LACK OF OFFENSE
HAS DEVILS WEARY

By MARK EVERSON

"Sure it matters. It makes for a long, long year. Game-in and game-out, one-goal games," John Madden told The Post.

Great teams of yore have had nights of magic, when they've blown opponents away with superiority and artistry.

"The last time was 9-0 against the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2001. I had four and Randy McKay had four," Madden recalled.

The Devils pile up points instead, except when their offense-by-accident style stumbles, as it has lately. As they visit the Predators here tonight (8:30, MSG, WABC), they have won only once in their last five. They have scored 10 total goals in those five, the lone victory (1-1-2-1) coming the only time they scored more than two (three) against woeful Pittsburgh.

"Some teams create five or six chances and three go in. We create 10, and maybe one or two go in. Maybe none. I don't have an answer for it," Madden said. "It's always 30 shots, 10-12 chances, and two goals. Even a team like Buffalo [a 7-1 triumph over Washington Wednesday] has one [explosion] once in a while."

Others might think the Devils would be world-beaters with a play-making right-handed center, a goal-scoring winger, and one more defenseman. It's a long wish list for Lou Lamoriello, sometimes called "Do Little Lou" here. But the chance for a second straight Cup and fourth in 10 years is one that he should pursue aggressively, and unrelentingly. If he doesn't bring it in, the fault will be his, because the evidence was there.

Am I the only one that thinks Mark Everson hates Lou? Three cups and he calls him "Do Little Lou", what an egotistic blowhard he must be to suggest on what Lou should do. I still say he's a pissed off Ranger fan forced to cover the Devils.

Looks like he couldn't resist the urge to let a little bit of personal feelings seep into the tail end of this one, although to Everson's credit, its worth noting that John Madden did say some of the same things in the playoffs when he cautioned that all the repeated line matching was stifling the Devils offense a bit and that all the one goal wins and losses in the regular season were extremely tiring and stressful to the whole team. Brodeur will never admit this as I'm sure he likes, admires, and appreciates most every teammate he has, but the Devils do need more goal scoring and it would likely mean sending someone good packing just to shore up this deficiency if Suglobov isn't yet ready for the NHL. I'm not going to change my profile to something like SwedishBoltFans that says "6-5 A good score" and I'm certainly no advocate of goal scoring always equating more exciting by itself, but its obvious all these recent one goal losses are troublesome. Question is whether it will come from within or whether LL will address this before or at the trade deadline. This is the double edged sword we have to contend with when you don't want to see chemistry disrupted on a team that has a ton of character.

The way I see it there really isn't really going to be all that much out there come deadline, maybe Bondra, Bure or Satan but that's about it, and I still think our primary need is for a center but there is even less of them that are going to be avaliable than wingers, and I think that's were not grabbing Comrie might haunt us. I totally agree we need more "O" but I just don't know where we will get it from. There is no real Mogilny, Thachuk or Amonte type players that teams are going to look to get rid of this year. I do think Suglobov will get a shot with the Devs before the deadline, so maybe he can help out. But we very well might be stuck with what we got unless like you said we throw somebody good in a package to get a proven "O" man.

That whole Comrie deal still makes me a pretty bitter fan. Would have loved seeing him as a Devil.

What kills me is they didn't even need him, but I just saw your post on Esche got pulled tonight so there goaltending is still a problem........again.

I would have been a huge fan of a Comrie to NJ deal but giving up a prospect as good or better than Woywitka and then some would have been pretty hard to swallow. I know Comrie is a proven 60 point guy and he would have filled a hole at center for us but the price was pretty high considering...

I say, bring me Mike Ricci (UFA at season's end) and I'll be a happy man.
