fortheloveof666 06-07-2007, 06:13 PM I understand this could have been chunked into the other thread (which I didn't read all of so I may be repeating what someone else said) but I think its a topic in and of itself.
I'll first state, I really disliked Scott's decision to leave but I understood it and didn't hold too much animosity because of it. I think Brian Burke is the one to blame for that mostly anyway, and his efforts proved to be fruitful so what can you say?
My biggest problem with last night was one thing...ROB getting the cup second. I understand Scott is the captain, and Rob is his brother and hasn't won one yet...but TEEMU SELANNE waited just as long, is a better all-around player and may very well have been playing in his last NHL game ever. For Scott to not acknowledge that and only care about being able to hand it to Rob I personally think is classless, and sort of arrogant too. It's like "here let me give you this championship I came and earned for you."
I know this might be divisive and people see it differently but I think it was ********...because I think Teemu deserved to have it second, not his brother, period. Just like when the Avs beat us, who got the cup after Joe Sakic? I don't actually recall but I'm almost positive the entire team stood back, Joey gave him the cup and said "go ahead, take it man." Granted Borque was a bigger story, but it's the same principle.
I lost some respect for Scotty after that, but I am happy he got the Smyth.
fluffernutter mf 06-07-2007, 06:18 PM Rob got it before Selanne because Rob's an alternate. Selanne was the first without a letter to get it, though.

Oh please, Rob is one of the 2 alternate captains which means he should get it either 2nd or 3rd so Scott wasn't out of line at all.
He also said handing the Cup off to his brother was the absolute highlight of his hockey career and it probrably would be for any one of us too if we were in that spot.
Calling him classless for that is over the top.

I atually agree with you for once.
Drewr15 06-07-2007, 06:33 PM I atually agree with you for once.
Crap, me too.
fortheloveof666 06-07-2007, 06:43 PM I didn't expect anyone to agree with me, but I still feel that way A or not. I think the principle of Selanne supersedes his brother or any letter. Rob has a chance to defend it, Teemu most likely will not and it was talked about before the game, and I'm sure they knew more details inside the locker room.
DANCIN'WITHJANSSEN 06-07-2007, 07:42 PM I somewhat agree that the Scott/Rob handoff was wrong. It took a lot away from the team winning the cup and made it more of a Niedermayer spectacle.
It's not all about the Niedermayers, winning the cup is about team.
I would have liked to see both A's lift it simultaneously, or even the other A first.(I don't even know who the other Anaheim A is I would guess Pronger but who knows and who cares)
Scott's decision may not have been the best, but definately not the worst...at least Rob is an A.
Devilsfanatic 06-07-2007, 08:05 PM Hey at least he held it up first. Not like that **** where Sakic just handed it to Bourque. Now that was crap.
Devils Mike 06-07-2007, 08:52 PM Who cares about who carries the cup second? Seriously, everyone gets there turn and it's not arrogant and claseless if you give it to your own brother who has deserved it.
fluffernutter mf 06-07-2007, 08:57 PM Who cares about who carries the cup second? Seriously, everyone gets there turn and it's not arrogant and claseless if you give it to your own brother who has deserved it.
Exactly. Selanne was the first one without a letter to get it, which is how it should have been. The captain always gets it first, then the alternates, then the rest of the team.
Brooklyndevil 06-07-2007, 10:08 PM Actually, I thought Selanne should have touched the cup before Pronger. Great player, but boy do I dislike Pronger.
Drewr15 06-07-2007, 10:16 PM Does anyone really think the players cared in what order they touched the Cup? They just frigging one the most difficult trophy in sports and they know they won it as a team, I highly doubt they care who touched first.
holy roman empire 06-07-2007, 10:58 PM I don't think any of this matters.

Do you really think Selanne cares when he got the cup? I mean com'on, some of you are reaching for straws just so you can bash Niedermayer.
sundstrom 06-07-2007, 11:03 PM it's funny that this is brought up in a devils board.
when the devils won in '03, stevens got the cup & dan-o was standing right next to him expecting to get it (being his last game and all) and you hear ON CAMERA, stevens saying "where's neider?" because he was the A. dan-o points to where neidermayer is but still thinks he's getting the cup. but stevens does give it to neidermayer...who then gives it to elias...who THEN gives it to the sentimental Daneyko. Neider and Elias were the A's and they got the cup.
I am fine with Neidermayer giving to his brother who was an A.

I think that's a bit of an overstatement. Like I said...I don't really have any animosity toward him although it did annoy me some that he left. I'm not reaching for anything, just saying what I think the principle was there. To be perfectly honest, I was really hoping now that he won it he'd consider coming back.

Beautifully summed up.
GentlemanOfLeisure 06-08-2007, 12:47 AM Seriously, if it wasn't Elias handing off the cup to someone, then it doesn't matter to me at all.
i love how niedermayer seemingly ripped the cup out of bettman's hands...quite the akward moment...lol!
yeah rob neids is an alternate captain so he deserves the damn thing more than that ****** pronger...
selanne is great, but i remember reading he refused to wave his no trade clause for a trade to the devils at the deadline a few years back...can't get too worked up over the order he touched the cup...lol!

I noticed that as well. Look like Bettman wanted to wait for his photo with Niedermayer but instead that was cut short rather quickly. :biglaugh:

So, are you angry with Bettman for giving the Cup to Niedermeyer first and not handing it right to Selanne? I mean, Nieds has four Cups now and Teemu has just this one?
Of course not! Because the Cup is always handed to the Captain, who always hands off to his Alternates. That's the way it always is, regardless of who else is on the team.
I think it showed respect to Selanne when Pronger handed it to him 4th.

LOL, I love it when someone who is having a major overreaction tells me that I'm overstating something, seriously that is rich.
I have yet read one article are seen anything on TV about Selanne or any of the other Ducks being bent out of shape about Scotty passing the cup first to Rob, and I'm sure they realize that without Rob there is no Scotty and without Scotty there is no cup.
Exit56 06-08-2007, 12:50 PM This thread isn't about Barry Tallackson?

Exactly…Scott signed with Anaheim to win a Cup with his brother. That is absolutely going to be the highlight of both of their careers. I might have a problem with it if Rob didn’t have an ‘A’, but he does so the order made perfect sense. Teemu got his recognition by being the first non-letter player to raise the Cup.
Exit56 06-08-2007, 01:17 PM You mean David Clarkson, right?
Tallackson wore 27 too.. They gave it to him after Nieder had it.
wingmanpei 06-08-2007, 01:22 PM Who cares who the Cup was passed to, Anaheim won it and they deserve to pass the Cup in whatever order they see fit. There are no rules, written or unwritten. I am sure they discussed it before hand and it is up to them when players get handed the Cup, it's not up to the fans or people on a message board.
When Messier won the Cup with the Rangers he skated over and passed it to Keenan. When Sakic got the Cup he passed it to Bourque without even lifting it first. Why did these captains do this, because of the respect that they and their team mates had for Keenan and Bourque. Anaheim had a certain a manner in which they wanted to pass the Cup, it's their prerogative and they had their reasons. It's not a popularity contest.
anotherdonut 06-08-2007, 01:41 PM I don't think any of this matters.
agreed
Tao Jones 06-08-2007, 02:58 PM Doc made a point of saying the pecking order is pre-determined, but not dwelled upon, before any possible Cup-raising win.
fortheloveof666 06-08-2007, 03:34 PM Sort of like in 1995 when Detroit thought winning it was sure thing and were practicing by passing around a cooler at practice?
I always thought that's what made sweeping them all the sweeter.
Niedermayer21 06-09-2007, 01:56 AM With Nieder getting the Smythe and helping Anaheim win the Cup, it just proves how many great players we had on the Devils for so long a time.
Interchangeable my ass!!!
We had Nieder, Scott Stevens, Bruce Driver, Dano, Tommy Albelin, et. al. on defense for a long time. Niedermayer and Stevens will make the Hall. Driver and Dano were top defensemen, one offensively and one defensively. Dano was great at killing penalties and Driver was great on the power-play. Albelin could do everything well.
Up front we had Johnny Mac, Neal Broten, Aaron Broten, Kirk Muller, Stephane Richer, Bobby Carpenter, Pat Verbeek, Patrick Sundstrom, Brian Rolston, Jason Arnott, Billy Guerin, Randy McKay, Bobby Holik, Steve Sullivan, Doug Gilmour, and Claude Lemieux, etc., etc. at forward at one point or another. Interchangeable stars, hardly a group of second, third, and fourth liners!!!
And Burke, Terreri, and Brodeur in net. Not bad, eh?
Congrats, Scotty! Wish Lou could have gotten Rob from the Flames. I know he tried, but que sera, sera.
