OT: NJ Food Thread

Since the Where are YOU From? thread has turned into a discussion of NJ eats, we might as well have a thread devoted to it.

Now, first things first, there is a SECOND Tastee Sub Shop, this I know. What I do not know is that this one is somehow BETTER than the one in Edison? How is this possible?

Also, I'd like to eat a fat sandwich before I graduate in May. Any suggestions as to what I should get? Being an engineering student meant I spend all my time in Piscataway and not in NB to know much about what's up at the Greasetrucks.

My favorite is still going to my mommy and daddy's house even though I live alone, and eating whatever she makes.

Usually if a shop is owned by different people that happens. I've been to Jersey but it was like in '89 so I don't remember too much about it other than it was hot.

Never eaten at the one in Edison, but I've eaten at the one on rte. 27 in Franklin Park/South Brunswick. In fact, every visit to my family in NJ includes at least one meal from Tastee Subs. Oh, and usually some wings from Chuck's Spring Street Cafe in Princeton.

It's hard to believe but when I get a sub at the original it tastes too bread-y if that makes sense. Plus I think some of the guys that work at the second one are Devils fans. I heard them talking about a game when I was there in December. :yo:

As for the fat sandwiches, just look for the right combo on the board, it's all good. I like the Fat Darrell myself.

I've never heard of Tastee Subs. Is it a Central Jersey thing?

Best ice cream place is Bischoffs in Teaneck, mmm.

They're owned by the same people. One just holds back on the meat. ;)

I remember this great pizza place called "Palermo's" I used to go to, it was near the point where RT 130 and RT 206 meet, a little ways off Exit 7 in Bordentown. There was some great place I used to go to in the New Brunswick area when I was at Rutgers, can't remember the name of it but the best veal ever.

Ah that guys an ass then. I hate people who do that just to save a few cents.

Do you know where it was located? Like on what road?

When I was a kid I remember going to the Rte 1 Flea Market just south of the Raritan River bridge and getting Italian Hot Dogs. I remember they had potatoes and onions and peppers on a hot dog. Anyone know of a recipe for this? Is that basically it?

haha, you're seriously asking me to remember specific details from college? Seriously I'm not sure, though I could drive there right now if I were in New Brunswick, I'm horrible with street names it wasn't a main campus street. This was a fairly small place, didn't look like anything special all their efforts went into the food.

Yes, they are.

There's a great Japanese-owned restaurant called Josho off of Easton Ave.

And the pho at Pho99 in South Brunswick is awesome.

I know I'm going to start chaos here but there is even a third Tastees sub shop and it's in Sayreville, the hamburger sub is to die for.

Have eaten at the Tasty Subs on Rt. 27, good stuff. If you want a real "sub" go to Pierre's in South Brunswick. Yes, pay the $6.75 for a whole Italian SUB, tip the guy a buck if you want to as you will have a great sandwich well worth the money spent.

I grew up in Belmar NJ, and Mikes Giant Subs is the best... 8th Ave right off Main Street. JUST GO and order the Tuna Sub (my fav) with Swiss or American cheese and enjoy.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, WHOA.

What the hell.

I have lived 24 years of my life knowing about the one in Edison, the other one over there in Franklin Park/South Brunswick...AND THERE IS A THIRD ONE?!

I got to sit down...oh wait, I ALREADY AM.

Oh yeah, going back to other foods: I know the White Rose in Highland Park (just outside of Edison) isn't the only one of it's kind. What's the other one called? I know someone here knows it.

WAIT A SEC UPDATE: A quick search by Google shows there's a place in Sayreville called Tastee Sub'n Pizza. Is that the place,?

I've been to greasetrucks. We used to have pilgrimmages during high school either at various times of the night or squeezing it in during the lunch period to that place.

Tastee Sub Shop 2 in Franklin Park make the best subs - I always swing by and pick one up when I'm in the area. They don't put too much meat on 'em (which is good) and always have fresh bread. The closest thing I've found to them up north is the original Blimpee in Hoboken...close, but not quite as good.

Never heard of this Tastee's joint, probably only exists in Jersey. What's the big deal anyway? They're just sandwiches. I've never in my life been blown away by a sandwich.

One of the few places I've eaten at in Jersey was this Portuguese restaurant not too far from NYC. Their portions were MASSIVE.

The grease trucks are great, and the perfect food late in the night. I once saw a kid ask to get a whole fat sandwich deepfried:amazed: The guy making the sandwich actually did it too, for a few extra bucks. I think the the kid took four years off of his life that night.

If you want the best Italian hot dogs you have to go to Tommys in Elizabeth on Elizabeth Ave. Voted best Italain hotdogs last year by the Star Ledgers Munchmobile.
