Western Conference All-Stars Named
18 Making First-Ever Appearance
PRINCETON, N.J. – The ECHL on Wednesday announced the Western Conference starting lineup and roster for the 2004 Par-A-Dice ECHL All-Star Game.
Sponsored by the Par-A-Dice Hotel Casino and hosted by the Peoria Rivermen, the 12th Annual ECHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition will be held at the 9,919-seat Carver Arena at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, Ill. The Skills Competition will be at 7:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday, January 20 and the game will be played at 7:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, January 21. The starting lineups were determined in voting by Western Conference coaches, team captains, media relations directors, broadcasters and newspaper writers. Coaches also submitted the top prospects from within their conference that determined the final roster with each of the 14 teams in the Western Conference having a representative.
The starting lineup and roster for the Eastern Conference All-Star Team will be announced on Thursday.
2004 Par-A-Dice ECHL All-Star Game Western Conference Starters
Goaltender - Frederic Cloutier, Louisiana
Defense - Corey Neilson, Pensacola
Defense - Ben Storey, Louisiana
Forward - Brent Gauvreau, Mississippi
Forward - Steffon Walby, Mississippi
Forward - Charles Linglet, Alaska
It marks the second straight year that Mississippi’s Walby has been named as a starter. Walby is third in the ECHL with 36 points (14g-22a) and he is tied for fourth in the league with 14 goals. It is the first appearance for the Sea Wolves’ Gauvreau, who leads the ECHL with 25 assists and is tied for the ECHL lead with five game-winning goals while ranking second in scoring with 37 points (12g-25a).
The CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month for November, Alaska’s Linglet leads ECHL rookies with 20 assists, is second with 31 points and is tied for second with 11 goals. In his first full professional season, the Aces’ Joe Talbot leads ECHL rookies with 14 goals and 32 points in 25 games.
Louisiana’s Cloutier is also making his second appearance as a starter, having stopped 15 of 16 shots in the Southern Conference’s 7-6 win in the 2002 ECHL All-Star Game at Trenton. Under contract to Minnesota of the National Hockey League, the 22-year-old Cloutier is 9-2-2 and ranks eighth in the ECHL with a 2.14 goals against average. Selected in the fourth round (98th overall) by Colorado in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft and under contract to Houston of the American Hockey League, Storey leads ECHL defensemen with seven game-winning goals. The 26-year-old Storey is tied for the lead among defensemen with eight goals and is tied for third in scoring with 24 points.
Selected in the third round (53rd overall) by Edmonton in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Pensacola’s Neilson leads ECHL defensemen with 15 power-play assists and 19 power-play points and is tied for the ECHL lead among defensemen with 23 assists and ranks second with 30 points. In his first full professional season, Pensacola’s Greg Chambers leads ECHL rookies with 10 power-play assists and 15 power-play points (5g-10a) and is tied for second among rookies with five power-play goals. The 21-year-old Chambers ranks second among rookies with 17 assists and is tied for third with 24 points (7g-17a) in 24 games.
Selected in the second round (60th overall) by Dallas in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft and under NHL contract with the Stars, Idaho’s Dan Ellis is 8-7-0 and ranks 19th with a 2.52 goals against average in 15 games. Also representing the Steelheads is 23-year-old defenseman David Cornacchia, who has scored 14 points (4g-10a) in 22 games.
Selected in the third round (80th overall) by Atlanta in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and under NHL contract with the Thrashers, Gwinnett’s Michael Garnett is 13-4-2, tied for the ECHL lead with two shutouts and ranks ninth in the ECHL with a 2.15 goals against average. Also representing the Gladiators is 23-year-old defenseman Troy Milam, who is tied for eighth among ECHL defensemen with 19 points (5g-14a) in 26 games.
Selected in the seventh round (207th overall) by Boston in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft and in his first professional season, Greg Barber has scored 16 points (8g-8a) in 22 games with San Diego.
Making his second consecutive appearance in the ECHL All-Star Game is Bakersfield’s Andrew Ianiero, who scored a goal in the Northern Conference’s 8-2 win in the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game. Selected in the fifth round (154th overall) by Ottawa in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, the 22-year-old Ianiero has scored 14 points (5g-9a) in 14 games with Bakersfield after opening the season with Charlotte.
In his first professional season and under contract to San Antonio of the AHL, 21-year-old Greg Jacina is tied for the Augusta team lead with 10 assists and 16 points in 21 games.
Las Vegas is represented by a pair of rookies with forward Justin Kelly and defenseman Dave Cousineau. The 22-year-old Kelly is tied for the ECHL lead among rookies in plus-minus with +13 and leads the Wranglers with eight goals and ranks fourth on the team with 16 points (8g-8a). In his first professional season, Cousineau ranks second among ECHL defensemen with six power-play goals and ranks fifth on the Wranglers with 15 points (7g-8a) in 22 games.
Columbus will be represented by 21-year-old Jean-Francois Plourde, who is under contract to Toronto of the AHL and who leads the Cottonmouths with nine goals and 15 points in 26 games. Representing Texas will be 21-year-old John Snowden, who is tied for the ECHL rookie lead in plus-minus with +13 and is tied for 17th among rookies with 16 points (9g-7a) in 25 games.
Long Beach will be represented by 22-year-old Krzysztof Wieckowski, who is tied for second on the team with nine assists and ranks third in scoring with 13 points in 22 games. Representing Fresno will be 22-year-old defenseman Kevin Truelson, who has 13 points (6g-7a) in 23 games.
Alaska’s Davis Payne and Gwinnett’s Jeff Pyle are the coaches for the Western Conference while Johnstown’s Toby O’Brien and Peoria’s Jason Christie are the coaches for the Eastern Conference. Charlotte equipment manager Tom Severance and Cincinnati athletic trainer Bob Case were chosen to represent the Eastern Conference while Alaska equipment Damion Parmelee, who was also voted to work the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game, and Pensacola athletic trainer Jason Serbus were both selected to represent the Western Conference. Peoria athletic trainer Greg Eberle, who was voted to work the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game, and Peoria equipment manager Matt Briggle have also been chosen to work the game.
