Ducks' decision works out fine (Written by Elliot Teaford)
The decision could have sparked some serious postgame second-guessing late Wednesday night at the Honda Center, but it didn't simply because everything turned out just fine for the Ducks.

Coach Randy Carlyle picked goalie Ilya Bryzgalov to start Game 1 of the Ducks' opening-round playoff series against the Minnesota Wild because Jean-Sebastien Giguere has been dealing with some distressing news about his newborn son, Maxime.

Giguere learned after a visit to a specialist at UCLA on Tuesday that Maxime's left eye is normal, however.

Doesn't sound like Giggy will start, but with Bryzgalov there isn't a huge drop off. Ducks need to keep playing the same way they did in game 1. Contain Gaborik and keep up the intensity. Eventually they will breakthrough and get a few pucks past Backstrom. Heading to Minnesota up 2-0 would be very nice. Go Ducks! :handclap:

Hockey Duckie

Damned cheap shot on Huskin's knee(or that's what been said). It happened so fast, but no replay. Huskins' is down for a bit and needed help up. Boogard's prolly following what Lemaire's plan of playing "gritty", eh?

Was it just me or when Huskins got up, he said "mother effer"?

He did say something like that. And yeah, replay showed Huskins leg out and Boogard trying to avoid the knee to knee. Nothing too dirty there, but scary.

more intent to injure in that hit by Boogaard than the Hartnell hit on Cheechoo which earned a 5 minute major.

McDonald19
04-14-2007, 12:07 AM
if this is Minnesota's game plan to even up the series it's not going to work.

stick to a boring defensive style...trying to get dirty with the Ducks is not going to work, too much team toughness. The Wild get pretty soft after Boogaard.

Hockey Duckie
04-14-2007, 01:34 AM
For those unable to see the game, I'll try to recap the Getzlaf shortie.

The Ducks' were killing off a penalty that the 'Stache took. Minnesota Wild D-man Burns came pinching down into the corner, but the puck got past him and Ducks' Travis Moen pounced on the puck along the boards. The lone Wild D-man, Skoula, was out of position defensively (of course he would be b/c he's on the PP) on the opposite side of the ice. Moen had seen Getzlaf race through the center of the ice and made a nice saucer pass to him in stride.

Then Getzlaf went into super-'Stache mode with the puck. While brimming with speed through the neutral zone, Skoula angled to check on Getzlaf. Getz felt him and deked to his right, but brought the puck back into him again which scared Wild netminder to creep deep into his net. When Getz brought his deke back into him, the puck was on his backhand and swiftly lifted the puck over Backstrom's leg pad and past his glove. Red light sirens on... we see the red light and Getz celebrates with what looks like a "Captain Morgan- Do you have the Captain in you?" commercial.

Sweet.

Good win for the Ducks. Will be interesting to see what happens when the Wild have the last change because it seemed like the Wild were more concerned with changes after the faceoff than anything else. Hopefully Penner isn't out for any significant amount of time. That'd be a big blow. :(

Anaheim F Dustin Penner, who had the deciding goal late in Game 1, left the second game during the third period because of a muscle strain and did not return. ...

Good game. I was invited to a dessert party at the 1st intermission in which Brian Burke was speaking...unfortunately I got there late and only heard that he is happy with Bobby Ryan's progression and that at the very best Todd Marchant is 2-3 weeks away. I tried to ask a question but they ended the questions too quickly.

Great game. Ducks really clamped down nicely in the third, and it was seemingly lights out until Minnesota scored that late goal. Good last few minutes of the second period, and that's all we needed.

Backstrom is really, really impressive.

The Ducks played a NJ Devils type game. Credit goes to 25 and 27 who competely shut down the Wild offense. Backstrom is playing a good game but not enough to steal games from Anaheim. The Ducks are going to have a handful with Gaborik on their home ice. Pahlsson has played a damn good series and can be credited with being one of our best players. Carlyle is going to need to get him on the ice every time Gaborik skates a shift. He might have to play without RNieds and Moen.

I didn't get to see the game, but it looks like the Wild outplayed us in 3rd. How was the effort on our end? Were we getting beaten to the pucks? Did we continue our forecheck and hitting?

Spankatola Jamnuts
04-14-2007, 05:29 AM
The Wild outplayed us in the 2nd. The 3rd was basically a shutdown period, and most of Minny's shots weren't dangerous. We did, of course, allow our usual last-5-minute flurry. Cuz we're the Ducks.

But otherwise, the Wild have one good period in this series so far. How disheartening for them that in the period they played their best they were outscored 2-1?

Was at the game... had great seats in sec 204, 3 rows up right on the goal line.

Even though Minny had 32 shots on goal, I didn't many of them were dangerous enough. They had problems going deep in the Ducks zone all night and weren't winning many battles along the boards. Even at the end when they came on strong after making it a 1 goal deficit, I just didn't feel that the Wild had many pure scoring chances. All Bryzgalov had to do was play sound positionally and let the puck hit him. He wasn't being forced side to side and make any spectacular saves. Wild weren't connecting on many good passes, especially in the Ducks zone. I thought the backcheck of the forwards was great, as was the forechecking.

As a side note... who are those girls who clean up the ice/snow during the TV timeouts? OMG are they sexy or what! At least the girls on my end were.

Btw, did anyone see Rolston after the game when he and a few other Wild players were waiting for their bus? If so, was that a (man?) purse that he was swinging around?? Quite a few Ducks fans waiting around after the game were intrigued by this sight.

Ducks played this one almost perfectly.

Wild tried to stand up to the Ducks and get physical and were unable to do that and create offense. Our shorthanded goal was because two of their players tried to hit O'Donnell instead of taking the loose puck, also Mikko Koivu had a weak backcheck and Getzlaf completely undressed Mr.Puck Poise. Getzlaf is starting to emerge as a star with his two way ability.

It is time for people to take note that Beauchemin is a damn damn good defensemen..

You could really see Minnesota getting frustrated before they scored goal 2, if we can keep Gaborik to one point a game and not allow him to score 3/4/5 I can live with that we are doing a great job on their secondary players.

Let's hope Penner and Moen are not hurt badly, we cannot afford to lose either.

Chris Kunitz was terrible he's alot better than the player we saw, also Andy McDonald has not done anything, Teemu can't be the only player on that line elevating his game.

Bryz looked good again, gotta stay with him til he loses. Now let's go split in Minnesota.

I saw the play where he went off, it looked like something in the lower body because he skated off pretty slow and was kind of slumped over so that could mean it's a shoulder too..hopefully it's just an ankle sprain. If he's out who goes in? Do you put May up there and go with Thornton on the 4th? or do you roll the dice with Bobby Ryan(He is supposed to be with the team Monday)

They tried a different strategy, they were shooting their forwards out of their defensive zone to try and get our dmen off the line, our guys just shadowed them. Minnesota does not have the defensive personel to be able to connect on those long stretch passes very often. They have also been bad at dumping the puck in IMO.

I know people didn't and don't like the Parros trade, and even think that Parros should sit, but, wow, has this trade saved our series. Without Parros, Boogaard would be running everyone and probably keeping the team from playing their physical game. But, Parros has clearly kept him in check, and he's been fairly tame with the exception of a hit or two. This has been great as now it allows the team to play physical and that's the reason they're leading this series 2-0.

I know he might've been able to get less, but great job nonetheless by Burkie. The whole 'stache phenomenom doesn't hurt, either.

I was at the game as well (sec 442), it still hurts to talk. The atmosphere was awesome! So much better than the Clipper playoff game I went to last year. I'm hoping to save up and go to the next round or the one after. During the practice I was watching both goalies practice in net and Bryz looks A LOT sharper than Giguere. Jiggy just doesn't seem to have that side to side movement down. I hope he'll get it back soon or just wasn't trying too hard, but Bryz made some good saves during the pre-game practice as well.

Another question I have to playoff vets (those that have been to multiple games), do all games come really close to fights between fans? There were at least two or three in our area alone.

I was more or less unexcited about the Parros trade, but you're right. His presence helps this team play their game and play it well without having to worry about cheap shots from the other team. I wouldn't want to imagine what Boogaard would be doing if Parros wasn't in.

I'm with you on this. I like that Parros is in the lineup, but I don't think he's keeping Boogard in check at all. In my opinion a fight between Boogard and Parros would be to Parros' disadvantage. The guy is a monster, and a proven fighter. If neither one are fighting I don't think it's because they are keeping each other in check, but because one team, or both, just aren't looking to have the heavyweights go at it right now.

That's why if Boogard takes another run like he did at Huskins, I say Parros takes a run at Demitra or Gaborik.

I've been to a few playoff series, back in 97, 99, and 03. In 97 there were some drunken Red Wings fans right behind me (it was game 3) and they kept chanting "sweep." I'm sure people wanted to get into fights with them. But no one really said anything except a few "shut up" shouts. But no fights. Although the same fans (I think) were chanting stuff like that after the game in the parking lot and they almost picked a fight with some Ducks fans there. A little sad that this was the only game that we didn't take the Wings to OT in.

That's the most belligerent I've seen in my 3 playoff games.

Exactly what he did to Edmonton even though Boogard is a better fighter then Parros he knows he has someone who will answer the bell and the rest of the team to go after Minny's stars should anything happen. I'm sure thats facturing into his decision of not running wild.

We all saw what Boogaard did when we didn't have a heavyweight on the roster. Now, I know that Parros probably won't beat him in a fight, but, Boogaard has been fairly tame this series, aside from the odd stupid hit that lands him in the box. Maybe it is Parros and maybe it isn't, but, Boogaard could easily be out there doing whatever the hell he feels like, and completely disrupting the Ducks' game plan, but he isn't, and after that hit on Huskins, it seems that Parros is somewhat keeping him from doing alot more damage.
