Devils9789 08-22-2007, 01:27 PM Again another slow day here so i thought id start a marty save appreciation thead..
The best save ive seen marty made was against the isles back in the 02 season...mariusz czerkawski took a pass out of the box for a breakaway and deked marty to his stomach and fired the puck top shelf but marty extended his left leg and deflected the puck over the net with his skate blade. unreal.
Found an espn article on the game..
However, there was one stop everyone was talking about after the game. It was the desperation leg save Brodeur made on Mariusz Czerkawski late in the second period with the Devils clinging to a 3-2 lead.
Czerkawski got a breakaway after stepping out of the penalty box. He deked Brodeur to the ice, skating in front of the crease. Brodeur was on his stomach as Czerkawski went to put the puck high into the net. As he shot, Brodeur lifted his leg at the knee and deflected the shot wide.
"I saw it on replay," Devils defenseman Ken Daneyko said. "He was down and out. He did a hamstring curl. That was one of the best saves I've seen. That's why he is getting paid $8 million bucks.
anyone got a video of that?? haha

Systemfel 08-22-2007, 01:39 PM Question: when did Marty make $8M?
Colin Whites Eye 08-22-2007, 01:41 PM one of mine is the save against the Kings (i think? maybe another west coast team) where he was laying down on one side of the net, the puck bounced to an open player ont he other side of the net, and somehow marty lunged across the whole net and kept it out
ill have to think about some more and ill look for youtube videos
DudeCar 08-22-2007, 01:42 PM Scene: 2003 Conference Finals, Game 7 at Ottawa. The score was tied 2-2, with mere minutes remaining in the 3rd period...it was apparent that the next goal would decide the game.
Niedermayer is very un-characteristically out of position, and Marian Hossa comes charging from the right side to cherrypick a partially-empty net...and gathers the puck and does not screw up, wristing a hard shot that manages to slightly elevate.
...Brodeur slides with cat-like reflexes, getting enough of the puck to deflect it over the net...an American Devils fan will never forget the call, and it is one of the few calls by Gary Thorne that I would ever call "memorable".
"Hossa is all alone, shoots....save Brodeur! Oh, what a save on Marian Hossa!"
Without Brodeur, the 2003 playoffs would have looked a lot like the 2007 playoffs. Hossa's reaction after he was denied is the personification of "pure frustration".
Drewr15 08-22-2007, 02:22 PM My personal fave was the reach back save he made on Darren McCarty in the opening minutes of Game 3 of the 1995 Stanley Cup final. He was down on the left side of the net and somehow the puck squirted loose the right, McCarty had a wide open net and Brodeur reached back with his stick and some how had the wrist strength to hold off McCarty's stuff in with just his stick. :handclap:
ALine9900 08-22-2007, 02:25 PM That save from the 05-06 post season against the Rags where the Devils were up by alot in the third, Brodeur is out of the net for some reason, and Nylander shoots from the slot and Brodeur dives like a ****ing cat to save it, even though we were going to win anyway.
brylin18 08-22-2007, 02:27 PM There was a sequence a few years back where he stopped Lemieux on a breakaway and Jagr was there for the rebound and he stopped him too. That was pretty amazing.

I think that is mine too...I thought it was against Philly, but either way, he has his handle jammed up against the cage, and the player is whacking at the puck repeatedly right at the goal line. Marty never budged. Sick.

njdevscup30 08-22-2007, 04:29 PM Hmmm, there was one against the Rangers i think in msg some years back. I don't remember who had the chance for the rags but there was an odd man break and Brodeur made a good save to his left side on the first chance when challenging the shooter. The rebound bounced more towards the front of the goal and a Ranger was there to hit in the rebound, but Brodeur while on his back kinda turned over and made a great save with his stick while sprawled on the ground. Classic.

I can honestly remember reenacting it when I was a freshman in hs for my friends who said I was an obsessed devils fan...
I specifically remember one of the first games against the rags after holik went over when he made a post to post "roll" save. The roll is my favorite all time save, and it seems that marty has been doing it and the two pad stack more often then previously.
Dialamo 08-22-2007, 08:12 PM Question: when did Marty make $8M?
The max he ever made in a season was $6,891,103.

Hahahaha for some reason I found this really funny.
Devilsfanatic 10-05-2008, 11:00 PM Brodeur before this contract had signed a 5 year 40 million dollar contract. I'm 90% sure he had a contract that was 5 years 40 million. Anyways I have TWO favorite saves.
The first is the flying stick save he made on Sergei Fedorov at the Joe in Detroit. He stops the shot, rebound goes to Sergei and he shoots high stick side, Brodeur goes flying doing the splits and gets the puck with his stick.
The other was his sequence on Pavel Bure at the all-star game. Pav even tapped Brodeur on the pads afterwards to say great saves.

;) I don't know why that one site doesn't have him at 8. Maybe in the last year of his deal he was scheduled to make a lot so his contract was backloaded but then he renegotiated and got the 6 years 31.2 million deal and lost on that amount because of the lockout.
Devilswede 10-06-2008, 07:14 AM There's no footage of my favourite save, but it is the one on Sergei Fedorov's shot from the 96-97 season I think.
The Red Wings had a great passing play in the Devils zone, Marty was screened and deeked out on the play to his left. The puck went over to Fedorov who had a yawning net staring at him. Fedorov had the puck on his stick and just needed to wrist it in to score, but Marty threw himself over to his right and got his stick up on the puck just under the crossbar and made an outstanding stick-save on Fedorov's "easy goal".
The Devils won that game 2-0 and that save is the one save that I remember the most.

That is the one I picked too. I can't believe there's NO footage of it anywhere online. Makes it seem like I dreamed up the entire sequence.
Mr Bojanglez 10-06-2008, 09:59 AM Recent memory is the Danny Briere save. Especially being on his 500th win night.
That save on czerkawski was pretty unbelievable.
The one that sticks out in my mind was against Buffalo, game 7, 1994 playoffs against Mogilny. Its about halfway through (at 1:12).
FvpNVn-nXp8
Just watching that, and remembering the series, gives me anxiety... remembering the up and downs I felt. Hasek was so freakin good. That series alone gives him credit as one of the best "in prime" goalies in the NHL. Notice how he doesn't give up one "bad" goal. And Lemieux... ahhh Lemieux.
And for some stupid reason, with 2 minutes left and only up by a goal... the crowd was doing the wave. I was baffled.
