Gunnar Stahl 30 10-04-2007, 12:53 AM I have always wondered who is more popular in New Jersey, Bruce or Bon Jovi
i know there are several other bands from New Jersey but these two seem to be the biggest.
i go with The Boss

MacBeatsPang 10-04-2007, 09:50 AM You could have added many names to the list, like Yo La Tengo, the Smithereens, Fountains of Wayne. I would still have chosen Bruce and the E Street Band above all of them, though. Bought the new album yesterday and have been listening as much as I can. Not sure what I think about it yet, though. I most enjoy his older stuff like Wild, Innocent & the E Street Shuffle and this one seems more like The River and Born in the U.S.A., albeit with much darker lyrics. I have friends who like Bon Jovi but I just cannot understand the appeal. To me, the guy's no different than any 15-year-old kid with limited talent who wanted to be in a band to get laid. But he had an uncle in the record business.

I went to Bruce's opening night, it was awesome. Still puts on a great show for a 59 year old. I enjoyed the new album music wise but his old stuff to me was 10x better, because he was singing about more personal stuff back then like life and maturing and figuring out what you want, now its mostly his political BS.
Totally agree about Bon jovi, always found his music just meh.

Full Collapse is one of my all time faves. I like War All The Time, but the new one doesn't do anything for me. Also, "Jet Black New Year" might be one of my favorite songs.

They were (i can't speak for now because I haven't seen them in about...**** 5 years) great, but you can only be as good as your music. Everything from before Waiting and to Full-Collapse they were a very tight, energetic live band which I always enjoyed seeing. But as good as they even were, I can't say they're even close to the title of the thread.
But I've also seen probably 300-400 bands in my lifetime to make comparisons and was once pretty heavily involved in local music. It's all pretty subjective I guess.

Thursday is my favorite band and I like everything they've put out so far. There's no topping Full Collapse, it is one of the best albums I've ever listened to, but WATT and ACBTLD were ok. They weren't bad, just different. I honestly think though that the move to Island Records restricted what they could do. I think that's also why they dropped Island and are releasing a CD/DVD through Victory soon. I don't know if they're going to have new songs on the CD/DVD but word is they're planning on releasing a new album soon and it will have a more Full Collapse feel to it.

You realize the reason they put out that Jet Black New Year CD was because they wanted off Victory records and they still owed them contractually 1 more release.
The fact they went back to Victory Records, I think, is more a sign of despair because you can ask any number of bands and they will tell you that almost no other label ****s you over more than that one does.
Maybe things have changed and people left or something, but judging from All Out War's attitude towards them, I'd have to say they're still the same.
I'm almost positive the reason AOW "re-grouped" a few years back was the simple fact Victory wanted them to honor their contract. Even though they had disbanded and moved on years earlier. I also believe they put out their last CD this year (which, as I band I absolutely love, was mostly bland and recycled riffs) was again to fulfill their contractual obligations because now they plan on releasing another CD on another label altogether.
The business side of music is ugly, and I really don't think it had to do with the record label with Thursday as much as it did that they just ran out of great ideas. I still view them going back as another step-backward, but we'll see.

agnespie 10-08-2007, 02:33 PM um, I don't really care about your opinion because I am stating what are my current fave NJ bands.
bands don't have to be "well known," or "popular" to be in this post. this is what I'm digging. and most of my friends know who they are, and some of my friends are actually in those bands. and these shows I've been to the last few months have been some of the best times I've had recently.
so, thanks, dude.
Thordic 10-08-2007, 02:35 PM Totally forgot that Monster Magnet was from NJ. They are definitely up there.
The amount of people on here who like MCR and Thursday is frightening.
Sinatra, The Boss, even Jon Bon definitely beat out MCR and Thursday, sorry. They are just a current blip on the musical radar. They'll be irrelevant in a few years, while the others have been around for decades and still remain immensely popular.
When MCR and Thursday can sell out Giants Stadium 10 times, then you guys can talk. Until then, you guys are stuck playing something like 50th fiddle.
agnespie 10-08-2007, 02:42 PM your favorite NJ band has to be a band that has sold millions and sell out countless number of shows?
at least compare talent instead. you're right about bands being forgettable though. nsync and those obnoxious boybands sold millions of records worldwide. so, they're better than a band like Thursday because of that? what sells the most isn't always the best.
Jonathan. 10-08-2007, 02:46 PM How can so many of you guys put My Chemical Romance (who became total ****ing *******s since they've gotten famous, mind you) ahead of Bruce Springsteen???

Not saying MCR didn't become EMO queens, but a number of their songs are my favorites. (welcome to the black parade, teenagers, I'm not Ok). While I think the only song I even remotely like from bruce is born in the USA, and I'm not even born in the USA.
