-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WOOHOO. The last game of the season is upon us! And it couldn't be more meaningful. With the Pacific Division title just slipping away from the Ducks last night, they hope to finally cement it tonight with a victory. Facing them, is the Columbus Blue Jackets, who have given the Ducks tizzies all season, though the Ducks defeated them in the last game. Who will win out this titanic struggle? We will find out TONIGHT! :) :yo:

Heat's on Anaheim after loss (Written by Eric Stephens)
A division title figured to be a fait accompli in December when the Ducks roared to a team record 27-4-6 start.

Instead, the Ducks' fate comes down to tonight's regular-season finale at Columbus after Friday's 2-1 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center kept them from clinching their first Pacific Division title.

"I guess we're going to have to do it the hard way," Ducks winger Teemu Selanne said. "As long as we can do it, that's all that matters. It was a pretty tough break with seconds to go to give up the tying goal."

The season series is 2-1-1 in favor of the Blue Jackets.

Um, this is the fourth game, so I'll venture to say that the season series is 2-1-0 in favor of the Blue Jackets.

Did some scenario-playing, and now there are only three possible first-round opponents for the Ducks.

-Should the Ducks take the Pacific, then the Ducks are almost certainly playing the Wild (though the Canucks are a possibility).

-Should the Sharks take the Pacific, then the Ducks will be the 5th seed and will play the Predators.

It might not even matter what happens in our game--should the Sharks lose to Vancouver (even in OT), then the CBJ game tonight becomes irrelevant.

May and Thornton are usless. Marchant is gone for a month. Its a late attempt to find some skill to make the 4th line semi useful.

Shannon can disrupt Minnesota D more than Thornton ever could, his speed will at keep them on their toes. Thornton would have trouble catching any Minnesota player besides Carney and I doubt if reliable ol Keith is worried about Thornton.

I see it less as an attempt to make the 4th line score more and more as a motivate Penner so he'll be better on the 2nd come playoffs.

You're right that Shannon or Hartigan would be better on the 4th if the coaches wanted the 4th to score. But Thornton and May would do a better job of hitting the defensemen and tiring them out so our 2 scoring lines have an easier job. Depends on what the coaches feel helps us more.

How many times can you recall Thornton or May laying out anyone? I bet not often.

The physical play of these 2 duds is very overrated and if we dress them both in the playoffs and any of our top 6 forwards get injured we are in big trouble.

We need secondary scoring since the oppsing coach will focus on stopping Teemu and Mac.

They throw hits all the time. Just wait until the playoffs start and we need to match the Wilds hitting, who have already said they will dress Boogaard for the playoffs.

Hartigan and Shannon are AHL talents they are not ready to step up and help offensively.

Your right, we should have aquired a forward at the deadline. But sorry May, Parros and Thornton are useless and at least Shannon can keep the opposing d on their heels.

If I'm a NHL d-man I'd much rather the opposing team throw out a fourth line 5'5 AHLer for 5 minutes who has no chance of scoring than have to worry about a 6'5 checker running me into the boards 3 or 4 times during his 5 minutes of play.

Carlyle is an old school coach. He knows the 4th line is going to get limited minutes and he is smart enough to know that a big hit on the other teams d is more important that Shannon dancing around pretending like he can create offense.

Well I think Thornton is faster than you give him credit for. He has decent speed. Not like Shannon, but he's not slow. And as a defenseman, it might not be so bad if you're defending against a speedster who stays outside and never goes to the net. Let him tire himself out, just stay inside positionally and he won't score. While the no talent duds will hit you and make you look over your shoulder, possibly leading to turnovers later in the game that Selanne could capitalize on.

Maybe a mixed line might be better. Shannon as a center for the speed. Parros as the enforcer as needed. Thornton/May for hitting. That way the defensemen are tired out by both chasing fast players and being hit and cycled.

Parros isnt a hockey player. I could see Thornton, Shannon and a decent trade deadline forward as a good combo, but since that didnt happen our fourth line is pathetic compared to the one we iced during last years playoff run.

A lot of pressure this year will be on Getz and Perry. Perry will need to produce a lot more than he did last season in the playoffs. I hope he is ready for it. We know he has the skill.

Actually the smart move would be to rest Selanne and Nieds today.

But then I guess we could dress a useless 4th line instead, win or lose a few fights then watch them spend the playoffs bolted to the bench since their skill? is not required come playoff time..

Exactly. Why the hell wouldn't we play Jackman after learning of the win? Also, unless Portland played today, I wouldn't mind it if they called up Ryan just in case Vancouver won, and then put him in once Vancouver did, just to give some other guys a rest and give him a look.

Wouldn't have been time for that. The team sheet would have needed to be handed in before the game was over I think.

******. Oh well, hopefully he'll be back come playoff time. I'd rather have him out there than Dippy.

And, that sucks that this game wasn't a bit later so such changes could've been made. But, I doubt I'd pull Bryz, as this could get his confidence up, and gets him more starts, which he deserves. Only if Giguere was questionable for the playoffs would I pull Bryz, but that isn't the case, so might as well keep 'ol Bryz in.

A couple of concerns..

First, why did Carlyle dress the sissiest lineup possible? After it was official we clinched, why do you not put the additional beef in the lineup and protect your stars?

We are having serious problems holding leads and having that killer instinct.

Looking ahead to the playoffs...we have to be good at even strength and get early leads, otherwise we will get trapped to death..but this is why we have Pronger and Niedermayer, Minnesota can roll two lines with all star caliber players on them. We need to be physical with Demitra and Gaborik...seems like Rolston always kills us too.
