Fan.At 12-15-2003, 07:47 AM POPOVIC RECALLED
With Kurt Sauer having banged up his right arm and missing the final six minutes of the first period in Saturday's 2-0 loss at San Jose, the Ducks recalled defenseman Mark Popovic from American League affiliate Cincinnati as insurance.
The Ducks plan to loan Popovic to Team Canada for the Dec. 26-31 Spengler Cup tournament in Davos, Switzerland, though injuries could alter that strategy.
A second-round selection in the 2001 entry draft, Popovic participated in the pregame skate, but his NHL debut will have to wait. He has a goal and an assist in 26 games for Cincinnati this season.
He should get some NHL games - let's see what he can do. Should also give his confidence a boost, I think the demotion after training camp did hurt him...
Spankatola Jamnuts 12-15-2003, 08:20 AM If he's a turnover machine like 7 of our 8 other defensemen I'm going to shoot myself.
Kevin Forbes 12-15-2003, 09:10 AM That Spengler Cup news is interesting as well....
It will be interesting to see how he performs
Chistov23 12-15-2003, 12:02 PM I would like to see Popovic get the nod over havelid as he was on for all 3 goals yesterday. Havelid just isn't moving the puck up the ice like he did so well last year.
Jerky Leclerc 12-15-2003, 02:41 PM Let the kid play. We need to change our luck.
cheesymc 12-15-2003, 04:34 PM The problem is that all 7 current Dmen fill some kind of role, and with Havelid we need his speed, puckhandling, and shoting abilities as hes the best in those 3 categories. I dont think Popo has Nick's shot or puckhandling, but he seems bigger, but i doubt any more physical (nicks been picking up on that since hes struggling).
Hey, as for the Comrie deal, would it be fair to trade Chistov instead, im just scared of prospects like Perry could bite us in the ass later on.
Chitov, Simpson, 2nd rounder for Georges, Comrie
Prospal, Havelid for Hamrlik
McDonald19 12-15-2003, 05:17 PM Mottau deserved the call up more than Popovic.

1) no I don't think Chistov was ever a candidate for a Comrie trade.
2) If NY ISLES are trying to cut salary why would they want Prospal's contract???

1.Take Cheesy out. Switch 2nd with 1st. Maybe put in Smirnov or some other Cincy player.
2.Take Prospal out. Put someone else in(i.e. Chistov), and then maybe, it's decent. Isles would pay a bit of salary though.
I'd actually like our lines after that:
McDonald-Fedorov-Lupul
Prospal-Comrie-Sykora
Leclerc-Rucchin-Niedermayer
Pahlsson-Krog-Laraques
Hamrlik-Carney
Ozolinsh-Sauer
Salei-Vishnevski
If Sauer developed his defensive game alot better, I'd like the D core and the forwards would be great as well.
One d-man I'd like to add would be Nieds' bro, Scott. Too bad it'd take quite a bit to get him. Man, I wish Lou would hand us him for something like Havelid and a pick.
Maybe it'd be an early Christmas gift to BM. And maybe and Elias-Prospal switch wouldn't be too bad either. Sykora really clicked with Elias.
Snap Wilson 12-15-2003, 08:56 PM Write the names of the organisation's top fifteen forwards and top eight d-men on some tiles, toss them in a couple of bags, shake them up and throw them on the ground and determine the next line combos and pairings that way, and it will probably make as much of a difference as anything.
That's actually how my high school baseball coach used to determine the lineup order for each game. Drew it randomly out of a cap. No, really.

You're scared of trading players like Perry because they could develop into something good, but you're willing to just trade players like Chistov and Smirnov without a second thought? :dunno:
Mottau deserved the call up more than Popovic.
I figure the callup is as much to help the team as it is to give Popovic a bit of kick in his step.
