TSN.com has a poll on the homepage:
"Which recently-signed restricted free agent will provide the best long-term value?"
Zach is a choice, and is currently 2nd, behind Vanek.
Let's show our support for Zach!

It's the offseason, what else is there to do?

How they hell is Vanek winning when the question asks about value? Do that many people just pick a guy without even reading the question?

I thought value was the key word...Vanek's contract is anything but a "value." Parise's contract, in comparison, is a steal for his production, and role on the team.

I'd take Parise at even money over Vanek anyway.

ROFL @ people picking Vanek... long term VALUE was the word used, not talent.

What is the definition of value?

val·ue (vāl'yōō) Pronunciation Key
n.

1. An amount, as of goods, services, or money, considered to be a fair and suitable equivalent for something else; a fair price or return.

Was he a fair price? :sarcasm:

with money factored in Yes, but at even money, lets be real.

If Lowe or other GM's felt that way Parise would have had the same 50 million $$$ contract offered to him as well.

It's not a slight of Zach but to say that at equal money you'd take Zach simply isn't the case.

You must be basing that on the big numbers Vanek put up in only his second season.....Which is completely reasonable.....But If you're going to base "value" purely on numbers, I would point out the playoff numbers

2006-07 Buffalo NHL 16 6 4 10 +2 = .625 points per game
2005-06 Buffalo NHL 10 2 0 2 -1 = .2 points per game
NHL 26 8 4 12 +1 16 = .46 Points per game

2006-07 New Jersey NHL 11 7 3 10 +4 .909 Points per game
2005-06 New Jersey NHL 9 1 2 3 0 = .333 points per game
Total NHL 20 8 5 13 +4 = .65 points per game

Parise has consistantly outscored Vanek in the playoffs and by a good margin...This is a guy (Parise) playing on a defense first type of team vs. Vanek who is playing on an offense first type of team. I personally think these playoff numbers from these two young players paint a better picture...Because during the playoffs Almost everyone is playing a tighter, more defensively minded game and it somewhat negates the differences in style of the teams.

Otherwise if you look at the regular season numbers; your comparing one kid who played on a team that scored nearly 100 more goals than the other kids team ...

And I personally put a much higher "value" on playoff success than regular season success.....I'd take Claude Lemieux over Joe Thornton every single day of the week.

Don't forget that Parise played less games in playoffs when compared to Vanek. :)

Thats why I added the Points per game.....Parise's numbers per game are significantly better.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we would only hear about offer sheets if the player signed them, no? If that is the case, Parise may very well have had offer sheets much like Vanek and Penner, but did not sign them.
If all offer sheets, signed or not, are public knowledge, and we didn't hear about any for Zach, then no GMs must have had interest in him, which I find unlikely.

I'd bet that Parise received a few calls with regards to signing an offer sheet, no doubt in my mind.

Vanek is a great player, who probably has 50 goal upside. I'd still take Parise.

are you saying that if Lowe had called and offered Zach the same exact deal that Vanek signed he wouldn't have signed it in a second?

The Parise camp has already said Lowe has never contacted them

Unlike with the Sabres... If Lowe had crossed Lou, he may have become part of the new Prudential center.

Not neccessarily Lowe, with overblown, outrageous RFA offer sheets, but there had to be a GM in the NHL that offered a sheet to Parise. Maybe for less than his contract, maybe more and he was loyal. Either way, for what he signed for, and his expected production, he should be the best value signing of this years RFAs, IMHO.
