TSN: The defending Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks were dealt a blow Sunday when they learned that recently acquired defenceman Mathieu Schneider will miss four weeks with a non-displaced fracture in his left ankle.

Non-Displaced fracture, does that mean they have to fully break his ankle?
Because when I was 4, I kind of fractured(sprained?) my wrist, I went to the hospital and then they broke my wrist completley so it could heal properly. (They didn't even tell me they were going to break it, they distracted me for a second and crack...)

But this has some positve effects, it gives a rookie a chance to play in the NHL. (or persuades scotty to come back. lol)

Yup... Scotty's prolly reading this and sees that need. I hope that need will make him want to jump in sooner than later. Otherwise, yeah, it would be nice to give some rookie a chance to develop.

Let's hope Schneider heals soon.
As expected we will lose this D-man for an extended period. :(

Looks like the Ducks can delay the decision on who gets the 6th/7th/8th spot between Kondratiev/Hnidy/DiPenta a little longer.

A non-displaced fracture is a fracture where the bones, while broken, are still in their correct alignment. They do not need to be re-set and probably do not need surgery to put in plates/screws (though athletes might want to reinforce the now broken structure with that type of surgery).

Non-displaced broken bones generally take 6 weeks to completely heal, though they can bear weight and the rehab process before that. However, as with all ankle injuries, broken ankles are subject to complications from soft tissue injuries (the dreaded high ankle sprain) or reinjury/incorrect healing.

My guess with your wrist is that you had a displaced fracture, and the crack you heard was the doctors setting the bones rather than breaking them more. An incomplete fracture is generally called a hairline fracture (I had one in my thumb) and simply needs to be immobilized.

Well crap. This just sucks. Drats hopefully continues to improve to make the loss a little less painful.

Ah I see, that makes sense. Thanks.
(And this is why I'll never be a doctor ;))

Last season the Ducks survived injuries to their top 3 defense men at the same time (even if one of them did play while injured), I think they will survive this injury to Schnedier.

The current injuries to Gigi and Paulson are healing fine and Schnedier will be back 2-4 weeks after the season starts.

The sky is not falling and the Ducks will make the playoffs; the world is not coming to an end.

I believe that if Hnidy can be solid in his own end, then yes i also think Drats will play. But if Hnidy cant do that, maybe we'll see more of Hnidy and Dipenta IMO.

also even if one of those gets hurt we still have my personally favorite salcido. It just rolls of the tongue. I don't believe that this hurts us. It just adds character. It's not like that horrible stretch in february last year.

Huge holes? For a few games, sure. Even without Teemu and Niedermayer, this is a very solid team who should have no problem making the playoffs. Pahlsson will be back shortly. Giguere shouldn't miss any games. Schneider will miss a few, but that's all.

Did anybody see the picture on the Duck's front page of NHL.com that was linked to this story? Well you've got a picture of Schneider and in the background, there is an UPSIDE DOWN BABY. Hilarious.

Yeah! Who ever heard of a defending Cup champion missing the playoffs the next season? Ridiculous.

I've probably looked at that picture 4 or 5 times by now and didn't even notice until you said something. Now I'm wondering how in the world I never noticed the baby because it's so apparent.:biglaugh:

The only thing more ridiculous would be the two Stanley Cup finalists missing the playoffs. Never going to happen in a bazillion years!

Except that it doesn't usually happen, and last season was the first time both teams have ever missed the playoffs.

Anaheim didn't get a lot worse, and they were one of the best teams, by far, last season. There is absolutely no reason at all to suspect that they will fall out of the playoffs, unless they suffer some serious injury problems. Schneider hardly qualifies, and Pahlsson and Giguere will both be back very soon, if they even miss any regular season games to start the season.
