The Russian Elite League is a VERY hard league to get points in. The league leader in points is usually around 43-49 points, and only 2-3 guys a season score over 20 goals, and I can't remember the last time I saw a player with 30 goals. True, only 51 game seasons, but the games are tight.
Going just on points, 12 points in 24 games is excellent for a defensemen, but more importantly is his play (i.e. other things than just putting up goals and assists).

You mean like how many turnovers does he make?
