WC QF: May 10th GDT - USA vs. Finland

I keep up with the GDT:s today and start the other game thread for today, since the game is bound to start in about 1 hour.

I think it'll be a very interesting game, with a United States team that has played better in WHC since a long time, according to me. Finland is Europe's own transatlantic team, so perhaps we will see a quite physical game this afternoon/day, depending on where you live.

United States has added Zach Parise from NJ Devils and Ryan Callahan from NY Rangers.

http://www.iihf.com/Hydra/Tournaments_07/output/WS/hydra.iihf.com/113/

This game will probably be streamed online, just as the Canada - Switzerland game was, if you can't watch it on TV.

Finland will go through, IMO. They will need a very good performance from Lehtonen to pull it off though.

In order to win USA Finland needs to improve the exploitation of scoring chances that has sucked so far in this tournament.

Thanks for game talk Chimp.

Team USA is hungrier that it has been for a while. Good legs; and the s(kill) is there too. ( I meant finishing touch). These guys are serious this time.

And, as you mentioned, USA added Paris and Callahan to the roster. The thing is: are they ready to play ? Both are world class players, but it might be too soon for both. Or, do they just mess up the team chemistry ?

Finland has also been coining up its roster all the way. It has been changing pretty much for all of the games. Tell me when has that been any good for the team. The answer is, of course, only if the team is Canada.

My prediction: Finland will physically dominate (after 2nd); they will control the pace of the game, trying as hard they can, but they will not score. USA will have those two necessary counter attacks they need; and will score on both.

But, that's just based to this year performances from both teams. Let the game begin.

And just to be kidding; Lehtonen will tip in the first one :)

I'm hoping for the U.S. but their defence has got to be a lot better than it was against Canada. It was non-existent.

Nice two zone pass from USA, the Finnish defenseman felt he had to hook the American player (which he probably did). PP USA.

It's kind of hard to see which players who are involved in the plays, the commentator is speaking german and the picture is of course a little bit grainy. ;)

Side note, I thought Esche was on the team? When did he get taken off?

Chimp
05-10-2007, 12:37 PM
Nifty dekes by Lehtinen creates a good scoring chance on the PK for Finland. Grahame covered the lower part of the net and smothered the puck on the shot, which the Finnish player in front of the net really didn't get a lot of stick on.

USA answers with a dangerous oddman rush after the PP was over.

It's obvious both teams are playing for the win.

Finland scores! Tuomu Ruutu comes from nowhere and steals the puck from a battle at the left boards. He comes in with full speed and fires a wrister that Grahame perhaps should have had a piece of. USA cannot be satisfied with letting Ruutu stepping in that easily, although the opportunity didn't look that dangerous, it seemed like Grahame had full view of the shooter.

1-0 Finland.

Matti_A

Team Finland has been very impressive today on 6 vs. 5 situations.

Chimp
05-10-2007, 12:46 PM
Finland continues to put pressure on USA. They made it look like a 2 min PP out there, with several good scoring chances on onetimers against Grahame. He held his ground though and saved USA.

Finland drew a penalty because of the pressure and will continue with a 1:30 PP with the start of the 2nd period.

1-0 to Finland after 20 minutes of play.

Guess the refs ripped US with an offside call on a breakaway after a tunrover by the Finns shortly before the goal.
Unfortunately there was no replay.

@TS: I'm sure it was no offside. US forward coming out of zone was clearly on the blueline

US looks erratic today ...

And I hate to say that Ryan Suter maybe is the worst player out there. Checks are late, passes unfocused and no control of the game on the PP.

Regroup guys!

GO USA !!!

Damn, lots of scoring chances, but Finns can't score for toffee. Those US breakaways are bound to get through at some point. Lots of shaky play by finnish D in their own end...nothing new there.

Overall it looked like we were marginally stronger in the 1st...

Phenomenon

A succesful dump&chase from trio Ruutu - Koivu - Kallio in the goal. The whole trio seemed to know what to do and where to go after Koivu shot the puck deep into the U.S. defensive zone.

Well, I didn't see the replay but if you´re coming out from the offensive zone, the blueline is considered to be part of it.

okay i think that finland wins this easily. usa got a great team, talented fast offence and they can also tackle, but they still hasnt enough world class defenders or goaltenders so they would need their best players..

USA hasn't been in the top 5-6 for 10 years, this is no surprise. I didn't think they would make it to a shootout. USA is a good team, but not better than Russia, Sweden, Canda, Finland. The 4 teams in the semis, and the ones that everyone should have expected to be there. I sure did.

The same can be said about Sweden, where 11 of the players never played in the WC:s before, and there are many young players, going off the the NHL this year or in a couple of years. BÅG wants them to be fully ready for the Olympics in three years, as that is the last year he will lead Team Sweden.
