Good for Hebert. I figure Paulie and Salami will be on the wall as well.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I think the Ducks should retire Hebert's number 31. He's been their best goaltender of the franchise, and deserves it. It would be fitting, maybe as soon as next year's opener.

You're the only one. Well, maybe not, but I sure as heck hope our standards wind up being higher than Guy. Hell, I don't want Paul or Teemu up there either.

I don't think i would retire a number of a player that only had 2 good years. Hebert was average.

he had his nights but he was an on and off goaltender at times...he only had what,4 playoff wins with anaheim in 3 appearances and he did ok during the season

He's been the best goalie of the Ducks' franchise. No one else is wearing his number, so it wouldn't be the worst of things.

He represented the Ducks for 7 or so years, and even with the terrible team we had, he actually won some games.

Hebert was much better than people give him credit for. He faced more shots than most goalies in the league and always finished top ten in most categories. Our one playoff series win before last year was all him. He carried the team for long stretches. As I've argued elsewhere he was IMO the most important and impactful player of the first decade.

Ducksfan2035

he was the best goaltender in the franchise but wasnt the best goaltender in the league IMO but we gave him the oppertunity to be #1 and i think he did his best

Spankatola Jamnuts

He doesn't have to be the best anything in the league. Dave Taylor was never even the best player on his team and yet his jersey hangs from the rafters, and rightly so. There are dozens of other obvious examples. Performance is a big factor, but performance (and thus league "ranking") is really tied to the larger notion of value to the team, and that IMO is what should be considered when deciding whether or not to retire someone's number.

Put it this way, if you don't retire Hebert's number, then you don't retire anyone's who's played for the franchise up to this point. And I would be okay with that, too.

hey i wouldnt have a problem wit putting heberts number up in the rafters but if they didnt,i wouldnt make such a big deal about it either...hebert played his best hockey in anaheim and gave it his all and having his number retired would be kinda of like a thank you hebert

Exactly, and it wouldn't be illegitimate at all.

nope, not at all....i think if heberts number doesnt get retired,i can see kariya and selanne's number being raised tho fans may have other opinions about that..

There's no reason for their numbers to be retired, assuming they don't return.

I think the honor accorded is just fine, and I don't mind it for Paul or Teemu, either.

I hope, eventually, that hanging numbers from the rafters would be reserved for players that mean even more to the franchise than any of them.

Spankatola Jamnuts

There's validity to that. I just don't agree with the folks who think that the retiring of his number would be a joke.

I wouldnt mind seeing Heberts number up there...would look a lot better than that stupid 10 year anniversary banner.

I think you can honor a player's number without retiring it. There is no reason for a young franchise like Anaheim to start retiring player's numbers when we have such a small history and tradition here.

Spankatola Jamnuts
12-16-2003, 11:35 PM
Your franchise envy is showing.

History and tradition starts somewhere. Don't be embarrassed about it. We have these sweaters that everyone hates, guys that played for us in the past that in the aggregate are below average, big games that would be meaningless to older franchises, memories that would be forgettable to fans of old teams. It's what we have. We're never going to have what they have. We have our own identity and our own players and our own history, and that's what defines a player's intrinsic value: not in comparison to other teams' histories but rather in the framework of the context our franchise has created in microcosm.

Call me old school but I think the Anaheim franchise need to accomplish more than one trip to the Stanley Cup to consider itself "arrived." The last thing this team need is to be the butt of people's joke and IMO, that will happen if we start retiring numbers right now. Wait another 10-15 years and we'll see.

Spankatola Jamnuts

Um...

do you mean to say that we're not already the butt of many jokes? Honestly, Jerky, I think you're putting way too much importance on what fans of other teams think.

We could have just as easly traded Hebert when we traded Tugnutt, and actually would have been better off. I will stick to saying that in my mind Hebert was nothing special, he was just lucky to end up on our team or else he would have been a backup for his entire career.

Spankatola Jamnuts

You may be right, but I don't see how that invalidates his importance, or his occasional brilliance. Expansion gives a lot of guys opportunities that they mightn't have otherwise had. I'm not sure why that means they're all automatically average or garbage.

What exactly does it mean that Hebert will be on the "Wall of Fame."
I'm not really clear on that.

I'm okay with Hebert's number being retired. I'm okay with it not being retired.

I do think Hebert was under-rated as a goalie. He's a lot better than average. Of course it was a relatively short time span that he was good. Say from 95 through 99. But he was in the top 10 goalies in the league during that time span. Plus he has meant a lot to this organization's early years. He still lives in the community, works in the Ducks front office as director of alumni operations. Good thing to do for a good guy, and a good goalie.

Hebert was the best goalie the ducks had during that time he was there... The sad thing is that Hebert was the Oilers 3rd stringer...
as for what ducksfan said... i agree with Selanne, but if it came down to it, Kariya should be placed there as well when that time comes...

Hebert was a good goalie...a GOOD goalie...not worthy of a number retiring ceremony in my opinion. No Selanne ceremony ever....and I would have said Kariya would have been on track for one eventually if for nothing else but sheer career numbers but after the way things ended up I wouldn't be surprised if neither he nor the team ever wanted to get together for something of this nature.

i am more than 99.99% that they would for Kariya. he basucaly started with the franchise.. he was their first draft pick.. Holds almost all the records.. he did a lot for the team... granted he screwed us at the end, but he will and always be my favorite player.. heck during the game this friday i'll be sporting his jersey.. :D

One of those he was hurt,he stole the series vs PHX and played behind one of the worst defenses in NHL history.

he's not getting the credit he deserves.

I dont know how they do the whole ceremony thing, like what comes into selecting players but I definitely agree with what you wrote above, except maybe wearing his jersey on Friday ;)
