DevFan-RU- 08-27-2007, 12:19 PM In terms of seating capacity?
I always wondered why the AHL Devils didn't play in NJ at this particular arena. Is it too small? Or is Lowell just far better?

its not an arena im pretty sure, i have never been there but im pretty sure its just a hockey rink. for like local hockey teams. not nearly the caliber arena for a pro hockey team to play in.

Sarge18 08-27-2007, 12:40 PM It's too small for the AHL. They completely renovated the arena a few years ago and it almost resembles a real arena. It holds maybe 2500 people for hockey, but that's just a guess. I'm more surprised they don't seem to have any events at all there, like concerts or family shows. They now have adequate parking with the garage that they built. I've been to the two charity games they have there and the sightlines are pretty awful for hockey.
devils892003 08-27-2007, 12:44 PM i have played hockey on that rink and it is awful the boards make the puck take funny bonces all around the rink. i would not put and AHL team in there unlss they plan on change the boards and ice surface.
jkrdevil 08-27-2007, 01:44 PM I remember playing on that rink one time and the ice was coming up at the boards. You could almost touch the plastic piping underneath. Of course this was pre-renovations haven't played their post.
joeskow 08-27-2007, 02:17 PM I grew up playing for the youth Devils and played on rink #1 many of times... its too small to house an AHL team and yes the ice, boards and lighting are poor. I think the garage is for commuters only.
feerlessleadr 08-27-2007, 02:46 PM i actually skated there a few times after the renovation and i must say that the ice was pretty good...the boards however i dont think were anything to brag about but all in all i love that arena (mostly for sentimental value since thats where i started my hockey "career")

Same here. I think one of the rinks (the higher capacity one) was set up for figure skating and public skating more than hockey. Colder Ice and all.
devswriter99 08-28-2007, 12:30 PM It is a matter of over 4,000 seats. South Mountain holds around 2,500 and Lowell's seating capacity is 6,400. There is your answer.
man83 08-28-2007, 01:47 PM the devils have enough problems getting people to NHL games nevermind AHL games..focus on the real team first.
Gunnar Stahl 30 08-28-2007, 01:56 PM its not just seating capacity, but to put a pro team in a local ice rink is
not going to happen. i dont know how the lowell arena is but i have been to the WBS penguins arena and theirs is very very nice. its just like a pro arena just smaller.
Dagoon44 08-29-2007, 03:02 PM It is also the arena where they filmed the original Rocky movie

what? when were they in a hockey rink in rocky?
Dagoon44 08-29-2007, 03:34 PM tHEY USED THE ARENA AS MSG IN THE FIGHTS. IT WAS FILLED WITH EXTRAS AND MADE TO LOOK LIKE A MAJOR LEAGUE VENUE
Game Breaker 08-29-2007, 04:25 PM The only time I was there, January '04, it was pretty small, at least the rink where the devils practiced. There was no seating at their rink, it was at the other one as mentioned. As I tried to find the practice, I saw that rink and there weren't many seats at all and looked very small.

forceten 08-29-2007, 11:15 PM It IS, however, big enough for NCAA Div I hockey, should Seton Hall ever decide to get into the game...
