I am shocked that it was not a hactchet job by this writer, who always seems clueless in her reports.
Overtime98 10-01-2007, 11:39 AM Ive seen some of these bars around the area, nothing to sing about yet. once the demolition is finished and the are is repaved it will be nicer.
I noticed that some buildings on broad street are being taken down as well.

Hey it's better than trying to search for a bar that's at least a mile away from the Meadowlands.

oh yea it will be nice. There was a bar about 100 feet from the arena, and also a Chinese restaurant! LOL Plus there is alot of fried chicken places on broad street! LOL we just need them to finish the sidewalks and paving the roads.
The lyndhurst and Arlington diners are near by and are very nice diners to go to, Tops Diner is closest but I have heard it isnt that great.

There is a good diner on Bloomfield Ave in Bloomfield, just West of the GSP. Forgot it's name but not that far from Newark.
Marv4Life 10-01-2007, 11:52 AM I seriously doubt anyone's gonna hang on Broad St. At least I hope not, lol. Those fried chicken shacks are the same thing you'll find near the Verizon Center, MSG(to an extent), etc.
I think they shoulda relocated the Applebee's from Springfield Ave/Bergen St. (South Ward area) to downtown.
DevFan-RU- 10-01-2007, 11:55 AM I hope to eat at a few of these restruants during winter break.
DevilBesideYou 10-01-2007, 12:07 PM I'll be hitting at least a few of them as well.
But man, the Star Ledger has such messed-up coverage. Yesterday they had something about how top acts like Ricky Martin are bypassing the Pru Center, today they're talking about how businesses are hoping to benefit from the new arena? Strange.

Since when did Ricky Martin become a top act?!?

very true

My point exactly!
Here it is (http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2007/09/top_acts_bypassing_prudential.html):
Concert promoters are not rushing to book shows at the Prudential Center, the state-of-the-art arena set to open in Newark later next month.
After Bon Jovi's 10-show opening stand ends Nov. 10, no entertainment events are scheduled in the facility until the end of the year, when Disney's "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus performs her "Best of Both Worlds" show Dec. 29-30.
During that 50-day period, the Prudential Center will host 22 sporting events -- including New Jersey Devils hockey, Seton Hall Pirates basketball and indoor soccer -- leaving 28 dates open for promoters to book.
But so far there are no takers. Bruce Springsteen bypassed Newark when plotting out his "Magic" tour, which begins tomorrow in Hartford, Conn. The Police, Maroon 5, Ricky Martin and Fall Out Boy are all playing Madison Square Garden in October and November, but none has Newark on its itinerary.

Thats absolute crazy talk. Tops Diner is easily one of the best diners in north Jersey. I've been going there for over 10 years.
Lyndhurst diner is good, but North Arlington is crap. I've been hanging out in that area of the state since I was 14.
Also, if you want a good bar in Newark, check out Hamilton's on Central Ave. Its a few blocks away from the new arena, but its a good place. And McGovern's across the street isn't too shabby either.

That quote seems to forget the forthcoming UFC 78 Pay-Per-View which will be held there November 17th. Seems to me the UFC was pretty intent on getting something there being they didn't even wait a full month after the venue opened to book a major event.
I know they're talking about concerts, but lets be real...PNC has a lock on the bigger stuff for now, Continental (aka HOVAAAAAAAAAAAA!) is still hosting a few I believe, and with those two right now obviously getting acts isn't going to be that easy. Most bookings are done long in advance of tours and therefore by the process which it takes to make such bookings the rock is going to come up short for a while.
It sort of comes off like people aren't turned on by the idea, but that's silly and undoubtedly an exaggeration by people who simply have no knowledge whatsoever of what it takes for an agency to map out and book a tour for any act, let alone major ones. This is an indication of nothing but the simple fact that so many people, based on the arenas location (which I find to be absolutely amazing), believe and almost hope it fails to prove themselves right.
On another note...I can't help but point out this one seemingly massive flaw based on the original article. The idea for the arena is to bring life back to brick city, strengthen it's economy and really put it back on the map as being a great place. So this guy goes and dumps his life into an eatery/bar in hopes that when the arena opens it will flourish. Problem is, the Arena will have it's own rather large bars and high-end eateries so at the end of the day is this REALLY going to help the surrounding businesses? They've made the arena self-sufficient in almost every imaginable way.
How long do you give it before they have slot parlors built in the bars or something? haha. Or OTB.

The bars in the arena will probably be overpriced, so the local bars should be able to turn a profit as long as they treat us fans well.

I just checked. Springsteen plays CAA in early October...you know, when the arena is still under construction. Over the course of the tour there are only three open nights at the Prudential Center. :shakehead

Yeah, in fact, I remember reading in the Ledger that the reason he wasn't playing at the Rock was because Bon Jovi is booked, but that he might join Bon Jovi and play some shows there later.
But anyway, dumb article all around.
Seat16inNJ 10-01-2007, 06:33 PM isnt there a bar inside the arena?
The bars inside the arena will not be accessible to just anyone. Fire & Ice bars for club and private box people. Goal Bar for Club and goal bar ticket holders. And the restaraunt is just that, any ordinary in house arena eatery that will charge $19 for an ordinary dish that any place else would cost $10. The places outside will serve just fine for the ordinary fan.

o ok, thanks for clearing that up because i had know idea about that, that sounds like a scam. all i heard was how nice the fire and ice bars and the goal bar were going to be, i just assumed that it was open to anybody
Hellsempire 10-01-2007, 08:54 PM There are two bars right down the street from the arena on Mulberry St. The Arena bar is a good bar and has good food as some of us go there to eat lunch. The other bar I do not remember at this time but it is also a good one with good food. Two good bars to go to before and after the game. I know I will be at the Arena bar before some of the games. Working on getting a pass to all the bars in the Pru Center from Jeff since I have been working there for so long.:p:

....So each game you are going to "tailgate", hit the bars outside the arena, hit the bars inside the arena, and maybe hit the diners afterwards? LOL
Dont we go there for the DEVILS TEAM and the GAME with friends? ....... That why I go to the games and thats why I want to go to the rock, to watch hockey with friends and devils fans not to be seen in Bars in and out of the arena.......Sure they are cool and pretty cool to check out. But a Bar is a bar. you go in drink and leave...Seen one seen them all... LOL ..... plus it gets really expensive going into bars all the time, thats why the new arena has these bars, to make money!
im just busting chops...... :)

I thought about that too, but like someone else mentioned not all those bars are accessible to general admission. That's more for the corporate sponsor types, who buy season tickets, and give them out to their employees. From that point of view its not a bad idea.
Anyway, my point is how much are those beers going to cost in the rock? Thats kind of the reason people tailgate now... to pound down some cheep beers b4 the game, then only have to buy one or two inside.
If these new places are smart, and keep their beers around $4 a pint ($3 for domestic lights, and maybe $4.50 for a guiness) , they should do well with business. At the very least keep them a buck cheaper than inside the arena, and undercut the stadium.
$7.00 is a lot, and when you multiply that over a couple rounds its very easy to lose some cash.
I was thinking I might be doing my pregame on the train, but now i'm getting excited about these bars. Kill some on the train, stop in some nearby place and do some quick shots, then woooo off to a Devil-Flyer game.

I wonder sometimes....do you feel special because you're working on the arena? Do you feel like you are OWED something because of that?
As far as I'm concerned...you're just a regular season ticket holder like the rest of us, and you don't deserve to go in there. Regardless of how many hours you put in the place...that's your job!
