I had thought it was great that 6 out of 7 Sutters made it to the NHL, but I never realized just how lucky they all are. I read the article in the Star-Ledger today talking about Sutter and it mentioned that the oldest brother Gary, who they all say was the best hockey player of the family, but didn't go into the NHL because of his gf, won the lottery! OMG how weird is that?!
But in another sense, they were extraordinarily different. Six Sutter brothers would make it to the NHL, playing in nearly 5,000 games between them and winning a combined six Stanley Cup rings.
Gary, the eldest, was the only brother who didn't play in the NHL, having given up hockey because of a girlfriend he eventually married. Now 52, he runs a lumber yard in Kelowna, B.C., where he won a $10 million B.C. Lottery prize with three co-workers three years ago.
