Finland has to win this. I need my bragging rights in our family. I'm moving to Canada shortly, and I'd like to go in as a winner :help:

Canada is better than Russia, but it will be a different game from todays game. Finland is far better than the team sweden they had to fight today. I am expecting shots to be pretty even this time, and puck possession too. It comes down to goalies and shot quality. We have the better goalie, they have the better shot quality. It's gonna be one tough battle between two physical teams.

Great final! :yo:

It isn't surprising at all, that the two semifinal teams with the most NHLers, meet in the final.

Canada will take this, IMO.

I agree. Finland is my favorite Euro country. So if Canada doesn't win Gold tomorrow I won't be too disappointed.

I'm sure this game means a lot to Finland. They deserve to win a big tournament. I felt so bad for you guys losing the Gold medal to Sweden at the Turin Olympics.

I'm thanking the hockey god's that this final matchup of my dreams came true.

I'm just so happy we won't have to face the Swedes, and have our hearts broken, again.:phew:

I love Canadian hockey almost as much as finnish.

It so nice to be able to watch a great final without having to be a nervous wreck since whoever wins will be a worthy winner imo.

If there is one team you can lose a final to, it's Canada.

If Canada wins then things are like they should, since I believe hockey is Canada's game.

What time is the game (Eastern time)

aceshigh81
05-12-2007, 05:48 PM
It´s 7.15pm in Finland, so eastern time would be...12.15pm?

This thread has turned sooo gay! Well, it´s never a shame to lose against Canada. Then again, Finland has quite dark history, eight times in tournament finals - and only one win: Lost Turin 2006, World Cup 2004...won WC-final 1995 - but lost 1992, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001...

So it would be time to re-write the history. It´s going to be a tight game -hopefully. Guess we are underdogs, again, but perhaps this time Team Finland can win that last, final game. Semifinal win against Russia and getting to the finals was a small surprise, but why stop now?

Hopefully, it will be a great game, with clean hits, scoring chances and that Finland win the 2nd title after 1995.

Statistically, Finland is slighty better on the goalie postition but this doesn't mean anything. K. Lehtonen will hopefully play as he did against Russia.

I'm rather pessimistic but I was wrong already twice, so I hope to be wrong again and Finland wins!

I can always see the same thing happening with Canada-Finland matchups. It is just different than any other matchup finland has, because the respect is there from both sides.

Against sweden, the posters go:

Swede: "Our team is superior, prepare for party:banana: "
Finn: "REVENGE! Remember -95! but we don't play well against them :help: "

Against USA:

american: "BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD! USA! USA!:win: Where is Finland? what is Finland?"
Finn: "oh them again, who do we play after winning them? "

Against Czech:

Czech: "Our guys are more skilled, and Finland are bullies:banghead: "
Finn: "You never know with the mullet guys, the diving might give them a chance:nopity: "

Against Russia:

Russian: "PUNY FINLAND. Big bear crush small.:win: "
Finns: "WINTER WAR! All brothers in arms now! Our heroes did not die in vain:madfire: "

Against Slovakia:

Slovakian: "Meh:rolleyes: "
Finn: "Meh:rolleyes: "

And then against Canada:

Canadian: "We should win, but these guys play our game, lots of respect! "
Finns: "We have a shot. Canada plays our kinda hockey! Lots of respect! "

And I like it like that.

No surprise at all that Russia lost to the Finns today. Ovechkin/ Malkin and the Russians are great players, they will be even better once they take cognizance of the North American defensive game.

Canada will win tomorrow, easily.

Yep. Looking for a great battle where opponents don't play dead after every contact and get up without whining when beeing tackled.

Finland should be more ready to start this game with the right intensity and aggressiveness, because as an opponent Russia was from a different league compared to yesterday´s Sweden.

Team Finland made a great load of work to keep all the five players in tight package all around the rink and that is the critical success factor today as well. Our forwards must skate back to the own end and help the defense all the time.

This will also be a interesting goalie battle, but I have full confidense on Lehtonen beeing a step ahead of Ward at the moment. Kärppä is on fire.

This should be a great game. I've been very impressed with Koivu. And Ruutu is awesome to watch.

My prediction is that Canada will win because of the top end scoring skill they have with Nash, E. Staal, etc. But it should be close and can certainly go either way.

I'll say 3-1 for Canada.

Tuomo has a nice variety of shots, including a laser wristshot, and a cannon for a slapshot, pretty accurate as well. Get him to shoot more and we might have a nice secondary scorer ^^

They will show the game from the same giant screen in Senaatintori (Helsinki) that was used yesterday to show the Eurovision song contest final for 25000 (?) people. Too bad I have a meeting early tomorrow morning. There are all the possibilities for a great hockey festival in Helsinki: sun is shining, beer is cheap and Team Finland is full of self-confidence...

Finland plays a game like the 1980 USA hockey team. No extremely big names but they've got a chemistry that goes beyond a visible level.

Canada is an allstar team that really is a contender no matter if the fourth line is the first line or vice versa.

It'll be a great game but here in the States I probably cannot find a place to watch it.

All of that aside GO FINLAND!

I had no expectations for team Finland before this tournament (based primarily on the previous championships held in Russia  )

So, in the words of the great Borat Sagdiyev we have already in my mind achieved: "Great success!!"

But mathematically speaking the odds are starting to favour us winning a final game sooner or later.

It would also be sweet to finally get our revenge on Brind'Amour and Canada in 94.

First goal:

Laamanen not holding his man.

Second goal:

Berg not even trying to hold his man.

The said two shouldn't see more minutes on the PK. Laamanen's clearing with the stick was brilliant though, but his marking is subpar.

Laamanen looked pretty good on the PP though, more of his home field.

Defensemen on PK should be

Kukkonen - Söderholm
Saravo - Kukkonen/Söderholm doubleshifted.

And was it just skate problems that kept Jere off the PK or are they trying to preserve his energy?

Koistinen needs to play more.

And Peltonen and Lehtinen have to adjust their game for Viuhkola not being quick enough. Kontiola should've been there instead. He is not as smart as Viuhkola, but has faster feet and soft enough hands.

It's just a shame one of the best skating nations have two players like this on our World champs team...

Stupid penalties from Team Finland and exploiting scoring opportunities 100-0 to Canada. Altough we created a couple of good places, Finland lacks the killer instinct that Canada has in form of guys like Nash.

Söderholm and Saravo must improve their game a lot in order to keep the Canadian guys away from the war zone.

Saravo is left making up for Laamanen's mistakes on the PK.

Also, Berg's mistake, was a double mistake, first it was the positional error of being to late to receive the pass that was meant for him (he missed the puck!), causing it to go further down the ice, where it was retrieved and then lost to the canadians, and then not marking his man in front of the net.

this game is a looooooong way form over. I really like this Finnish team. When they get their own version of the end board cycle going, they are very good.

The Canadian team is well coached and seem prepared for it though, Canada is anticpating most of their moves, switches and passes down low. Finland is so quick in the 1st few strides and can make it work, but they are going to have to go completely rabid dog in-order to make it work.

If Canada get's one more goal before Finland does this will be over.

Canada's transition game, wall-work and forecheck are just as good as Finland's; the difference in teams is Canada's forward one-on-one talent and Canada's excellent young defence. By observation, I would say Canada should pull away....

but don't count these scrappy Finns out...they are a gutsy team.:handclap:

This is the second thing were Canada is ahead. Their coaching is just brilliant. Murray uses "hot" players when needed and plays line against line really perfectly.
Canada has won alot of faceoffs, I think because they've also scouted our faceoffs so they are playing always right center vs. center. Brilliant I say.

Sorry to be so Canadian fan at the moment, but I really can't find any good things in our game at the moment. This is totally different team I saw last night.

Altought Canada is alot more different and harder team than Russia was. Canada doesn't just surf around, they drive to the net and score from the:handclap: close range. This is where we are in serious trouble.

who can put his home-town passion behind him in order to see what's needed.

Thanks for the complement to Canada's young team and your insight into the needs of Finlands needs in the future. Good observations.

Oh my God. In the NHL that isn't even a penalty. Hockey is a contact sport.
Hockey is a contact sport, but there are still illegal hits, even in NHL. As far as I know, elbowing is one of those hits that are illegal world wide. In international hockey, headhunting is also illegal, which is just as logical as it's illegal to take out someone's knees.

But I've started to understand that some Canadians consider the elbow as the same body part as the shoulder. I don't know what kind of weird camera angle you watched it from or which homer commentators that quickly said it was a clean hit, but from the camera angle most of us watched, it was a clear elbowing to the head.

All this added together could easily have made a 2+2 penalty on Staal for that hit, as the risk for a concussion would have been there if it would have hit the Finnish defenseman worse.

Andy Murray has once again found a very disciplined and effective tactics for Team Canada. They don't lose their temper like Russia when tackled and are playing so much more for the name in front of their jersey rather than the name behind it, so Finland must work a lot harder to destroy their game plan.

This is one of the things where the 'quality' of our D-men really shows.

Really true. We should get a few mobile 190/100kg d-mens, but our scoring is IMO still the main factor. We could play good defence with 5 mens down, but we should score from the changes... I mean you have to score at least ones to win the game.

We have a few skilled and big d-mens, but they didn't show up to the tournament. (Sami Salo and Joni Pitkänen). But I still can't find any other. Jere Karalahti has the size, but his game has gone to the wrong direction.

This game looks very similar to the Canada - Sweden game. This Canadian team is excellent in making the other team look really bad. I guess double OT is starting to feel in the Finnish legs now as well.

Yeah, but in this game particularly we've taken too many unnecessary penalties. Emotions working the wrong way.

Judging from your user name and flag, no.
Agree, but Finland have slighty dominated the 3rd period :)
So did Sweden, because Canada has gone into "clear the puck and wait for the buzzer" mode for the last period. Finland might score a goal, but not so much more.

I would like to bring out few positive facts from our game.

1. Tuomo Ruutu
Definetly great tournament and he shows the right lion hard when needed. He fights from every single loose puck and gives all he has. He will be a great player for Chicago if he stays healthy.

2. Kari Lehtonen
He is really calm even Canada has scored three times. Goalie we can trust now and in future.

No. Finland had been in a three week camp just before that game and Canada just got together with some players still suffering from the jet lag, so the result was obvious.
