Devils Jersey Numbers.......

we all know that the team keeps jersey numbers as low as possible. Except for the odd exception.

Weeks couldn't keep 80
Asham couldn't keep 45

But players like:
Gilmour (93)
Mogilny (89)
Richer (44)

could keep there's.

So my question is, what size of star do you have to be to keep your previous high number? Who are current players playing now that if aquired would be on the brink?

Example: Would Souray have been able to keep 44 had we signed him?

I'm assuming it would be a dealbreaker for some players. If they couldn't wear current number on a new team, they wouldn't come over...

i dont think a number would separate a player from signing with a team, i think its that you have to be a well-known veteran or somthing

You would be surprised, some players take their number very seriously and when they change it, they let it affect them mentally.

Yup, I am like that in soccer. I have to be #11.

My friend plays baseball is being looked at by a few scouts. He said that it may seem stupid, but its the littlest thinkg that throw athletes off mentally, like a number change. He believes that part of the reason Robinson Cano struggled in the beginning of the season was because of his number change.

It's not like Cano hasn't changed numbers before though. This is his 3rd number on the team!

Players who are well established with their numbers have kept them, like Mogilny and Richer. I think it's probably at the request of the individual player.

i never understood this with lou, even tho i know hes a traditionalist and old school. like someone said, many players(myself included...or atleast when i played) take their numbers seriously and NEED to wear them. i know its all mental but if its important to the player i really dont see the issue lou has. its just a number after all. then again, that can be said by lou...its just a number. did i just answer my own question....perkele. i need to lay down.

That was a pretty nice question and answer session with yourself, impressive!

I think you've answered your own question. Weekes and Asham are nowhere the same caliber compared to the likes of Mogilny, Richer, Gilmour or Souray.

Yes....but he has been wearing 44 since he left, and has earned the right to wear that number with any team (providing that it's available).

on the new jersey devils, you are given a number. I would suspect lou rarely, if ever, (unless you're a future hall of famer) entertains a request for a number. does wearing a certain number motivate you more?? does it make you screw up less?
if it does, he should go play on broadway.

lucky for us, theyre not the borg. some numbers might actually help motivate. has nothing to do with glamour and glitter(and roasted mixed nuts mmmmm) of b'way. say if its the number a parent or sibling wore, say theyre dead and thats how u pay respect. say its when u were born or whatever and it means alot to u. its not our place to say what means what to who, we all place significance on crap. i know the final say comes to lou and the rules hes imposed, i just dont understand the reasoning(even though i successfully argued with myself earlier:P.) still, i feel if its THAT important to the player....then why not. if its not TOO important and he doesnt mind changing, then thats fine too.

I think that the numbers are kept low for a few reasons...
1) as mentioned before, Lou is a traditionalist, and doesn't want a team with wacky numbers all over.
2) To Lou the most important thing is the TEAM. Not you, not your special number. If all of the numbers are under 40, no one player sticks out. That's how Lou likes it.
If you are a potential HOF'er like Mogilny and Gilmour you can keep your number...as far as Richer's 44, I guess he was a good enough player to keep that #. Not like it was 54 or 64...44 is on the border for Lou, and I think if Souray were here he porbably would have had the option...
