PS2 -- Final Fantasy Tactics

I just bought Final Fantasy Tactics off Ebay and when I popped it in I got the following message after a second or two "Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 format disc".

My brother had disc read errors before with his PS2 and showed me a walkthrough on gamefaqs.com on how to take apart and clean your PS2 laser. I've done that and still no dice.

All of my other games are working but apparently it's not uncommon for a PS2 to have trouble with this game as it has a black bottom.

The seller from Ebay has offered to get it professionally cleaned and resurfaced if I send the disc back to him but I don't really want to pay for that until I try everything I can on my end first.

Any other suggestions? He also said that he had it cleaned before he sent it out whether or not that is true, who knows.

Thanks for your help.

Try another PS1 game, they are all black bottomed. If that game works, than it's your FFT disc that's not working and you should have the ebay seller take it back. If you try another PS1 game and it still doesn't work, chances are your PS2 laser is starting to go kaput and there's not much you can do about it. I'd just buy a used PS1 from a pawn shop somewhere for 20 bucks if that's the cause.

Hmmm, I've got FFT but I don't think I've tried it on my PS2. I'll give it a look and see if it is the game or your console.

It works fine on mine, as do a bunch of my other PS1 games. All PS1 games have the black bottom, try other PS1 games if you've got them. If they work then it is a problem with the disc, if not then I guess it is your laser.

Favorite game of all time by the way. Incredible story and soundtrack. Hope you get it to work. It's worth it.

How good is your computer? It isn't quite the same but as long as you're computer isn't ancient, you can play it on an emulator. ePSXe is the best one to use, though it can be difficult to set up at first, as you need to download a plugin bundle for Video, Audio, and CD, then by trial and error figure out which ones work best for each game.

Dunno if this means much of anything, but I think i recall when the game was re-released as a greatest hits title the initial batches didnt work for some reason. I dont know if was the PS1, 2, or both. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I've played the game the whole way through at least 10x already as my brother has a copy but I wanted to get it for myself for another go around. I never did all the side quests before so I want to go through and do that this time.

It's definately the most adult, political, FF there has ever been. It's great.

I got the disc resurfanced today and it still doesn't work. Bummer. I'll have to send it back to the seller as I don't have any PS1 games.

I haven't finished FF 12 yet, but 12 seems to be the most adult/political.

Not that it helps, but I have a greatest hits FFT and it works fine on my PS2. I've never had a problem with any of my PS1 games working on my PS2. The real PS2 killer are those purple-bottomed PS2 games.

Question: Is the game you got used? If it is, get a scratch repair/cleaning kit. I have one from a compnay called Allsop and it's fixed a bunch of read errors even when the disc doesn't look damaged. Try that out before you send the game back.

And just as a side note: FFT rocks. It was the second Final Fantasy game I finished (after FF9).

I finally got around to playing Final Fantasy Tactics a few weeks ago and it's an absolutely fantastic game. A few of the fights are pretty damn tough but it's a really fun game and I love how much you can pretty much customize your party to be whatever you want it to be. I'm on a pretty good run of games of late, I'm playing Suikoden III right now and it's stellar as well.
