HFBoards pickup game?

This was discussed briefly in the "Where are you from?" thread a few months ago. Since its the summer and most of us are back in lovely NJ, would anyone be interested in participating in a pickup game of the people who post here? I figure the rink at Woodbridge is the best bet to draw posters from all over the state, and ice time should be relatively cheap there. I'm pretty sure they have an adult league that uses the game slots on the weekends, so perhaps this could be a week night thing. Anyway, who's interested?

And if anyone has an open roster spot for a college kid who departs for Washington DC on August 20th, let me know!

The rec center or the roller rinks in Fords Park?

Rec center.

Sorry, to clarify, I meant a game on ice

Ah damn, well it's been a while (few months) since I've skated there but I should probably warn you that when I went it was probably the worst ice I've ever been on in my entire life.

That accolade will always be held by MSG. Pond ice is better than the muck they call ice there. I think that was when the compressor failed and the "ice" was more paint than ice.

haha well when I went the ice was hard as ****...it was almost as if it was "too cold" which might not make sense but it was so hard you couldn't get an edge in the ice. Plus it was pathetically uneven. So i guess maybe it's the opposite of MSG. haha

I play there alot these days, and it really depends on who cuts the ice over a given week.

But I'm down for a pickup game at a Woodbridge Community Rec Center.

Yeah I might have just caught a bad day, but man, it was bad...I mean sure at that point it had been years since I've skated but even people that were clearly good at skating were busting their ***** because you just couldn't get the edge into the ice.

It was also during a real, real, cold day back in February and the room temperature itself was probably about 20 degrees. So maybe that contributed to the unevenness of the ice.

Why Woodbridge? Where are most people here from/or will be coming from?

I'm down with it, and I could probably get one of our lurkers to play too...

I'd prefer inline (with puck, of course) since I'm more used to it (and it'd be easier to get a convenient time), but whatever..

I play in a league in Edison.. not a terrible rink.

I think for this to work, we might have to decide what type of hockey we'll play... then decide on location.

1. Ice Hockey
2. Inline (indoor) Hockey
3. Inline (outdoor) Hockey
4. Dek Hockey (foot)

Make a poll please!

I'd prefer inline - most of my equipment is geared for it. But to clarify - I mean real inline - on sportcourt or similar hockey surface that allows you to use a puck and all real equipment.. so its real hockey. Not a wood floor or asphalt (outdoor) or using a _ball_.. ew.

If its Edison or North I could do.. but Edison's already enough of a haul. Where is most everyone located? North or South NJ?

My vote is for ice hockey. If we play ice hockey, I'll be a goalie, but I'd rather not play goalie if we do roller hockey or street hockey (too hot)

Edit: Woodbridge works for me too.

1. Where in Woodbridge

2. When?

I suggested the rink at the Woodbridge Community Center, but that can be changed based on what's easiest for the majority of people to get to, and how expensive the ice is.

As for when, I say whenever we can get the most people, probably the first week of August or so.

I also added a poll to decide what we're going to play on the main Devils board.

An option for ice - a place where I've done pickup ice before - is Floyd Hall Arena at Montclair State U. There are two rinks there and usually you can get a 10pm-12am slot.. and, it's relatively inexpensive, and the facility is not that old, so it's nice.

We'll go there once the Ranger posters on HF get the same idea and we have our own little challenge cup ;)

Aren't those slots used for open hockey though?

Sometimes. But we've rented the rink in groups of like 20 guys too. It depends on what times are available.

Great idea, I'm up for anything north of Princeton, though I'd prefer the northern part of the state (West Orange/Montclair/Morristown etc.)

I think we'll also need a poll for which day of the week is best for people as well. For example - I play in a beer league in Hackensack on Tuesday nights so that would be tough to do.

Also, whoever organizes it is going to have to front the money and that can be $$$$$.

How far north are we talking? Princeton is sort of a hike for me I think, I'm by Bridgewater.

I've got no problem fronting the money for something in the Central Jersey area, but I certainly think that whoever plays should put in their portion of the icetime (aka, the more people who do this, the cheaper it is for all of us!)

I think the best available rinks for all of us are Woodbridge, Staten Island, Bridgewater, South Brunswick, Dunellen, or Union, so far. A Central Jersey location ensures that we draw posters all around the state, and a portion of posters from the city.

As for goalies, I know at least 1 poster here who patrols the crease.

Definitely; didn't mean to imply that the organizer should have to pay for it, just front the money. I play in Union a lot, in fact, I'll probably play there tonight. The ice is usually crappy, though better than it used to be, but it's easy to get ice time. Union's also good for accessibility because it's on 22 just off the Pkwy. But like I said, I'm up for anything north of Princeton.

If we play ice, I'll def play goalie, but not for roller. It's too hot and it's totally different from ice.

I can basically play on any weeknight except for two or three during the summer, and it definitely would be cool just having a hour or hour and a half slot for just a pickup game. And the more ppl we get the less it would cost each person.

The farthest north for me would probably be Montclair, anything north of that is not too good.

Sure, having real refs would be a plus, especially if this evolves into a Devils vs. Rangers fans game.

I'm certified for ice and inline and I know 3 others that would probably do it as well. So we could actually have 2 refs and 2 linesmen. Just send me a pm when you have a date.

I live in Va. & would like to play. Typically it's going to be $15 to get a slot at a rink.
Most everybody should be USA hockey. I'm coming into NJ the weekend of the 28th for birthday paerty. There is a 3 rink complex in Wall NJ that would be another place to play. Used to be called American Hockey.

Before any other decisions are made a rink should really be decided upon, then people can decide whether they want to travel the distance.

Yep, that's the one. It might be a bit west for everyone though. I also agree with Mission in that we should choose a rink next. Seems like an ice game has the best support so far.

If it's ice...I might get in on it, if it's friendly enough (ie - don't jump down anyone's throat if/when they make a bone-headed play).
I live in Morristown, but I usually play adult open hockey at Codey (W Orange) on Thursday and Saturday. But I've skated at Wodbridge, as well.
