Does anyone else think this bum looks like a cross between the Fonz and Dennis Miller?

I always saw that too...actually, he looks more like Henry Winkler, if that makes any sense. I see the Dennis Miller thing too.

What an idiot . Funny, I'm sure he wasn't such an ******* after Games 2 and 3...

Here is an article by ESPN The Magazine's E.J. Hradek on the incedent, "Agitated Tortorella not upset with team after loss (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs2007/columns/story?id=2844833)."

You would NEVER see Lou give a negative interview like that. You would see Lou give an avassive interview like that in which he doesn't want to discuss much or give away inside information.

Also, there were reports about Lou Lamoriello, then only CEO/President/GM of the Devils, getting into a shouting match Rangers fans at MSG after the Devils lost in, I believe, the early part of 2005-06.

I agree Brooks is a nosey jerk. I know that Lou would not have used profanity like that though. Just would've shot him THAT glance!

I didn't think Brooks was out of line with any of the questions, they were hockey related and were about the game. If a coach is going to be answering questions with "We know what we did" 3 or 4 times, of course any reporter is going to ask what he means by that, what did Tortorella expect. If you are going to be giving obnoxious, garbage answers you can expect to be asked garbage questions. Tortorella took that conference in a certain direction and Brooks just followed like any reporter would do.

The point is that Tortorella said something like "If I wanted to tell you what we did, I would have told you."

At that point Brooks should have stopped the line of questioning. Digging further when a guy tells you to **** off indirectly is almost always going to lead him to telling the reporter to **** off directly if that reporter keeps going. I would have done the same thing.

Seriously, what did Brooks think? Did he think he was going to break a story or something. He should know that team strategy is held very close to the chest in the playoffs. He was just being an ass by trying to dig further.

Dude..he's a journalist! He has the right to ask those kinda questions! His questions weren't out of line. Tortorella just kept saying "we know what we did" and Brooks asked him what that was? It's not like it was a stupid question..

Tortorella wasn't answering any questions and Brooks just pointed that out. A guy even asked Tortorella about Brodeur's play and his answer was "I don't coach Brodeur".

Duuuhh, we know you don't coach the guy you bum, but you can also give some credit when credit is due. Our players have been giving Holmqvist tons of credit in the series, because he has been good. It's called good sportsmanship.

I honestly thought Brooks was just being a jackass when I saw it. I mean if the guy just lost a game and doesn't want to answer questions, a reporter isn't going to get him to answer them by prodding him some more. It's not like it was a formal postgame session. It looks like there was a reporters' scrum around him when he stepped out of the changing rooms.

There are some basic unwritten rules about sports reporting with coach interviews.
Rule # 1: When a coach just lost a game, don't ask the "What went wrong? / What will you do next time? -type strategy questions ... especially if the coach is in a pissy mood.

Rule # 2: Never ask a coach about an opposing player expecting anything more than a cliche. If a coach just lost, don't ask him about the player on the opposing team most responsible for his team losing that game (and especially again if the coach is in a pissy mood).

Rule # 3: If a coach just loses a player to injury (especially come playoff time), don't expect a straight answer on the injury. Ask once and move on.

The problem was that Brooks was needling Tortorella. Tortorella was in a bad mood and not going to answer any serious questions in any depth. The reporters and Brooks specifically should have realized it and not tried to push Tortorella's buttons. If Brooks wanted to get in depth stories to write about, he should have been a real reporter and not a sports journalist. I mean all they deal with are cliches and rumours. Half of their writing is fiction and the other half is crap that they could have written in template form long before the game started.

He has the right to ask questions. Heck, asking follow up questions to clear up an answer is one of the first things taught in journalism school(I'm currently a broadcast journalist major). The thing where Torts told him to "get the **** out of here" was when Brooks complained about it being a waste of time. He's perfectly within his right to ask questions, he's not in his right to complain about not getting answers. Like one of your posters said, you have to act differently when around winning/losing teams after a game. If Torts isn't going to in to detail about anything, the reporter should get the hint. It's frustrating as a journalist, I've had it happen to me a few times, but you don't complain about it to the person you're interviewing. I don't know what Brooks expected Torts to do when he complained. He wasn't going to open up just so Brooks can write his story and he's not going to be in a good mood after a loss. Torts obligation is to take questions from the media, how he goes about answering those questions is up to him. I'd be frustrated if I were Brooks too, but it's a bit out of line to complain like he did when Torts wasn't answering his questions. Ask different questions or move on to somebody else who will answer questions...there are 20 guys in the locker room.

I agree with alot of what you said but if Tortorella was in a bad mood, why take it out on reporters or the media. He was being an knob before he and Brooks got into it and was giving garbage answers to legitimate questions by other reporters prior to that. I'm not a fan of Brooks and alot of reporters because some of them are only there to stir the pot and get under people's skin, but reporters have a job to do also and some of them do it right which some of them were trying to do with Tortorella. I thought that Tortorella was leaving himself wide open for the questions that Brooks was asking. Direct that anger to the people who lost the game for him (his players) and not to people who are just doing their jobs.

The Devils do not allow assistant coaches to talk to the media, but one Devil said that MacLean and Tortorella have a strained relationship that dates back to when Tortorella was an assistant coach and interim head coach with the Rangers in 1999-2000, and MacLean was one of his players.

According to Devils center Scott Gomez, most of the words exchanged were not printable.

"You guys don't work for HBO do you?" Gomez asked reporters.

I actually doesn't surprise me to learn that their relationship (or lack thereof) goes back to MacLean's Ranger days. It was pretty clear during Game 5 that MacLean hadn't done anything to warrant Tortorella's violent response. I have to wonder what it is that's between them.
