Is there a Rutgers Devils Fan Club? Sarge18 06-08-2007, 04:54 AM I'm a member. I think it's worth it. It has it's pluses and minuses. It's $20 a year to join. They have monthly meetings that are free to attend and they usually have a guest speaker. Guest speakers in the past have included Lou, Mike Emerick, Chico, Stan Fischler, Gomez, Pando, Jeff Vanderbeek, various hockey reporters from various papers, etc.. The trips can be pretty good. I haven't been on one in a while but have always had a good time and it's nice because you don't have to do anything but show up. They take care of tickets, transportation, lodging, etc. The last trip I went on was in 2001 and it was to Buffalo and Toronto. It was an awesome trip. We spent some time in Niagara Falls, went to the game in Buffalo, went to Toronto for 2 nights, had hall of fame passes and a gondola suite in the Air Canada Centre with an all you can eat buffet. They even gave us free tickets to a Raptor game. I think this trip ran me a little over $300 for a night in Buffalo and two nights in a first class hotel in Toronto that the Avalanche were staying in when we got there, 2 games, hall of fame passes, and transportation. The minuses? The members. Just think, there are people that like Star Trek, and then there are the ones that go to meetings and conventions and live and breathe Star Trek 24/7. Well the same goes for the Devils. The Fan Club has some interesting members, to say the least. It can be a little tough being on a bus with them for 8 hours but they can be ignored. The other annoying ones are the old timers that have been there since 1982 and are pushing 100 that do nothing but whine and complain about everything when Lou or anyone from management is a guest speaker. I mean you have one of the greatest minds in all sports up there and all they do is ask what kind of giveaways the team will have this year and complain about thundersticks or Newark. Lou knows many of them by name because they're so annoying. Well that's my biblical length summary of the fan club. I think despite some of the annoying members, it's well worth it to join and join them on the road. Hell, maybe if some more normal people join it will make their functions more enjoyable! Central Jersey Devil 06-08-2007, 10:42 AM If I had the time to do those activities I would be all over that. Can you just go to the meetings even if you can't make the trips? cj225 06-08-2007, 10:45 AM I refuse to join it until Trudy is gone. I can't stand her... And I don't like going on trips with that many people...and I've been everywhere in the Eastern Conference (except Atlanta) and I haven't seen a trip down there yet. I also don't see them making any trips out west in the future, so again, I don't see a point in joining. Colorado Rockies '76 06-08-2007, 10:46 AM I refuse to join it until Trudy is gone. I can't stand her... Jamie..who's Trudy? cj225 06-08-2007, 10:48 AM Jamie..who's Trudy? First, who are you and how do you know my name? Second, she's the old cranky woman that's always around the DFC table. I think she's the president of something...she's always been very rude to me. How many people do you know that wear as many Rockies jerseys to games as I do...hmmm...:sarcasm: cj225 06-08-2007, 10:55 AM Look at my username...that should be a dead giveaway. How many people do you know that wear as many Rockies jerseys to games as I do...hmmm...:sarcasm: That's what I figured, but wasn't 100% sure! How the heck have you been?!? Can't wait to sit in the cheap seats next year!! Colorado Rockies '76 06-08-2007, 11:07 AM That's what I figured, but wasn't 100% sure! How the heck have you been?!? Can't wait to sit in the cheap seats next year!! I've been OK, outside of watching one of our own hoist the Cup...scratch that. I can't bring myself to watch Nieds hoist the Cup. Way too painful. At least the Mets are in first, four-game losing streak notwithstanding. Yeah...$10! I can't believe they actually opened those tix up to STH. Steve kept me posted and at one point made it sound like it wasn't going to happen, that he'd be back in the $20s. So what restaurants are we allowed access to? Only one of 'em, right? I can't wait for that first game in the Rock...I've been watching the Devils play in that abomination of an arena since 1983. Finally going to be playing in a building that isn't a complete embarrassment...who the hell signed off on Brendan Byrne Arena in the first place? "Hmm...capacity for 19040 and one concourse...that sounds lovely"...f'in dumba**es! BTW are you driving in or trainin' it? Oh yeah...as far as the fan club goes, it sounds like they offer some great deals if you can ignore some of the douchier members. How many members total as of now, roughly? And how many of those could be considered the annoying type? Drewr15 06-08-2007, 11:45 AM I'm a member. I think it's worth it. It has it's pluses and minuses. It's $20 a year to join. Ha...I think this is a pretty accurate description. I used to be a member back when it was worth it more, some of the trips are ok, I used to do them through the club but then I realized I can do it on my own for less usually so why bother. Still though the few trips I went on I enjoyed and it is fun invading another arena with a few hundred other fans. The two main things they used to have that I did was a softball team that used to play a charity game against the players at the beginning of training camp. That was so much fun but that got nixed by Lou and then they used to have the annual dinner with the players which was so much frigging fun but the Devs have pretty much nixed that too. They have good ticket deals sometimes but it used to have so much more... DevsOwnYou 06-08-2007, 11:48 AM The fan club is worth it to join since it gives you a chance to go to some away games with tickets and lodging all set up. But they don't go to enough away games in my opinion and there are a lot of elder people in the club that don't really make any noise nor cheer loud when they are at the games. They are real fans but just very quiet. so if you are looking to go to Ottawa to cheer on the Devs and get drunk and rowdy, don't sit with the DFC. Sarge18 06-08-2007, 04:27 PM If I had the time to do those activities I would be all over that. Can you just go to the meetings even if you can't make the trips? Yes. You can join and not do a thing. They send out a newsletter every month with club goings on and the trip listings when they announce them. They have over 1,000 members and it's by far the largest fan club in the NHL. The Devils fan club has more members on some trips than other teams have members of their fan clubs. As for the trips, they really have lessened the amount they've taken over the years. I remember when they used to do a California trip and a western Canada trip but haven't since the 90s I think. Now they pretty much confine themselves to any place reachable by bus such as Boston, Washington, Montreal, Ottawa, and Lowell. You could probably get a better deal on Boston or Caps tickets but I can't see how you could even get tickets for Montreal, let alone a luxury suite, hotel and transportation. As for Trudy, I didn't know she had the ability to be mean. I always thought she was one of the nicest people on the planet. I can't say that for some of the other crotchety old members that think the world and the team owes them something. | ||
