treybrown 09-19-2007, 02:03 PM I've been away for a while, sorry!
So the question I have is, How is Bobby Ryan playing? Do you think he's going to be in the line up come the start of the season?
Heaton 09-19-2007, 02:19 PM I'm also very interested in knowing his status.
btpdragon 09-19-2007, 05:18 PM I was not impressed with his play, but also not unimpressed. He seems to be weak on the puck and fairly easily pushed around. He does make some amazing moves and passes, often surprising the intended teammate.
If he can maybe get a little bigger and stronger with the puck, I think he will turn out to be a solid player. Maybe some AHL time will do him well. The talent seems to be there, but often times the speed and grit of the NHL game seems a little much for him at the moment.
I do get the impression from many who sit with us at the games that he is a complete bust and a wasted pick. At least in their minds he is. I am always for giving a guy pleanty of time to delevop. As long as he is doing what the coaching staff and trainers ask of him, give the young man a little break.
Heaton 09-19-2007, 05:28 PM So odds are he'll spend time up and down in the AHL/NHL?
Spankatola Jamnuts 09-19-2007, 05:29 PM He made it past the first round of cuts. He's getting a long look. I think right now he's falling somewhat behind Ryan Carter and Drew Miller in terms of competition for a roster spot, but even if he's sent down it's likely he'll get a look later in the season.
kducks 09-19-2007, 06:01 PM I wasn't impressed after the first preseason game againt the Kings. He didn't seem to be able to keep up with the "big boys" on his line. I saw Getz having to direct his positioning right before a faceoff, too. I know it was early, but some of the other kids looked to be more on their game then he did.

most centers direct the players to where they want them to be on the draw....
bobby ryan did very well last year in both junior and his brief stint in the AHL. i don't think he will make the opening day roster and will spend some time in the AHL. he will play SOME NHL games this year via callup though. calling him a wasted pick and a bust is silly. these "reviews" of players seem to be based on how they do in drills (useless evaluation) and scrimmages.. he'll see a couple more pre-season games and those will be a better evaluation

The faceoff thing happens all the time, even between vet players. I've seen Andy Mac direct Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer. When you're the one taking the faceoff, you want your players to be positioned based on how you're taking the faceoff.
I do agree with your other assessment though. The part that has me shaking my head a bit is that I still see so much potential with the kid. He has tremendous hands, and a pretty impressive ability to find the open man. I just don't know that he's gotten into the mindset that he needs to step up his game.

It wasn't just him being a little out of place on the faceoff though, he was on the opposite side of where he was supposed to be. I have seen them directing before too, but this was Bobby standing there next to Kunitz when he was supposed to be covering a guy on the opposite side of the faceoff.

You have to consider that in the OHL, or the AHL, that might be exactly where Bobby Ryan would/should have been. The NHL is, first and foremost, a game based on systems. In the OHL and the AHL, the coaches would likely try to get Bobby Ryan away from opposing players, because at that level when a player of Bobby Ryan's skill has time and space, good things happen.
At the NHL, that same kind of strategy doesn't work. Players are too good, and teams play too solid defensively for that to happen. The ones that are still capable of getting that time and space are the ones that we label as superstars.
Zymergist 09-19-2007, 07:09 PM I think he is far from a wasted pick.
At the game on the 13th against the Kings, I thought he did alright. He got knocked off the puck a bit easier then I expected and he was a little awkward in this positioning that game but so were Getz and Kunitz as that whole line did not mesh well IMO. Often he seemed like he was trying to follow how Getz and Kunitz were playing and figure out how to fit in rather then just trying to play his own game with them. His skill level did not look out of place with the other players on that line and I thought he looked good on the PP.
However on the 16th against Phoenix I did not like what I saw. He took a stupid penalty and then fell apart playing horribly. After the penalty he was timid, looked very lost, and looked like he was well out of his normal game.
I think he will be a starter in the AHL this year and get some games in the NHL this year if he is looking good in the AHL. I do not think he has the confidence to play in the NHL at this time and needs more time with bigger opposition trying to knock him off the puck. He looks awkward skating but he is still fairly fast with good agility, it just looks funny. At one point I saw him muscle through 2 defenders at the same time with the puck so he can do the power forward thing, just needs more work to do it more often. But the big thing he needs, IMO, is confidence to play his game at the NHL level and not to fall apart if he makes a mistake.
I think he will end up being a starter in the NHL at some level and has the potential to be a top 3 forward for the Ducks down the road.

The part that worries me is the Burke's Ducks are all about character. With Ryan we all got fed the story about how he just blew away the pre-draft interview and so on. Seems to me that lack of work ethic and character is what's holding Ryan back the most at this point.
It just doesn't jive with Burke's M.O. and what we initially heard coming out of the draft. I don't know, hopefully I'm just over reacting to Internet chatter.

You said a mouth full there my friend.
BraveSirRobin 09-20-2007, 12:48 PM I think Ryan will be a good NHLer. He's just going to need a season down in Portland this year (with a few call ups here and there, I'm sure). I'm not worried about him, he just needs seasoning.
treybrown 09-20-2007, 05:03 PM Thank you all for telling me what you guys, and girls think =-)
Let's go Ducks!
bradycook14 09-20-2007, 05:04 PM with the success of wirtanen,i think bobby should perhaps play in the ahl this year,,also jason king has been very impressive
Spankatola Jamnuts 09-20-2007, 05:19 PM Man, our offense sucks.
CHRDANHUTCH 09-20-2007, 07:46 PM with the success of wirtanen,i think bobby should perhaps play in the ahl this year,,also jason king has been very impressive
Petteri may be back in Portland, remember this is truly his second full season in North America.
iHATEbeauch23 09-21-2007, 06:11 PM Man, our offense sucks.
i hear that
Randall Graves* 09-22-2007, 02:25 AM What alternative do we have but to send him with the team to London? there is a giant hole in the top six that needs to be filled by an offensive player. When he has the puck you can see how talented he is, he needs work away from it and more strength may as well give it a shot while the cap is not an issue as long as Niedermayer is suspended.
theShiba 09-22-2007, 04:20 PM Hey... can you guys just PM me whenever we're done talking about Bobby Ryan? I'm kind of over it.
thanks.
HansonBro 09-22-2007, 04:36 PM anyone have a link to ryans goal lastnight???
Sandman33 09-22-2007, 07:24 PM anyone have a link to ryans goal lastnight???
He had a goal last night..and an assist the other day. He might just work out afterall.
HansonBro 09-24-2007, 07:12 AM plus his 4 points again lastnight! :handclap:
Buck Naked 09-24-2007, 12:36 PM WHAT!!! 1 pre-season game is not a large enough sample to proclaim him a bust!!!?!?! Blaspheme.
jsginsocal 09-24-2007, 02:55 PM WHAT!!! 1 pre-season game is not a large enough sample to proclaim him a bust!!!?!?! Blaspheme.
Haha! Well - looks like he is gonna make the roster so we can have a full season sample.
Static 09-24-2007, 03:10 PM Jason King was sent down with Drew Miller so I think Ryan's push has bought him another week.
Buck Naked 09-24-2007, 03:18 PM Interesting that Carter beat out Miller and king it seems, anyone have any ideas why?
Kevin Forbes 09-24-2007, 03:34 PM Interesting that Carter beat out Miller and king it seems, anyone have any ideas why?
Carter's physical size probably fits him onto the fourth line a lot easier. Also Carter plays center as well as wing, something the other two can't claim. This may enable him to replace Marchant on the fourth line while Pahlsson is injured.

he's making the team, hands down.
if he doesnt, burke is a nut... which he is... but still.

Thanks for the insight, makes sense, I was hoping Miller would take that role.
bradycook14 09-24-2007, 04:56 PM 4 assists last night,not badd
Ducks 09-24-2007, 10:16 PM The real question here is:
"What do we name the Bertuzzi Getzlaf Ryan line?"
Kevin Forbes 09-24-2007, 10:43 PM The real question here is:

670 pounds of hurt?
snarktacular 09-24-2007, 11:09 PM If you're going to say "pounds" I think the noun that follows has to be "pain."
I'm not naming anything until that line actually plays together and produces for at least half a season.
Although one (geeky) possibility could be "RGB" as in the colors your body's going to be after playing that line.
Spankatola Jamnuts 09-24-2007, 11:13 PM Hmm. BGR. Burger. They are beefy. Bugger? Booger! Bigger, bagger, begger. Todd-Ryan-Bobby. TRB. Turbo? Not speedy, though. Or is it Bobby-Ryan-Todd. BRT. Bart. Brat. Bert. Borscht. Borat? For make benefit glorious hockey club Anaheim?
Holy **** I need something else to do.
byungshin34 09-24-2007, 11:19 PM I wasn't able to watch the game. Outside of his 4 assists, how did he do in the other aspects? I know his biggest drawbacks before were his skating and willingness to play physical. Has he improved in those departments significantly? Does he battle for the puck down low?
Davey Duck 09-24-2007, 11:19 PM The real question here is:

Berty Ryan Getzlafuzzi.
lux_interior 09-24-2007, 11:39 PM Yeah, I think Ryan will be in the lineup for opening night. Then when he inevitably hits the rookie wall, he will get scratched/sent down to Portland.
snarktacular 09-24-2007, 11:58 PM Berty Ryan Getzlafuzzi.
Ryzlafuzzi
lux_interior 09-25-2007, 12:40 AM Sounds like an STD.
snarktacular 09-25-2007, 01:15 AM Even more reason to be afraid.
Death of a Martian 09-26-2007, 07:25 PM So I'm in a hockey pool where I have to pick at least 3 rookies.
I planned on taking Toews, Mueller and Backstrom. Pronger was the guy I was going to pick from the Ducks.. (we have to pick 1 player from each team, 6 Def, 3 Rookies, 3 Goalies and 18 Skaters) but the 4 assist performance this Ryan kid had the other night has made me 2nd guess myself.
How many games and points does everyone here think Ryan will get this year?

Ryan Bobby Todd sounds like a NASCAR driver's name.
ohlfanos 09-27-2007, 04:56 PM With all this talk about Bobby....is he expected to play on the weekend? and expected to make the team??

yes he's expected to probably play, no one knows how long he will be on the club though. I think a lot depends on Selanne coming back or not.

There really aren't any better options for our top six right now offensively speaking, maybe he clicked with Bert and Getz or the talent on the other side played a big role, if he's going to London with the team he's probably going to play and the cap isn't a factor at the moment either. It will be an interesting storyline throughout the season, especially if Teemu signs and based on the hearsay it seems like a viable possibility.
