Lou's Koolaid 07-08-2007, 05:10 PM We only play them twice at home but, we have a little rivalry with Toronto and their fans. With that being said we would chant 67' toward them the laughs last cup year. This is also the year of the rioting that took place in Newark. So that might feel a little strange and offencive to some to say the least.

I believe Cliff Fletcher. It's not like they were going to draft anybody good anyways.. their draft record is about as good as the president's. ;)

with all do respect i couldnt disagree more, now more than ever we need to be displaying our hate of the rangers and there fans.
in fact i think we should alterneate between "rangers suck" and "gomez blows"
every time we get the chance whether we are playing the rangers or the panthers
but when we play the rags for the first time in our new rink we need to be absoultey nonstop loud.
i unfortunitly will not have the privalage to attend but we all know how man rangers fans there will be.......we have to drown all of them out

forceten 07-08-2007, 06:54 PM Being honest and trying not to convey judgement - just personal feeling here -- I absolutely loathe it. It makes my skin crawl. It makes me so mad that people who like/love it don't realize how much it legitimizes the idea that we have an inferiority (see: Mets fan) complex. Plus it gives them fodder to poke fun at our intelligence in general.
It's unnecessary. Etc.
I hate it, and wish it would stop.. and I think the majority, if they really stopped and waxed philosophical - really thought about it - they'd agree.
JMHO.
Devils_Fanatic30 07-08-2007, 06:56 PM I was at the Devils vs Buffalo game last year in NJ when we went down 3-0 and came back 3-2 with 30 seconds left and they were doing the Rangers suck chant and my buddy who is a Buffalo fan was like *** don't they know they are playing the Sabres .....
It's was a bit embarrassing:biglaugh:

I remember when that trade happened, at the time people thought that Lou should have gotten 10-20 years in prison for that highway robbery. I believe that pick was used to take Scott Niedermayer 3rd overall.

Sportacus 07-08-2007, 10:17 PM As a Leaf Fan, I think the '67 stuff has been overdone by everybody, especially Montreal. After 40 years, it becomes less bothersome, and more like "hey look, that idiot thinks we don't know when our last cup was". I don't really know (aside from a pretty intense rivalry) what things are like between you guys and NYR though.

Thank you. I'm going to say something here that I may get bashed for, but I hope you hear me out. In my pre-mommy days, I attended Flyers/Devils games at CAA as frequently as I could--never heard that chant. Then, in the late 90's my daughter came, money was tighter and I just didn't get over there for quite some time. So in April of 2006, I attended two Flyers-Devils games there in like five nights. So I'm sitting, watching my Flyers lose (as usual when I attend) and what do I hear but the whistle and the "Rangers Suck" thing--not just once or twice, but dozens and dozens of times/game. All I could think of was, "you're playing your biggest rival of the last decade, you're winning, we're ahead of you in the standings, but you're clawing your way to the top and all you can think about is the Rangers?" I thought it made the fan base come across as unknowledgeable and quite frankly, a bit obsessed..................Just one girl's opinion...Flame on...............

I'm going to have to disagree with you. A "Rangers Suck" chant is a good choice at all times, whether it be in the situation you described, or on a city bus, or at your aunt's funeral, or hell, even during sex.
It's exchanges like this one (http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=399096) between me and Inferno that make me feel as such.

Doctor, do you honestly think Flyers fans would chant "Rangers Suck" while playing the Devils at Wachovia?? C'mon, it comes off as stupid. However, I am all for it when actually playing the Rangers....I'll try to find your posts on their board.

LOL. Trying to avoid going to their board, out of respect for my sanity, but got sucked into that way stupid poll of theirs linked above... And with our board discussing freakin' Pat Quinn and fights in the crowd from days gone by... I am utterly bored by all our active threads here in Devils-land.
Regarding the original point of this thread... Been to near every Devils home game in recent years and simply do not remember EVER hearing the "1967" chant at Devils/Leafs games (which is the year of my birth... Just turned 40 last week... Ouch!) And I doubt anyone would be offended if we did chant that in Newark, however Habs-centric that chant really is, as that riot was 40 years ago...
And also regarding our chant du jour, "Rangers Suck", yes it is juvenile... And I have never been so proud as when my 6 year old Lil-Devils fan joined in on his own at a game... And carried it on in the car... At home... At every opportunity since... Laughing his *** off...
Brings out the silly kid in all of us.
(However, glad he has yet to pick up the lesser known "And the Flyers Blow" portion of said chant...;))

I find this hard to believe, as the Rangers Suck chant was rocking the arena during Game 6 of the 1995 ECF against the Flyers.
The second half of the chant is absolutely disgusting and should not be shouted in a public place. I can explain "Rangers Suck" to my kid as saying that they "stink". Hard to explain the other one.

+1. A little too PG-13 for six year olds (like my own...)
Fighter of Foo 07-09-2007, 12:36 PM yeah, if you're 12 years old.
Ugh... that reminds me of last season when this special needs (not Rob Niedermayer) kid was two rows in front of me, and would constantly do the "duh-duh-duh-duh-dat" and "rangers suck" by himself shouting at the top of his lungs, as well as "Let's go Devils, RANGERS SUCK!!" every time the opponents touched the puck. My lord, I wish they still served beer in containers w/ some heft to them after the first game w/ that kid there. He was never there when they played the Rangers, but he kept w/ the chanting regardless.
Sure the Rangers Suck chant can be fun, if done occasionally, as in once per game at most. Other than that, it's just lame.
None Shall Pass 07-09-2007, 12:39 PM Sorry in advance for the vulgarity, but, isn't it "Rangers suck, Flyers swallow"?
Anyway, one of the best things about going to your team's game is that you show your support while having fun. What better way to do it than to demean your two biggest rivals with 10,000+ chanting along with you?
I mean, when we were playing at the swamp, that OLE song by the Bouncing Souls would come on everytime we scored. The lyrics later in the song go, "Win or lose, we're having fun. We won't quit until we're done. We've got heart when we play. We'll take you on anyday!"
That's our team! We have a lot of heart and, like everybody in NJ that I know, a lot of pride in who we are and where we're from. We hockey fans LOVE our Devils. And either way, we have fun at the games or just watching them on TV. The chants are awesome, they're solidarity and support for our team.
I guess the best example is that my girlfriend is from Cincinnati, and I'm from the Jersey Shore. We go to school together. Anyway, I took her to a Devils-Flyers game last semester. I made her wear Devils horns and hold a little pitchfork, it was adorable. She had so much fun because of the chants and the pride we have in the stands, not to mention the play on the ice, she's actually a full-blown Devils fan now.
So I say keep the chant anytime. We hate our rivals, so say it. Just my two pennies anyway.

Its great to do the chant 20 times if you only go to one game. But try going to 20 games and you are talking about 400 times. I love that chant, but it is overdone.
Of course if you're girlfriend loves yelling "Flyers swallow", well, then I guess we know why she is your girlfriend.
Lou's Koolaid 07-09-2007, 08:40 PM Well back in the CAA days in sec 217 we would start about three per game on ave.
It will be like this also in sec 210 at the Rock.

Best ever.Heres a classic for you during the 03 cup run there was a Ranger fan who had tickets to all the playoffs. He was wearing his jersey to the games and was an easy target. He was also very chubby so we chanted "eat a salad" "eat a salad" not very nice but funny.:biglaugh:

Actually, they kind of did have an inferiority complex with Potvin. Rags hadn't won a Cup since 19-freaking-40 and then in the late 70s-early 80s, in come the upstart Islanders who start dominating the hapless Rangers.

Who is going to be offended about an obscure reference to a 40 year old riot? I mean, c'mon. Plus, I doubt that many people would hear "67" chanted at a hockey game in 2007, and automatically make that jump. You might be the only person this has occured to.
feerlessleadr 07-10-2007, 09:44 AM Actually, they kind of did have an inferiority complex with Potvin. Rags hadn't won a Cup since 19-freaking-40 and then in the late 70s-early 80s, in come the upstart Islanders who start dominating the hapless Rangers.
thank you for proving my point...why is it that they DID have one when they still do the chant, shouldnt it be that they HAVE one....and yet us devils fans must have an inferiority complex because we still do the chant
just seems like a double standard to me
Midnight85 07-10-2007, 01:07 PM With the Rangers and Potvin, I think its less of an inferiority complex, more of blind hatred of one player over Nillson's broken ankle. The four ensuing cups of course had something to do with its continuation. And the fact that Potvin did everything possible to exsapserate it, he loved it.
He even said himself "I always thought they were saying 'Potvin's Cups'.
Potvin sucks is a reminder of hockey of old and the way the Garden as a whole used to be.
