Lou's Koolaid 08-25-2007, 03:43 PM Why? because all the shady crap Kevin Lowe has been pulling off this summer. The other reasons Mark Messier, Glen Sather and the whole 94' Rangers EFFFING team. :madfire:Gretzky and the Mickey Mouse quote. Yes Im holding a grudge on some old stuff here. With all that being said nothing against the good folks up in "Oil Country" their great hockey fans.
DevFan-RU- 08-25-2007, 03:47 PM Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Lowetide 08-25-2007, 03:51 PM The sad thing is that unlike a guy like Lou L, who does shady crap and makes his team a contender for the Stanley, our guy made waves while running on the spot.

I'm not so much interested in identifying whether or not the activity is legal or illegal (clearly if Lou/Lowe did it and got away with it's then it's legal) as the result.
I have no problem inserting the word "loophole" for Lou, as I'm sure you have no problem doing same for Lowe.

I agree. I don't blame Kevin Lowe for what he did. He has a job to do...put a competitive team on the ice. And "if" Edmonton cannot attract players there...the next best thing is to give out offers sheets for long term and big bucks. I applaud Lowe for what he did.

Same here. The whining about it is ridiculous.
If the GMs hated it so much, they would've gotten rid of it in the last CBA.

DevFan-RU- 08-25-2007, 06:16 PM Meh, Lowe is no match for Lou...
wingmanpei 08-25-2007, 06:32 PM Lowe didn't do anything illegal by giving out offer sheets, it is part of the CBA, but I think what is peeving off other GM's and other people is how much he was offering. Most teams try to work within a set budget and the offers that Lowe was throwing out was putting those budgets out of whack, and Lowe knew that.
There is no way Vanek is worth an average of $7 million/season (actually $10 million this season), he likely wouldn't have gotten that kind of an offer if he was UFA. Buffalo had no choice to match after losing Briere and Drury, but in signing him, it throws their salary scale out of whack.
Same with Penner. Burke would have like to have signed Penner but not at $4.25 million/season because it throws their salary scale out of whack also, especially when Getzlaff and Perry are set to become RFA after this season.
Lowe has every right to offer contracts to those RFA and has the right to throw whatever amount of money he wants as long as it is within the rules, and he really doesn't have to concern himself with other team's salary structures. But don't forget, before the lockout Kevin Lowe was one of those people who was whining how other team's were raiding the Oilers by throwing big money at his players. Lowe was whining about how he wasn't able to keep those players because he didn't have the money available to sign them. Gee isn't that what Regier and Burke are saying about not wanting to sign Vanek and Penner to those kind of contracts.
It's not the fact that he is giving out offer sheets that is upsetting other GM's. It's the fact that here you have someone who was whining about rich teams putting the screws to the smaller market teams for years with big offers, supporting guys like Burke and Regier about that very same thing and then turns around and screws them over by making inflated offers to their players. Real classy and really responsible, but don't worry....what goes around, comes around.

Yeah, I understand that pov. However, the CDN dollar's rise gives EDM some leeway now that wasn't available when Lowe took over. He may pay a heavy price though because the dollar could go sideways at some point and he's tied his behind to Souray and Penner and those contracts may end up being so difficult to move the Oilers may have to send away an Ales Hemsky.

no i would insert a different kind of "hole" for lowe;)

no, because when lou finds loop holes he s trying to fix his own team and not screw any body else over

This totally came out of left field. What shady moves? Other than the Pitkanen trade and Souray?

Meh. It's a legal move that was agreed upon by everyone with the CBA, so I've got nothing against it. Some of them are really stupid though, like Penner. Way to overpay for someone not worth that.

Yeah. When I saw the title of the thread I figured a month-old thread had been bumped. I'm kind of glad RFAs aren't considered untouchable anymore. Makes the off season more interesting.

Or next off-season when Pitkanen and Stoll are set to become RFA's that a team with money to spare comes along and makes offers to those players that would make it unreasonable for Lowe to match, or those players expect the same kind of money that Penner is getting. How about the season after when Hemsky becomes an UFA. IMO I think that Lowe opened a can of works that could come back to bite him in the long run.
Central Jersey Devil 08-25-2007, 07:57 PM I hate the Oilers too, but not because of Kevin Lowe. I hate them just because they are the Oilers. I hate Kevin Lowe seperately. :)
I think he would be a great GM for the Islanders though. :sarcasm:
devils1983 08-25-2007, 07:59 PM no, because when lou finds loop holes he s trying to fix his own team and not screw any body else over
Kevin Lowe wasn't trying to screw anyone over either.
thefiestygoat 08-25-2007, 08:01 PM I understand that offer sheets are not the most beloved things, but I have no problem with Lowe. All he did was try to improve his team and he did it through legal means. It's all fair.
CorpseFX 08-25-2007, 08:08 PM you guys make it sound like Lowe trying to overpay a player and give up picks is a "blessing". while Lou makes up fake injuries for guys so he can get under the cap and send them to the AHL for a year of their entire life once he overpaid them and couldnt live with his mistake.

while youre out conspiring about how much you hate the Oilers... let us know how many teams actually have the cap space and their own picks to throw offer sheets out next season. youll probably find that not many will be able to. that being said, both players will probably be signed before any of that happens.
have a nice day.
heres your package of pampers.

Who said that I hate the Oilers? Did you see anywhere where I said that I hate the Oilers?
I never said anything about hating the Oilers, I am just saying that I disagree with the offers that Lowe made.
I was just stating an opinion and explaining why I feel the way I do. It's not my fault that you don't agree with it or don't like it. It's just an opinion and it is my opinion, no need to be insulting about it. Does it makes you feel better by trying to insulting me with that last little snotty comment?
Rayne* 08-25-2007, 08:29 PM At least Lowe doesn't fire every coach he hires with 3 games left in the season even if the team is near the top of the league standings.

Penner is easily worth what it cost Lowe to get him.

I'm sorry, I have to reply to this one...that is such a lame come back considering the Oilers didn't have a chance in this league until the cap system came in. Lets give K-Lowe two more years with this system then we can jump all over him.
Ronnie Bass 08-25-2007, 08:45 PM Now I think about it this thread isn't such a great idea.
