Lou's Koolaid 08-18-2007, 10:26 AM This is just mindless stupidity going on here. Unless we could get back Joe Thorton or Lacavlier in return which won't happen. These rumors or thoughts are so friggin stupid. Gio is a homegrown Devil and a Lou favorite as he should be.
Does anybody remember what a clutch goal scorer this guy is? No D-man in this leauge except for someone like Pronger is worth such a trade.
wingmanpei 08-18-2007, 10:36 AM I don't understand why people have given up on Gionta. He may have had 25 goals lst year which down from 48 the previous year but he didn't play a full season either. Pro-rated he would have had 30+ goals last year, I would think that most teams and their fans would want a 30 goal scorer on their roster.
Lou's Koolaid 08-18-2007, 10:43 AM Plus he's got a knack for putting the puck in the net when our own is empty.

Juice?....or "Koolaid" ;)
Brooklyndevil 08-18-2007, 12:24 PM Sorry, I'm one of the stupid ones. However, I never adovacted trading Gio. Just stating that if Lou wants to add a center, I wouldn't be against my deal of Horcoff and Cogliano. We add a natural center and a young player who is supposed to be by all accounts another Gio. I also hear that the kid has great character. Now saying that, he's still a prospect and can turn out to be far from another Gionta and I'm quite pleased to go into the season with our current group of players. However, I will state again that I just have a feeling Lou isn't finished re-tooling.
I think hereīs none of us, who would like to see Gio go - unlike certain #5. Of course it would hurt to see a guy like Gio go, but it would be understandable.
Itīs just that if we want to improve for example our defense via trade, thereīs not too many guys to offer. Marty, Patty, White and Langs are out of the picture because of their no trade -clauses and maybe for some other reasons. I donīt think weīll see the day when Parise or Zajac is part of any deal either. I consider Pando and Madden also untouchable and it wouldnīt make too much sense to give up guys from our D-corps unless thereīs a package deal going.
So who does that leave us with, when looking at good trade value? I donīt seefor example Zubrus or Clarkson bringing us a replacement neither for Nieds nor Rafalski.
Those days when we got Nieuwendyk and Langs are behind - at least for now. 5-6 years ago we were loaded on every department, so trading was only needed when adding missing little parts, and not to fill in a hole, like now when we are missing a #1 d-man and maybe a #1 center.
And just to make it sure: I am not saying that I want to trade Gio or be happy if he was traded. Itīs just that thereīs not too many guys to offer if a major trade is forthcoming.
Parise 4 President 08-18-2007, 02:09 PM I hope Gio never leaves. I think he's the closest thing we've got to a real goal scorer since Almo's first tour of duty here.
Richer's Ghost 08-18-2007, 04:21 PM Well while I agree Gio shouldn't be the subject of any logical trade rumors, I only have to look back at the dishing of Arnott and Sykora during their run as the A-line and the top scorers in the NHL at the time... poof gone next year.
I hope nothing like that happens again...
Devils Mike 08-19-2007, 12:12 AM Gionta is our best goal scorer at the moment, why trade him?

Yeah. And we all remember the debacle of that next year . . .Stanley Cup Champions. What was Lou thinking?
Devilsfanatic 08-19-2007, 10:31 AM Gionta has been dealt along with Paul Martin, Nicklas Bergfors and a 2008 2nd round draft pick to the Atlanta Thrashers for Marian Hossa, Boris Valabik, and a 1st round draft pick in 09. I don't have any link to this right now, but it should be announced by Monday as the NHL office is closed and the teams just have to file the paper work.

DevsOwnYou 08-19-2007, 11:51 AM Gio is a bonafide sniper, you don' find them growing on trees in this league.
Gio stays here long term, unless Tampa wants him for Vinny.

Nice package :D:D Anyways i don't see Gio leaving either, he showed loyalty last year, and that's the most important thing for Lou.

No, he's not a sniper. He scores the vast majority of his goals by taking advantage of his extremely fast hands in and around the crease. His shot is OK, but it's not a sniper's shot.
And, as good as he is, I tend to think that the 48 goals was the exception, and his career will be more in the 30-35 goal range for each season. And yes, you trade him if you can get a better player (and they are out there) or one whose game fits more with your teams style (and I'm not saying that Gionta doesn't fit - but I'm not Lou, and if he feel differently I wouldn't argue with him)
