I honestly wonder if adding players at this point will help or hurt a team. I suppose for the US it could be good if Cole is out, but I gotta think it messes with team chemistry a bit.

As a Devils fan and a team USA fan this makes me really happy.

I just have to wonder though, if they were going to add one more forward why pick Parise (over Gomez and Gionta). All three of them had good playoffs, but I'd say Gomez had the best, unless he just didn't want to go or they needed a LW and not a center.

Of course this will help. Sit a kid like Nathan Davis and put a real contributor on one of the top two lines. I think Parise could be a real differance maker against the Finns.

Gomez is a few months away from cashing in big time. No need to risk the big payday by injuring himself at the IHWC, although the odds of such a major injury are small.

I expected at least one of the Devils USA players to head over if the brass decided to add anyone else (since we knew they were allowed to add players).

As someone mentioned, Cole's injury may have factored into adding a player now; plus Chris Clark is banged up as well from what I have read, although he did play in the last game after he suffered the injury.

Nice to see Parise was invited and that he said yes.

About Gomez, as someone mentioned, his pending UFA status probably did factor in plus sometimes there are issues related to insurance. Gionta could still be battling the groin injury or a different injury and/or there could be issues with last minute and heading overseas with a young family at home.

realize parise also played on a line with brandon bochenski for two years, so they have some chemistry, even if it was a couple years ago.

just a clarification to my post above...Clark did not play in the game after the injury:

"Ship Without a Captain...Team USA and Washington Capitals captain Chris Clark was out of the lineup on Monday when the Americans faced the Canadians in the last game of the qualifying round. Clark suffered what was termed a “bruised leg” in Saturday’s 3-0 Team USA win over Team Germany...."Chris Clark is being evaluated on a day-to-day basis,” said Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan immediately after the loss to Canada. “Our expectations are that we will have him for the next game. But having said that, he is a day-to-day evaluation. He seems to be improving, and our hope is that with each day that passes, he improves that much more.”

and Parise practiced with the team...

excerpt

"Winger Zach Parise of the New Jersey Devils arrived in Russia Wednesday morning after an all night flight and was at practice with his new Team USA teammates hours later. Parise must have flown first class and gotten a good night’s sleep because he looked swift and sharp to us at Wednesday’s practice..."
