long run...

the chemistry between these 2 is apparent already - i know that many have questioned Kozlov's consistency as a player throughout his career... if he continues his same level of play but scores no points, i wonder if Caps fans will question him as well...

like this quote about AO as well:
"Its easy to see that he is an acknowledged team leader. Guys look to him, and he is trying to show them that its not in vain."

young Alex could wear the "C" now, glad he does not have to yet.

There was an earlier article in Sport-Express which called Ovie-Kozlov-Flash the "Meat Line".
The family name Ovechkin comes from the Russian word "ovechka" - "little sheep".
Kozlov derives from "kozyol" - "goat".
And Fleischmann, of course, means "butcher" in German.

Voila!

Ovechkin's english is hilarious :biglaugh:

- Have you met Brashear?
- Yes, last season i've met him on the ice and we excanged few words.
- Nice words?
- I would not say they were nice words. We played in Philadelphia. There was a "five on five" brawl, and I happened to be next to this American.
- Did you fight with him?
- No, thanks God! My teammates took me away from him right away.
- Did he impress you?
- (laughs.) He looks like a boar, the mountain of muscles. We really need him!

Could translate out to "Caboose" behind the Train Engine...

I find the discrepancies in translations amusing. It makes the article a bit funnier and imaginitive.

I'd say "riding shotgun", but we pretty much get it.,...thx.

We are 3-0-0 after being one of the worst teams last year, some people would get cocky.

No reason to get cocky at 3-0 when you look at the teams Washington beat.

Atlanta - No depth anywhere, D sucks...doubt they make the playoffs this year.
Carolina - Not a playoff team last year....arguably not a playoff team again.
NY Islanders - Not a playoff team this year....lost too many core players.

Washington will challenge for a playoff spot and could even win the division when you look at how weak it is but lets not get ahead of ourselves. There is no reason to be cocky whatsoever.

You have a point, to an extent, but Carolina is absolutely a playoff caliber team. Like the caps, whether or not they fulfill that potential is up to debate. Staal is rejuvinated, and they have incredible depth at forward. I would be more shocked to see the Canes miss the playoffs than to see the Caps make the playoffs.
