I believe we tried to trade his rights back to San Jose, but the trade was voided by the league for some reason.

The trade was contingent on him showing up to play which he did not - apparently there was some confusion as to when he'd come to the US to play and his team in Europe was playoff bound last spring and he chose to stay/play there. This little event may have burned any bridges for him to return to the NHL any time soon. He was making more in the USSR than he would have in the NHL!

I had thought his contact was up after last season and am trying to figure out his status.

Thank to all for the thoughts.

His contract isn't up. I believe he has a pending arbitration award that he must play out if he decides to come back to the NHL. This does not expire.

Correct - the amount is likely lower to what he's getting overseas. Still trying to determine his contract status overseas.

He's stated that he's not done with the NHL and would like to return at some point. Given his arbiration award (low $$) he'd probally come over at the deadline and hope for a high UFA contract that summer.
