how about this idea (brought up on another board)

Parise Gomez Gionta what a killer line
Too much pure offense on one line, I'd rather see

Pandolfo Gomez Gionta

this will help the +/-, and finally Pando gets the green light to go offensive!
I agree with trying to put Pando on a scoring line. Give him a chance to thrive both offensively and defensively. Plus it would give us more balance which is what we need. Teams knew the only line that was going to play "shutdown" was the Madden line.

my response to this topic:

yea honestly i wouldnt really mind that bc i think pando could keep up with those two if he is given the green light. so this is wat i think would be nice in terms of offensive lines (ill worry about the defense another time soon ;) )

Pandolfo-Gomez/Free Agent-Gionta (well this would give the devils a line that could be very good offensively (yes, with pando who i believe could strive under this) and would be defensively responsible)
Parise-Zajac-Clarkson (i believe these 3 played together b4 and seemed to gel pretty good and they would be great on cycle and clarkson could provide physical presence)
Elias-Madden-Langenbrunner (would give devils a line with 3 big bodies who will hit and play physical, certainly will not be pushed around, is very defensively responsible, with lots of speed and potential to be dangerous on offense)
Brylin-Viuhkola-Pelley/Rasmussen (gives devils a fourth line who can play 8-10 mins or so, is defensively responsible, and can even chip in a few goals maybe with pelley and rassy both getting time on that line, only concern is whether or not pelley can be effective physically and hitting)

i honestly never thought of this until i saw that post, and i absolutely love the balance in these lines actually...........wats everyone else think??

then someone questioned why i had rassy in here and this is wat i said:

the only reason i really would take rassy would be to get a physical presence on that line and a guy who is always throwing hits every time he steps on the ice, idk i would at least wanna have a forth line that could be physical, kinda like the sens fourth line of schubert-mcammond-saprykin, one guy throwing his weight around but yet being able to provide some offense and not be a liability and other 2 guys are more offensive and scorers. but the problem is, yes, pelley may throw his weight around, but is it effective as a result of him not being very big?? i mean i only watched him play in one game i believe and didnt really pay attention to him (i cant really watch many devils games anyways besides national broadcast, games against the sabres, games against the leafs on saturday nights, and playoff games). i mean for those of you that did, was pelley effective physically or did he just kinda throw hits but not really be considered "physicallity". like with rassy we know that he can hit hard and hits a lot. does pelley do the same thing??? cuz if he does then id say fine, keep him in always and just let rassy walk or keep him as a 13th forward in case of injury.

----wat does everyone here think??? one question id have would be if gomez doesnt return (which hes prolly not gonna), who could devils get to sign to play center on that line.......maybe someone like handzus or something who wouldnt cost as much??

I'd rather move Parise to the fourth line than have Pandolfo on the first line. He belongs on the checking line with Madden. Langenbrunner would fit well with them, but Elias is a first liner. It wouldn't be worth it to put him on that line with the money he's making.

but they would all be considered "scoring lines" (at least the top 3) and would all get good amounts of icetime as well as the fourth line getting like 10 mins. no more match up garbage with the forwards, leave that to the defense to matchup with the oppositions best line.

I'm not paying Elias all that money to go play distributor wing for two guys who won't, or can't get him the puck. We're going back to him playing with McKay and Bobby again, there.

The only difference between this role you give him and the one Julien did last year,
is that he won't have to cover up for the center defensively. It's not going to be productive.

Pando may have been a great scorer in college, but now he is so used to being used in a strict defensive role.....let's just leave him there.

Pandolfo should not see action in the top 6...period.

I'm not particularly fond of the thought of moving Elias to center, but if that's what it comes to, I wouldn't mind seeing:

Parise-Elias-Gionta
Clarkson-Zajac-Langenbrunner
Pandolfo-Madden-Brylin
Rassmussen-Viuhkola?-Pelley

That seems like a weak team to me, though, especially since we didn't make it past the 2nd round with the team we have now.

or, if we manage to effectively replace Gomez at center:

Elias/Parise-Free Agent-Gionta
Parise/Elias-Zajac-Langenbrunner
Pandolfo-Madden-Brylin
Rassmussen-Viuhkola-Clarkson

Our season next year rests, in my opinion, on the season that Elias has. He needs to carry this offense like he did when he came back in 05-06. It largely depends on who his center is, but it's obvious that he wasn't at his best last year and his linemates suffered a bit from it as well.

Also, we need a 4th line like Ottawa has. They can play more minutes and contribute. We obviously shouldn't expect a goal a game from them, but I think that if we pair Rasmussen or Rupp with this Viuhkola guy and Clarkson, that could be a fourth line that we know can contribute.

pandolfo on the #1 line? why the hell would we do that? he just came off his best defensive season of his career

and he doesnt exactly have the best scorer's touch ive ever seen...

I agree very much that a lot depends on the season Elias has. I think he will hit 32 goals this year and 45 assists.

Last season, I think he didn't really focus a lot on scoring himself because he was afraid of looking selfish, and not a team player, so he would always hesitite before shooting, then look to pass. It was almost like he tried to just oversee the play around him rather then get in there and take charge himself. He has to realize that Stevens was a defensive D-man, so he did not actively take part in the offense much. Elias is expected to do the opposite.

I think we should mix everyone up a little, let them all play different positions and different lines and see if any special chemistry develops. Assuming someone is good where they are is ignorant because you never know what hidden potential there is.

Plus with all the line matching, we may benefit from having mutable lines that can adapt to any situation. What we really needed in the playoffs.

This is what i wanna see for devils lines next year.....

Elias-Gomer/free agent-Gionta
Parise-Zajac-Clarkson
Pandolfo-Madden-Langenbrunner
Cam-Viuhkola-Brylin

reason being....first line, if gomer leaves we replace him(hopefully) and we still have a big scoring threat from them, second line is my pipe dream for next season, i think the grit that clarkson brings to the game, and the little bit of a scoring touch he showed while up with the big club last season will go very well with the UND boys, i can see that being the best young line in the league next year. who is going to argue that pando and mad dog's line always worked best with jamie on it? And for the 4th line, brylin brings the experience and offensive ability to the line, while i dont know much about viuhkola i'd assume that he will be a solid fourth liner, and an upgrade over what we had last season (i hope) and comeon people, cam should be in this line up, he brings the fear and intimidation factor that guys like rupp and rass could only have dreamed of bringin to this team last season

Which is why, if Gomez leaves, I'd like to see Sykora back in a Devils jersey. He and Elias have great chemistry, and if Gionta has another season like last season, they could be pretty hard to stop.
