According to northjersey.com Andy Greene has signed a two-year deal worth 1,2 mil. He took a salary cut but gained a one-way deal in return.

This is really a piece of good news.

This is phenomenal news. I had him penciled in around 900k to a million for next year.

You expect veteran players to take pay cuts to stay with a team, but it's unusual to see that from young guys who haven't made much yet.

Wow....Andy Greene showing us what he's made of........the guy probably took a cut for A) a 1 way deal so he's always in the show and B) because the Devils signed him as an undrafted FA and gave him his start.

:handclap: Atta way Andy.

but it's unusual to see that from young guys who haven't made much yet.

This guarantees he'll make the full 1.2 mill over the next 2 years, instead of having an NHL contract worth say 900k, but only playing maybe 20-25 games in the NHL and having that prorated while making a minor league salary the rest of the time. I think he knows how Lou will push the salary cap and he wanted to make sure he got his $ and guaranteed himself a spot on the big club.

this is a great bit of news, and hopefully the first of many positive developments this off-season.

i was pretty happy with andy's play, and how well he meshed into the lineup last season... gotta think he'll continue to improve and log a lot of quality minutes.

Absolutely. I expect at least 5-20-25 next year. The following year, I feel that if we utilize his slap shot, 10-30-40 isn't out of the question.

Actually, that's not really true. A lot of 1st round guys who got the rookie max but were not solid NHL players as of their contract re-up take less because they either don't accept the qualifying offer or that they know they would get less on the open market.

Andy Greene is essentially making more money this coming year since he has a 1-way contract and is guaranteed the 600,000 if he gets sent down or not.

Smart business decision by him if he feels he might not be on the Devils the entire year (which is possible as anything can happen). I'm sure whoever his agent is highly recommended him getting a 1 way deal for less as opposed to a 2-way deal for slightly more.

Devs always like the Team players. He is probably just happy to be playing....Plus this will lead up to him having a decent payday in two years like Ralfie...Being a college Grad, you would expect him to have a good head on his shoulders!

With this signing, I wonder if Lou will let Rafalski sign elsewhere and have a good D mix with.

White-Martin
Greene-Luko
Matty-Oduya/Fraser/Brooks

Then free up tons of cash to sign Gomer and ------Drury-----
(MAY NEED ITS OWN THREAD)

This would be a similar mix to the days where we always had an offensive D man with a Defensive D man mix.
Leads for some interesting conversation at least

JRZ DVLS i actually agree with letting Rafalski walk but if Martin has another off year it could actually hurt us. It seems like a high risk/High Reward situation so it could go either way but to free up the cap space from Rafalski could help us in the long run so. Who knows what exactly is going to happen during free agency this year it will get interesting to say the least.

That would most likely be the worst defensive group in the NHL. Our top pairing would be 2 #3 defensemen (Martin having #2 potential), and I wouldn't be trusting Greene already to take over the PP QB job. And the rest is solid #3/4 or worse guys.

But Greene at 600k is awesome.

In a 2 way deal if he gets sent to the minors he gets paid, but no where near as much as he would make in the nhl. In a 1-way deal he is guaranteed to make $600,000.

The best thing about this deal is the 2 years part. If Greene has a breakout season next year (which I, and many of you all believe will happen), he'll still be locked in to that 600K salary. It's actually pretty similar to the Beauchemin deal.

Does Ralfie really make it that awesome?

I am not saying it will happen, but I could see it happening! Martin will be in a contract year and has to step up obviously, and Greene will be a PP man in the making, maybe not a QB. I think there are much worse D in the league. White and Matvichuk are solid D men, and Luko proved to be more that any of us expected. I am not sold on Oduya/Fraser/Brooks though. Who knows we may see Corrente up here next year!

Just posing the question!

Our defense this year was really bad for most of the year. I don't think anyone would call it "awesome."

The question is, do you think our defense was good enough this year that removing our #1 defenseman will have little impact?

I know the blueline won't be regarded as one of the best the Devils ever seen; but it was still solid for most of the season. Yeah, they got owned in the playoffs - so did the entire Devils squad in some games. Let's stop trying to see the forest from the trees and give some respect to the defensemen; they were pretty good. I think letting Rafalski walk without a capable #1/#2-who-can-be-a-#1 d-man returning hurts the Devils on defense without question; but the result would not be the worst in the league.

Commitment to playing safe hockey/team defense, and Brodeur kept us from giving up a lot of goals. As well as close to zero offensive output (yea, Rafalski had a lot of assists...nothing much seen from anyone else)... not giving up many doesn't help as much if you can't score a few here and there. They may not have played as defensively, but the Sens definitely had a better (by far) defensive group.

Because this year he didn't make all of that 900k. He was in the minors for about half the season. It was a two way contract, so he wasn't making the 900k during the time he was in Lowell. Half a season at 900k or all of a season at 600k. This way, Greene is GARANTEED to make 600k the next two years no matter where he plays.

If we sign Rafalski and another defenseman, Greene is pushed back to a pretty solid #6 with Oduya behind him. While I think he will spend the next two years with the big club, it isn't a sure thing.

HAR HAR because he didn't make all of his money this year. Not even half of it.

He's making a GUARANTEED 600K with his new contract even if he somehow gets sent to the minors.

Use your head. He only played 20 some-odd games in the NHL. That's only about a 1/4 of his 900K that he signed for. Plus like 75K that he made in the AHL. He's making double this coming year what he made last season GUARANTEED.

It's not like it's that complicated.
