Seeing the topic on Souray reminded me of this. I was watching the AHL All-Star skills competition and Andy Greene took a 96 mph slapshot. During his time with the big club we saw that he could blast it (goal against Ottawa in game 1) but it appeared to me that he was being misused on the PP.
With a shot like that you'd figure they'd try to set him up for one-timers but they'd always put him out at left defense on the powerplay with Martin.
For people that have seen him more often, does he just have a slow release? Were they trying to get him more confidence by breaking him into the PP slowly? Essentially, can he use his big shot effectively in game situations?

I think they were just being cautious with him. Eventually, he will be given more freedom and that slapper will lead him to 8+ goal seasons.
the shot I think was actually 96.9 mph ;)

I agree, all year he was just feeding Mcgillis for the one-timers. He has a canon and will produce for the Devils.

Andy Greene reminds me of a better version of Eric Weinrich, who I always felt was an underrated defensemen.

Andy Greene has the potential to be a Brian Campbell or slightly better. Just needs a tad bit more speed.
getting off a rocket slapshot and gettting it off in a game are completely different situations. Without having seen the AHL shot, he had all the time in the world to set up for it. It's a little different when a forward is charging at you trying to block the shot, and you are worried about getting it through the shooting lanes. Those are skills he'll hopefully develop with time.

That's what I was asking...whether he's been able to get off that shot in college/AHL. He never even tried in NJ, they didn't set him up for it.

I've seen him take slappers but not off the one-timer.

From watching the playoff games, it did seem like his big shot was not utilized to its full potential, and that is probably something the Devils can work on next season. Just as they feature langenbrunner's shot on the 1st PP, maybe they could feature Greene on the 2nd PP.
