So called elbow.
Under IIHF rules there is a choice of penalties for what Willliams did:

520 - BOARDING
a) A player who bodychecks, elbows, charges or trips an opponent in such a manner that it causes the opponent to be thrown violently into the boards, shall be assessed at the discretion of the referee, a:
- Minor penalty (2’)
or
- Major penalty + Automatic Game Misconduct penalty (5’+GM)
or
- Match penalty (MP)
OR
526 - ELBOWING
a) A player who uses his elbow to foul an opponent shall be assessed a:
- Minor penalty (2’)or
- Major penalty + Automatic Game Misconduct penalty (5’+GM)
or
- Match penalty (MP)
OR
523 - CHECKING FROM BEHIND
a) A player who runs, jumps, charges or hits in any manner an opponent from behind
shall be assessed, at the discretion of the Referee, a
- Minor penalty + Automatic Misconduct penalty (2’+10’)
OR
540 – Checking to the Head and Neck Area.
a) A player who directs a check or blow, with any part of his body, to the head and neck area of an opposing player or ”drives” or ”forces” the head of an opposing player into the protective glass on boards, shall be assessed at the discretion of the Referee a:
- Minor penalty + Automatic Misconduct penalty (2’+10’)
or
- Major penalty + Automatic Game Misconduct penalty (5’+GM)
or
- Match Penalty (MP)
b) A player who injures an opponent as result of checking to the Head and Neck Area
shall be assessed, a
- Match Penalty (MP)

Unlike the NHL rule it does NOT require the elbow actually be extended (as it was here). Under IIHF rules any blow with an elbow can be penalized as can any hit to the head - so no Scott Stevens type hits.

Them's the rules.

Different rules, hits that are okay in the NHL can be penalized under IIHF rules. However the elbow would have been a penalty under NHL rules as well.

See my post above for the text of the rules.

It could have also been called a hit to the head neck area or checking from behind but those penalties would have also entailed a 10 minute misconduct as well. Williams got away lightly.

You are incorrect Wet. It was not an elbow. Watch it again, it is obvious, and I fail to see how an intelligent poster such as yourself could miss it. Are you just basing your opinion on seeing it once, or have you actually gone back and double checked it as you claim?

234 - GOALKEEPERS HELMET AND FACE MASK
a) All goalkeepers must wear a face mask with a hockey helmet, or a goalkeepers full
face head protector, which meet approved international standards.
a) Goalkeepers face masks must be constructed in such a way that a puck may not get through it.

b ) Should the helmet and /or face mask come off while play is in progress ,the Referee shall stop play.

c ) Should a hard shot hit the goalkeeper’s face mask while play is in progress ,the Referee shall stop play.

The question is whether or not the shot hitting the mask was "hard". If so Canada caught a break.

Cechmanek clearly looked at the ref after the shot hit him in the mask as if he was looking for a whistle. According to IIHF rules the ref needs to stop the play, I'm pretty sure there isn't a stipulation that a "strap needs to be sent flying."

I do agree that play should have been stopped. All I'm saying is that it had nothing to do with the goal. Had Staal scored immidiately after Cechmanek gets hit in the head, then yes, I'd say we caught a break.

The call wasn't made, the goalie needs to re-focus.

Wow, Dave Reid is just incensed that Barinka didn't get a penalty. He's wearing his homer glasses proudly.

Czechs should send that ref a box of champagne for extending their tournament.

Nice win for Canada. No offense to the Czechs, but the Canadian's were simply the better team. I'd really like to see Nash carry his play from this tournament next year and regain his form as a dominant scorer.

Maybe not you since you're German and your team was knocked out because of OT, but it interests me and the rest of the Canadians!

Annoying whining by TSN about officiating. I thought te ref did a great job but because some fans are clueless they will believe whatever TSN tells them as a guy on the previous page.

The same crap like in the wc Juniors.
Somebody don't won't to a small hockey country to have some success.
The czechs just had to be in the quarterfinals, so there will be a way they reach the quarterfinals...

Good on them for beating the Czechs and the refs. I guess it's just too barbaric to play hockey the real way.

First and second period we were better, but in third period we were very tired. And Canada were today happier team, first goal gratis, then Olezs' "no" goal (similar situation like in Salt Lake 2002, that time nobody didn't know too, where was the puck). Congrats Canada to win, great third period and OT...

Sure :shakehead If you don't like the rules, go home and don't bother.

It's kinda amusing. 1-1 goal was total disgrace, it shouldn't be valid. For all those who whine about the refs, I'd like to see what you would do in similar situation.

Didn't had anything to do with you. Just general frustration ;). First the Canadians rob our points in the Preliminary Round, then they score 24 secs to late. :pullhair:

Quick question... what happened with Chechmanek in overtime? I heard that he didn't come out for OT because he was "tired." Is that true?
