Questions for Rimer & Ricordati, 12-2 on theFan this week

Jeff Rimer is back from medical leave and he's subbing for Spielman this week on www.1460thefan.com, NOON to 2pm, with Ricordati.

Would be great to get them talking more about hockey, and they do take callers and email.

Here are a few questions I'd like discussed.

Which draft prospects are the Jackets zeroing in on?
Under what circumstances might the Jackets trade their first round?
What are some of the players doing in the off season?
What is the status of Pascal?
Who's going to be running the Draft Pick for the Jackets? Clark? Hitch?

I'd ask Rimer who he thinks would be the better replacement for him, John Buccigross or Barry Melrose.

I'd ask about Pazzy.

It'd also be interesting to find out how the players are spending the offseason. Who's working out, who's goofing off...

Not much CBJ talk yet. Rimmer has dropped a few "NBA ratings down 29% for game 2" nuggets in there. Of course, pin drops from Ricordoti about that subject.

That and Rimmer got a text from his son Josh who said that Sundin has signed a 1 year deal worth 5.5 mil -- yipppee -- go Toronto.. To his credit, even Rimmer said who cares to that one.

Oh and one other thing, Bettman will be on later this week but they didn't announce which day. Apparently Ricordoti wanted Rims to tell him he'll be asking difficult questions. Let me guess, about TV ratings?

Rims being back in action is comforting.

I used to enjoy Spielman on Sports, but I find Ricordati really irritating nowadays. It seems all too often, he just talks because he likes to hear his own voice(which is a great characteristic to being a radio personality, but still).

Hopefully there's a spike in "viewership" for 1460 this week and they take notice. Maybe we should send more notes the the Program Director letting him know we want more hockey. Especially leading up to the Draft.

Spielman on Sports IS JUST SO PREACHY now. every day they go on and on about moral consequences, or how does this reflect on soceity, or street drugs are bad, or how only evil people drink and drive, or on and on.

and the funny thing is, i agree with both of them in principle on most things. i just make the mistake of tuning into a sports station to hear sports talk

Rims brought up the dip in NBA ratings again towards the end of the show and again, Ricordoti tries to change the subject into the whole "why are you bringing this up Rims....to please your NHL friends?" type nonsense..

The double standard is rediculous and so transparent.

Kudos to Rims for not letting it slide though....and saying something to effect that alot of NHL fans are tired of their bashing of the league and its ratings last week.

06-12-2007, 02:12 PM
Glad to here Rims is back into the mix.

I was kind curious how things like sportbars and arena's fit into things like the ratings. I would imagine it fairly equalized in sporting events, but I don't think 14k poeple from Cleveland showed up to the arena to watch an episode of Heroe's. That doesn't even include the number of people across the country that show up in sports bars to watch these type of events.

Sorry if it's been discussed before, but do things like that get taken into account? If they can't account for it, it's pretty hard to compare a playoff game to an episode of CSI Toledo.

I don't think the NBA numbers mean anything honestly.

Everyboy knows the the ONLY exciting time of a basketball game is the last 5 minutes of the 4th quarter, and the 45 minutes it takes to play it.

Im sure there were millions who watched the Sopranos, flipped on the game for a few seconds, saw the score, knew it wasn't going to be exciting, and turned it off.

Ratings is a crutch the hockey-ignorant sports media lean on when they feel they have to lower themselves to address the sport.
Folks like Ricordati and Mike & Mike (as another example) get their message through loud and clear that they have no desire to learn more about the sport and/or discuss any other topic -- positive or negative -- about it (save for the occasional violence debate).
They don’t respect me as a listner and, on this topic, I give them zero credrence as professionals. They’re jokes.
Say what you will about Rimmer, but he doesn’t piss on his audience.

To offer a contrast, listen to Jim Rome. He’ll bag on the ratings to get laughs as much as anyone, but when you listen to him talk about the sport (good and bad), it is clear that he knows it, respects and respects the audience that knows and loves it.

It is the difference between your friend tossing an insult your way and a total stranger doing the same.

Kallio, that's a good point. I agree with pretty much everything you said.

Suggestion for everyone:

Download the .mp3 version of Spielman on Sports everyday this week after it's put up(usually 10-15 minutes after the hour). We need to get the message across that we'd want to hear people talk about hockey.

http://www.1460thefan.com/tf.php?story=radiohio/1460thefan/2004newfan/on-demand-listening.php&section=demand

If they get a considerable spike in downloads when Rimer(and Bettman) are on, they'll have to take notice.

I’m definitely cool with the plan.

But as a point of clarification, I’m not really even arguing for more hockey coverage (though I’d certainly welcome it). I want coverage when it warrants it, which being that there is an NHL team in town, isn’t quite as much as I’d like. And I’d like to have the discussion led by someone who knows and at least somewhat cares about the topic.

My bigger issue is that if all the talking head on TV or the radio is going to do is crack on hockey about its ratings, I’d rather they just close their traps and switch gears back to breaking down the 5th pass Brady Quinn threw on day 4 of mini-camp or why a 17-year-old kid changing his mind about attending OSU is the end of the world.
In a sad way, I guess I’m actually advocating for LESS hockey coverage.

That is all I ask from the sports media.

yes but if you have the Dish Network, Directv, or Insight, the chanel is buried somewhere up high in the 200+ range. Insight only offers it in the Digital cable package. I'm not sure about Time Warner but WOW offers it on basic cable.

I didn't have digital cable this year and I live in an insight area so I barely got to watch any non-CBJ games all year.

I actually don’t mind Ricordati too much on non-hockey topics.
Though since the reemergence of Jim Rome, I’ll admit I don’t listen to the Spielman show nearly as much as I used too.

I think his decison to embrace the broken-record, hockey-ignorant attitude exhibited by the ESPN personalities I’m sure he one day aspires to be is just sad.

Ricordati and Rimer are like battlebots on the air. Pretty good schtick.
It's obvious that Ricordati is a baseball fan, and doesn't have much to say about hockey. He's been saying the same thing for three days.

The Bettman interview was interesting. He spun the attd and revenue income against the tv ratings. Said they've been doing deals with Joost and youtube and Google and other online stuff. Bettman said Versus is in 8 million more homes this year, and says the NHL is Versus' prime property ...giving the NHL their full attention. Likes that Versus is 'remaking' their network. Says ESPN guys hammer NHL all the time.

Rimer asked him if they were going to change the nets. Bettman said it's a backburner issue. "It's out there in the distance."

After the interview Ricordati went right back to "tv ratings bad" and "NHL can't market." Rimer infused some sanity. Wish Ricordati would actually talk hockey instead of just bash it. Ricordati BASHED Red's fans, Adam Dunn, and the Cavaliers. That schtick gets old.

If the NHL is Versus "prime property" then why did they delay the playing of the NHL awards to show some old boxing matches and moved it at the last minute to 11pm when absolutely nobody is watching and those that did set their tivo or vcr's got 2 hours of boxing instead of the NHL awards. Versus is killing the NHL. Bettman needs to step down as he clearly doesn't have a good grasp on marketing the NHL.

Riccordati is an ass, he bashed the NHL finals ratings for days and hasn't attacked the NBA ratings with the same passion as he did the NHL. NBA ratings are down just as much and are unwatchable, thankfully we won't have to see or hear about them anymore after tonight. At least the NHL product on the ice is entertaining and you can enjoy the entire game and not just the last 5 minutes.

The cavs are probably the 5th best team in basketball as they would have been run by most of the west the same way the Spurs ran them. Pistons would have put up a much better fight. NBA stinks.

Versus was getting the feed from CBC and they were airing it on a delay at 8pm (which they didn't seem to tell Versus until the last minute) and it was running until 10pm. Versus had live boxing scheduled at 9pm and thus couldn't air it until 11pm.

Also, Riccordati is a Chicago guy so he will always put down anything related to Ohio other than the Buckeyes (he has warmed up to the Tribe though since he was at spring training). It's too bad Rimer can't be on with Hooley because he is very open to everything and seems to be very pro any Ohio sporting team.
