THIS AND THAT: Igor Larionov (knee) did not skate at practice yesterday. Larionov may miss his second straight game tonight. . . . Rasmussen practiced again yesterday after sitting out Thursday night's game against the Washington Capitals. He said his return to action will depend on whether he can be physical. . . . Paul Martin and Mike Rupp attended practice but did not hit the ice. Both said they were just squeezing in a day of rest. . . . Burns said earlier in the week that he did not plan on starting backup goalie Ari Ahonen during this two-game trip. But with Schwab back on injured reserve, Burns said yesterday he may have to give Ahonen his first career start soon. "I'm going to have to call on someone sooner or later," Burns said. The Devils play four games in six nights next week. Burns also suggested Schwab might need to play some games in Albany to get work in before returning.

Ahonen isn't wishing for anything to happen to Brodeur, but he would like to make his NHL debut.
"Of course. That's been the one thing I've been dreaming about since I started playing hockey," said Ahonen, the 22-year-old Finn whom the Devils drafted first (27th overall) in 1999.
"If Marty keeps playing like this, there's not much ice time for anybody. He's the best goalie in the league. But if I get a chance, I'll be ready."
The major question is whether general manager Lou Lamoriello believes Schwab can fully overcome his injury or whether he is likely to suffer another setback after the March 9 trade deadline.
"We've always had that veteran backup, whether it was Chris Terreri, Beezer (John Vanbiesbrouck) or Corey Schwab," Scott Gomez said. "An injury (to Brodeur) is something you hope doesn't happen, but obviously it could happen at any time. From what we've seen, Ari or Scott could step in.
rtafts 01-03-2004, 01:10 PM Let's hope Burns keeps him on the bench until the 10th, when they play the Leafs, I'm goin'. :D

Schwab wouldn't clear waivers. If New Jersey tries to send him to Albany it's basically making Ahonen the permanent backup in NJ.
Think there are teams in the NHL that would love to get a backup as cheap and reliable as Schwab has proven to be? The man's GAA is 0.48, sv% of 0.980!
If Schwab is assigned to Albany today, he wears a Flames or Blackhawks jersey by the end of the week.

If Schwab accepts a 14-day conditioning assignment, I don't think he has to clear waivers.

Exactly.

Why would Calgary want Shwabby, they are doing fine with Kiprusov, and Mclennan......And as far as Chicago is conserned Goaltending is not their problem

Calgary was happy with Kiprusoff. But now, Kiprusoff is injured, and looks to be injured longer-term than Schwab. Those were two examples I pulled out of a hat due to injuries, there are others (Carolina, for instance, can't be happy with winless Storr). I hold that Schwab wouldn't clear waivers (If he's valuable enough that the Devils should keep him, some other team wants him... unless you hold that every other team already has a better backup, in which case why are the Devils keeping the worst backup in the NHL?).
Then again, the NHL's goalie situiation is a little loopy. A goalie who went exposed and unclaimed in the waiver draft just scored his third shutout in a week this afternoon.
The CBA (http://letsgopens.com/nhl_cba.php?id=13) is riddled with legalese, so something may be slipping my mind, but my reading of it is that the player can't be sent 'conditioning' without waivers unless he has both played fewer than 10 games and been on the roster for fewer than 30 days since his last minor-league recall or the waiver draft. Since Schwab has been on the NHL roster for more than 30 days since the waiver draft, he would have to be placed on old-fashioned waivers to be reassigned to Albany.

Kiprusoff went down with the same injury Turek suffered early in the season. They're now relying on McLennan and a young guy who's name I forget.
Chicago is still without Thibault if I'm not mistaken. Schwab would be an upgrade over Michael Leighton. Trust me.
Tao Jones 01-04-2004, 08:10 PM Schwabby is a Group III at the end of the season. Unless he is offered a starting position next year, I think he would come back to NJ after the CBA is resolved. Claiming him now with his groin problems would be risky.

Assuming there's a waiver draft before play next begins (post-CBA-resolution), and assuming waiver rules are effectively the same as they are now, the Devils won't be able to sign and retain Schwab anyways if they have any hope of developing Ahonen. Ahonen becomes waiver-eligible next fall. IE, the Devils would only be able to keep two of Brodeur, Ahonen, and Schwab.

Good point. I didn't consider that scenario. Seems like the Devils are priming Ahonen for the big show with the interview he had with Chico in Nashville. He wants to play. If Schwab continues to have injury problems, Brodeur will not get the rest he needs to be sharp for the post-season.
